So yesterday, I was at a friends, and he brought up E3.
Friend: So what was your favorite part of it?
Me: Seeing Goldeneye, I'll finally get to play it on the wii!
Friend: It's gonna suck.
Me: Why?
Friend: The graphics suck, and it's on the wii.
Me: So?
Friend: To me, graphics are the most important part of a game, and the Wii probably couldn't even run Halo 3!

Your stupid reasons?
Thats pretty much it, graphics are the worse excuse, esp now that graphics have basically gone as far as they can.

Graphics, the number one stupidest reason of all time would be graphics. Who honestly gives a shit. If the game is bad, then it is the story, or mechanics, or it isn't your genre, but it should never be graphics. They don't affect a game at all, not even a little bit. A game's story or mechanics won't be skewed just because the graphics are terrible or something.

.../rant
I love when people who don't know what "graphics" are complain about how graphics mean nothing.
let me try to explain something to you people, nes games had good graphics sometimes. Graphics are just images, a game with good graphics is a game with fun or entertaining images. Not "realistic" or "high tech" but just fun to look at. Do you think Super mario would be as famous as it is today if it wasn't for the way everything in the world seemed alive in it's own fantasy universe?
Seriously people like you are the ones blindly jumping on the bandwagon. Graphics are just as important, if not more important than story because a game with great graphics, ok game play but horrible story can be great while a game with great story but horrible graphics and ok game play will usually be forgotten.
Saints row had great graphics, the world came to live with vibrant colors and comicy setting.
Seriously, i get it. You think graphics are "how real it looks" but it's not, and if you think graphics don't matter at all, go play a text based game and tell me how you enjoyed it. Seriously, that is a game with no graphics, please go tell me how much fun you had with words.
Oh, I'm sorry, I should have gone with the version of the term that no one uses. That would have made my point absolutely clear. Thank you, sir.

Also, I like text based games. Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Final Fantasy I, and II for example.
And you still don't get it.
Those are not text based games, all of the games you listed have graphics and arguably good graphics.
Your preference just differs. You seem to think graphics means "high tech visuals" but it doesn't. I say again, would you enjoy a game with no graphics? If your idea of a "text based game" is a colorful creature filled game like pokemon, I doubt you would.

"There is a dragon in front of you. It is 12 feet high and staring down at you."
"Turn left"
"You turn left and the dragon is blinded by the mirror shield on your right shoulder."
"Hit dragon with axe"
"You hit the dragon with your axe and it screams in pain. It quickly decides to end it's life because of the crushing shame of defeat."
I can't continue this argument, you refuse to listen. Therefore, to end this pointless thing, you win sir, (insert derogatory comment).

Asked my friend why he doesn't like Halo, he replied cause its not real enough. This dude tried to tell me that Prototype was a good game.

This guy
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.228239-Diablo-III

is a pretty good example of knowing almost nothing of the storyline for a game that's not even close to release, yet he bashes it saying it's not dark and gritty.

After watching Yahtzee's review of Shadow of the Colossus, my friend stated that Starcraft was for cowards and proceeded to state that he would never play it.

I wouldn't mind if he would have stated some more valid reasons, but calling it a cowards game and then simply ignoring it seemed a little bit ridiculous.

First off, even the Wii's graphics are an upgrade from an N64 so the graphics are thus improved. Second, your friend need to slapped upside the head about a thousand times.
Third, people who don't even consider games on the Wii as maybe being good becuse there on the Wii. (Casual prejudiced is whack, yo).
I'd say I won't play a game on the wii. not because of the graphics or whatever, but, because I hate the motion controls. I dont like the nunchuck or the wiimote. I owned a wii and sold it about 3 months later because I just didn't like the control scheme.

Stupidest reason for shooting down a game?

Oh, how about this one:

"I don't like it, so it sucks."

Somebody literally said this to me when I said that I enjoyed Team Fortress 2.

That, and when I said I owned a wii, somebody came up behind me and coughed out a poorly-hidden "gayfaggot", thinking I wouldn't catch on.

A coward's game is when it's modded so that you can't possibly win.

Starcraft is just RTS.

I don't see how it could be a coward's game, unless by "coward" you mean "people who play non-competitively, or don't typically play first-person shooters as much as they do other game genres".

And even that's a bullshit claim.

"You can't relate to the characters" really? who really gives a fuck about that? There is no game where you can really relate to a character....unless it's the sims

No, if you watched Yahtzee's review, he called it a coward game because you simply looked down from above as you ordered thousands of units to their death without having to experience the battle firsthand. He basically implied that you would rather watch a fight and think you have some input than actually fight the fight and try to win.

I did see the review. Hell, I read the XP that came with it. And I guess that does kind of kill the experience if you're not one of those guys that plays RTS games and doesn't really want to, but for people like me - that is, people with no real preference - to call it a coward's game because you're not right in the action is a farce. Sometimes, I like being able to not die myself when playing a game, you know? After fifty billion melee hits and bullets to the head, I kind of want to stop being the main protagonist and play god for a bit, because, and I don't care what anybody says to the contrary, being up front all the time SUCKS. I like changes in my gaming, is that so wrong?

That's also something I hate about people not liking RTS games, people always claim it's just point, click and watch the soldiers do their work and that's about it. I can only name a few RTS games where that is actually the case, but even then, you will be outplayed if you just leave them there by themselves.

OT: Graphics is also a very common one, and it really pisses me off to see people mistake "art style" with "lower quality graphics" as a reason to hate games (such as TF2).

On a more obscured note in the mods for Half Life 2, it also annoys me that people walk into mods expecting a game with everything working and to be a high production game when the mod clearly says it's a beta version, or when they complain that the mod should have more of the features that a certain popular modern time shooter.

On Gears of War.

Friend: It's a bad game.
Me: WHAT?! Are you high? It's like the best multiplayer game availble on consoles (Even though I said this in 2007, I maintain this remains the same of the original today)
Friend: Nah it sucks, you move to slowly -
Me: - Hold A to run idiot.
Friend: It's third person and I have to get in cover -
Me: Yeah that's why it's good! Add's a dimension to the game.
Friend: It's not enough like Halo, aiming is too hard
Me: *facepalm* you don't deserve to own a video game console.
I think its a bad game and I will debate with you on our reasons.

I hate the control scheme. I have never understood why it is move like a tank, or run in only one direction. I had this problem with Resistance 2, it was walk slowly or sprint too fast, what ever happened to a good brisk walk and sprint option?

I can't believe you think multilayer was good. I admit the first one was ok, it held my attention for a month but it just got stupid. Every single round would end the same, people rolling around trying to shotgun each other. I can't speak for the second one because I couldn't even play it, it was broken for a very very long time and that is not negotiable.

The characters are more like robots trying to imitate human emotion. I would have felt bad for Dom if there was any character development, instead we get shoehorned this love story right from the start with no relations what so ever. It's a bad mid-day drama. If they just stuck with "Kill shit because we want to survive" and act all desperate than I would have bought it
and I would have no problem with them, but like I said it's adding simulated emotions to a tin can.

I am not shitting on you for liking the game, I am just stating my reasons for not liking it. Now swing away at me.

A buddy of mine insisted that every game using the Unreal Engine 3 was horrible and wouldn't play them. He loved Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Rainbow Six: Vegas, though. *shrug*

I think you are confusing being related (family) to relate (have empathy for, find common ground in a struggle)

There are plenty of games where you can relate to (empathize) with the characters.

Not many you can feel related to.

"It's unrealistic"

F--k off.

I play games to get away from reality.
This is really subjective. If a person wants a realistic game, obviously an unrealistic one is going to suck in their eyes.

I think the worst reason to hate a game I've come across (and this was one of my friends, not on the site, mind you) was "because Yahtzee tore it apart", my friend evidently not realising that's kind of his job on this site.

On the other end of the stupid reason spectrum, I think the worst reason to say one game is better then the other is because of the mods for it, something I've seen on many Morrowind vs Oblivion threads.
