The sad truth is that there simply isnt the viability for anything non-standard in the AAA market anymore. Some of the lesser "A" titles can get away with it but then they very rarely have the budget they need to pull it off, and so usually flop, which isn't helping the situation.
Minecraft, Witcher 2, Super Meat Boy, Little Big Planet, Eve Online, World of Warcraft...

You can't change something if you never try.

Because soon the FPS market will saturate as well, and then all the Triple A's die.

I don't mind "re-imagining" old, popular games for the new era, bringing them up to speed with the current levels of graphics power and considering what can be done with extra processing power by way of deeper levels of complexity and sophistication, real-world physics, dynamic story-telling, and so on.

But "we're going to make it a shooter" is getting old. There are other genres. Failing to even contemplate the possibility of putting something novel on the market may seem like a "safe bet" in the short run, but it's working on turning that market into a quagmire of mediocre brown shooters.

Games like "Syndicate" were renowned for their novelty and innovation, how they expanded the field and suggested that more was possible with the medium. Despite the designers claims to the contrary, it rather sounds like this is exploiting brand recognition without providing anything close to the same sort of contribution to the medium. I find that sad, and frankly, life's too short to put up with this kind of half-hearted nostalgia-milking. It's not like there aren't plenty of other options out there.

(glances over) Oh, hi, Bioshock Infinite. No, he's not with me, I was just being polite...

AGAIN with this bullshit "it's not a strategy game because those aren't current" excuse. That doesn't explain why you used an old IP instead of just creating a new one. Like with the new XCOM game, this would look REALLY cool and interesting, but I don't see the need to forcibly attach the name of an old series onto it. At least this team seems to actually be trying to make their game at least be similar to the original games, if in a pointless changed genre. Better than what 2K can say about XCOM, which they've admitted wasn't even supposed to be an X-Com game when they started to work on it.

I would rather the title die and be remembered fondly than be turned into yet another cash grab generic FPS. The fools even claim:

"We're big fans of the original Syndicate, and we're definitely paying as much homage to it as we can - bringing across the essence of the world, the core essence of what it is to be an Agent," he continued. "That sounds wanky but it's true - we're taking the Persuadatron and evolving it in different ways, the weapons and brutality. On both facets of the game, the co-op and the single player, it's very key to stay true to it."

A true fan wouldnt even dream of making it a FPS, especially taking for its time a innovated title and turning into a genre that has soooo man titles already.

Make your generic FPS titles if you must but stop trampling on fond childhood memories for no other reason than the bloody name.
I say to those who remember Syndicate, dont buy this and encourage further exploitation... or we shall have Dungeon Keeper 3, the FPS...Magic Carpet, the FPS... Populous ...the FPS.

Is this a trend now? What other series are we going to see needlessly turned into FPS by people who clearly don't have much love for the series they are supposed to be breathing fresh life into?

Yeah, times have moved on, that's why the DS version of ghost recon and the Final Fantasy Tactics games sell so well.

Those games you listed are either not AAA or are considered standard genre.

I agree the current situation is not desireable or sustainable, I was just pointing out that it exists. The advent of indie developers into the mainstream and some of the mid size publishers taking on smaller projects gives me some hope for the future. Things are changing, largly thanks to digital distribution.

Next up: Command & Conquer re-imagined as a gritty, realistic modern day military shooter. It's sure to be a hit!!

What the hell? Let's go all out! Streets of Rage as a gritty, first person shooter! Adventure Island as a gritty first person shooter! No IP is immune! Nolan North will voice all the characters! And do all the sound effects!!

Not even that, by the looks of it. Going by the screenshots for this remake, DEHR looks infinitely more gritty and it least has the colour palette to be a syndicate game. This one looks more like Mass Effect or Half Life.

They tried it last generation, with Command and Conquer Renegade. Which actually wasn't that bad. Not that good either, but pretty fun.

I never really worked out what stands for AAA these days. Seems to be just whatever franchise they're milking to death; that's being sold at midnight.

Basically, top down games were just there to appease gamers until real games, like FPS's, came along. Anyone who still enjoys playing those over FPS's are quite obviously simply braindead.
Not to mention they lack any real ability because if you pick anything over FPS you are a fool who truly has no idea how gaming is ment to be its just like multiplayer it must be in all games or else the game sucks. [Sarcasem off]

OT: This pisses me off so much 1st X-Com and now this :/

Time has moved on? That's their rationale? Well if time has moved on from the age of DOOM why do we still have FPS games? Why do we still have other RTS games like Starcraft 2, Total War, Company of Heroes, Warcraft etc. We all know the answer to that question. Oh boy, I'm definitely not buying a game from a bunch of people who just insulted my intelligence.

Now you guys have got me interested in the old Syndicate game. Did somebody mention chest nukes and corporate subterfuge? Sounds like fun!

As for this game they seem to want to make, yeah not interested.

It could have worked as a FPS, if they made with the same mechanics as the original Ghost Recon. You have your disposable soldiers and you equip them just like the original for the mission you have a few simple rules of engagement and a simple waypoint system on a top down map, and you can switch between the soldiers. How hard is that to do when Ghost Recon did it in 2001? On Xbox too so the controls work for consoles.

You can't have a protagonist in Syndicate or indeed X-Com, you need to have disposable soldiers, you need to be able to completely flub a mission and get wiped out, only to pick up the pieces and continue on.
