A stereotype is a human created assumption based on previously given information.
If I asked you what you expect to find in a restaurant you would most likely say: Tables, chairs, food, waiters and waitresses.
That is a stereotype, it is the human way of grouping things together based upon previous experiences.
If you walked into a restaurant and everyone was on the floor helping themselves to food that's just lying all over the place you would be surprised because it doesn't fit your stereotype of what a restaurant should be like.
People just completely misuse them to generalise things that really should not be, these are the ones most people think of, but stereotypes are the human way of separating things and putting things into group; it's also a defence mechanism as humans saw their ancestors get attacked by creatures with large teeth and assumed from then on that animals with large teeth = danger.
