I'm Cuban myself and except for the expectation to speak Spanish, I wasn't aware of the stereotype that we all rolled Cigars, and were great swimmers. The only ones I've encountered previously all revolved some weird static about Cuban Mechanics. Apparently, it's supposed to be a racial trait (like Dwarves and mining, Elves and song, Halflings and...having furry feet?) Some people in Miami still look at me funny when I tell them that I don't know how to fix cars.

Aren't all stereotypes wrong? I thought that's why they were stereotypes.
Actually, stereotypes are prejudiced thoughts based on the majority of publicity. For instance, since gamers have only ever been on the news when there's a murder or an addiction, people think gamers are violent, anti-social psychos who can't look away from their television sets. Stereotypes aren't necessarily wrong, simply misjudged: often they do describe the majority of their target group.

I'd have to say one very wrong stereotype is Christians. It seems that people think they're intolerant, ignorant idiots who simply believe what they are told, never question it, and try to "recruit" people into their group. But I've seen very, very different from Christians: if they truly follow the Bible, they are kind and loving, and regardless of their opinion of certain issues, they don't hate anyone. They live in a society that is completely set against them, which means they have to go through a lot to keep their faith: their beliefs are more tested than anyone else in our society, yet they still keep it. And they tell others because they care, not because they are trying to reach a certain number of "recruits." I personally find it sickening that people preach about tolerance while looking down at Christians so much.

To start off: That the Irish are big drinkers. Trust me we're not.
Now I'm sure you're not, but I was recently in Ireland (June 9th to July 6th) and man, you guys have a shit ton of pubs, they're EVERYWHERE ... I loved it =D

It made it difficult to drive cross-country in Ireland when we would pass a pub and all my friends would say "omg we need to stop for a whiskey/beer!". I miss Ireland ...

Everybody thinks that I'm a rodeoing, tobacco chewing, beer drinking, redneck just because I grew up on a cattle ranch in Western Nebraska. The truth is that I never have enjoyed going to rodeos and have never participated in one as a contestant. I'd rather play video games. I can't throw a lasso to save my life. I can ride a horse okay but not nearly as well as most people think I 'should' be able to. I never chew tobacco nor smoke (can't even stand the smell of that stuff). I like the occasional beer but never drink to excess. I also hate American style beers like Coors and Budweiser. Give me a really dark German or Irish style beer instead. I do sunburn easily so my neck will get red if I don't wear enough sunscreen but that's about as close to being a redneck as I get. I really didn't fit in very well in my home town.

O.K I'm differing fractions of English Welsh Scottish and Irish. In my opinion I have all the good parts I can hold my drink like the irish, I dont take shit from anybody and although not hugely powerful muscle wise (I don't lift weights or anything) I can kick the shit outta most people my age. I have a dignified way about me when it comes to adults and I am still playful with other people my age. Apparently I have an 'anger problem' I call it a magnet for total fuckers!

I'm australian and the stereotype that we all love a 'shrimp on the barbie' with a can of beer is utter crap.

All Germans wear Lederhosen, drink beer and eat bratwurst.

While we do drink beer a lot, the other 2 are only true for Bavaria.

....... I'm sorry, I can't say that with a straight face. It's true, we suck at dancing.
I don't.

The only reason white people suck at dancing it because disco is no longer in style.

That all southerners are stupid rednecks. I live in GA and I know some rednecks but most of the people down here aren't like that.

Hardcore gamers are not all obese, greasy, pale little cretins that some people may lead you to believe.

I'm 18, about 6 ft, and thin as a stick.
Yea... most of the gamers I know are skinny as hell.

JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T FIT INTO A STEREOTYPE, THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT ANY LESS TRUE.
Yes, yes it does. For each person that doesn't fit into a stereotype, the stereotype is that much less true.

Custard_Angel said:
Every single stereotype is a generalisation of real occurences. Some stereotypes are old, dated and need to die, but they were formed because they were (at least once) true.
They had to have been true about some members of the targeted group once, but they weren't necessarily ever true about the majority or even the plurality.

Wiggers need to retard themselves out of existence. Your basketball top doesn't make you hip or cool. Your rap music blaring out of the phone tucked into your baggy pants that unironically say "THUG" on them does not make you trendy. The fact that you have friends similar to you does not make you any less of a tool. It makes all your friends tools as well.
"Hip" and "cool" are relatively to the social circles one moves in. So yes, their basketball tops, baggy pants and rap music blaring do make them hip, cool, and trendy. Likewise, your unqualified condemnation of anyone who dresses a certain way or listens to certain music makes you a judgmental ass.

Custard_Angel said:
Dose that description remind you of someone you've seen? Someone you know maybe? Thats because its a generalisation of the real world. A stereotype.

Often the difference is in the fine print but all stereotypes have their basis somewhere. 1 person can spoil 10 peoples images. Stereotypes are real and have basis.
Nice circular logic there. "Stereotypes are true, because anyone who fits a stereotype fits a stereotype."

nah, but up here in Wisconsin I had my fair share of "hey Bob I need to show me how you roll those cubanos your famous for" If I had less moral fiber I'd slap him. And I didn't know I was supposed to be a mechanic. I mean I can fix basic stuff but I just go blank with cars.

I hate how people treat servers like we are all baby mammas on welfare without a education, which couldn't be further from the truth.

That every single gay guy in the world is either a fruity, lisping, fairy that dances around wearing skanky clothing or a big, bear of a man that wears lots of extremely tight leather. I am neither of those things. DX The only time I've ever had a lisp was after I had gotten a wisdom tooth removed. Local numbing agent, yaaay! But other than that the only thing "gay" about me is that I like men. Oh and I seem to have a knack for furniture arrangement.
Samez. Except for the fact that I'm bi rather than gay.
You'd never know if I didn't say, although I do have a bit of a penchant for pink, but my STRAIGHT friend always outdoes me at dressing stereotypically gay.
I don't have a lisp, I don't do that hand flop thing, I don't call people "darling" apart from the occaisional boyfriend or girlfriend who it feels right to say it to, I've never been to a gay bar. I used to be fairly promiscuous, but I once again have straight friends who are more into the whole casual sex thing than I was.

I spend most of my time just listening to music, no madonna lolz, a lot of jazz, avant-garde, metal, trip-hop, world music, ambient, drone, pop, blah blah. Literally anything and everything aside from country. That is the ONE genre I haven't found any redeeming qualities in yet. But I'm sure there's a country artist that could prove me wrong.

Only thing that makes me bi is the fact that I like guys too. I'm just your average guy aside from that.

I'm turning 21 in a few months, right?

Well, I have female friends as young as 13 or 14. Apparently, that makes me a full-fledged pedophile.

I'm also a virgin BY CHOICE, but people who don't know me all that well or even at all will insist that this is not the case.

These are the two stereotypes that apply to me the most, and they're both wrong. Just because you're almost 21 and have female friends as young as 14 (the 14 year old in question was 12 when we first met... actually, she might be 15 now, but my point still stands), doesn't mean I'm a bloody pedophile. Just because I'm still a virgin at my age doesn't mean I don't want to be.

Oh yes, here's another stereotype: that Christians don't listen to bands like Behemoth, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Empyrean, Souldrainer, Deathstars, Keep of Kalessin, Psyclon Nine, Arch Enemy, Devildriver, etc. I'm living proof that this is bullshit.

Another stereotype that doesn't necessarily affect me: that the Maoris and Islanders in this country don't listen to such bands either, because they're all 100% guaranteed to be listening to hip hop and rap and R&B and stuff like that. There are some who hate that music and prefer to listen to the music I listen to, among others. It's just that there's not that many of them that I know of. They're quite rare, to be honest, but it doesn't make the stereotype any less wrong.

Well i do know a lot of russians, and ocassionally travel to russia.

Russians are not angry drunks.
OK for that just for saying that you get a e-handshake and a HI5!
thank you my good sir.

Russians are not all drunks, there are drunks all over the world. Also according to the Russian news Ukraine drink more than Russian. And we do not all talk like this...
"Hwello comrade whehre kan I buy nuclear weasel?"
... no that's wrong! we do not sound like this, I blame American movies for spreading this stereotype (not dissing Americans here just the movies which involve previously stated)

and another thing we are not terrorists, every western movie we are in the Russians suddenly take over the plane with the American president, or the Russians kidnap the ministers daughter... urgh i really want to slap the guy who writes these scripts.
I can keep on ranting about this for ages
P.S HI5! to all the Russians out there :)
