yes, anyone who hates a boring on rails RPG must be another "hater" who is just hung up on the design.

I am just saying that to FF fans who say that and then say FF7 is better.I also play shooters like gears of war as well as bioshock and raceing games like burnout I'm not some rpg nut ok?

While I agree that WII sucks. Graphics are far from whats important to a game. Gameplay always come first. Graphics can only enhance the experience by so much. Games that use graphics as a selling point are usually shallow and lame games, like Oblivion or Crysis.

Oh, shall I clarify? I don't like the FPS genre, but I have no problem with it. I just get annoyed when that is the auto-response I get from a few peers of mine when I suggest a game. Don't go assuming things.

Thank you for classifying, i was scratching my head completely bewildered by your post. I was about to consult my old professor and everything until i read your post. So enlightening.

Where did I say I am better educated? I merely said I do not like the genre BUT I can put up with it, until that reason is brought out as the only reason to not play the game. I can see why people like the game, and I know not everyone in the whole gaming community play and praise it, but a few of the gamers I associate with in my personal life do love the game enough to shoot down everything that is not MW2, or a similar FPS.

Here's a nutsy thought, maybe they're into FPS games and they don't realize there is a word for games like that.
Maybe not everyone talks about games in these little subgenre terms like the rest of us do. Maybe to some group of people, games are just these silly little things they do when they're bored or lazy or something, and not something that's meant to be discussed like it's some world changing thing.
Or maybe we are really one entity experiencing life through separate sensory perceptions.

Did you not realize I said my friends are gamers, and that I'm fine with them liking FPS games? My point is, it's STUPID to shoot down a game because it is not MW2. It's like an avid RPG player shooting down Magical Starsign because "it has aliens using magic" or because "it's not like Oblivion/Morrowind." I repeat, I am fine with a few of my peers preferring the FPS genre, I just do not like them shooting down any non-FPS/MW2-esque game instantly.

and what if they only enjoy FPS games and after all of their years on planet earth they know that is the only type of game they enjoy?
Isn't that a logical reason to not like any non FPS game? Should they act like they enjoy a game even if they don't?

I get that they enjoy FPS games, but what I dislike is they would play any game I showed them until MW2 came along, and now it's all they care to play, unless I say there is a gun involved (Prime example: Assassin's Creed 2). Can't say iv'e ever talked to people who hated a game based on graphics. Whenever graphics are called into question, they are usually talking about a game that's horrible for several other reasons (like the last soldier of fortune game) but i think the debate is a little silly when so many people fail to realize that graphics are not so much about looking real but about visuals. Like i said before, mario is a game with great graphics IMO because they were creative and colorful yet they fit into the universe. I like a few games with "realistic" graphics like GTA 4 but i usually prefer something I can't see in the real world. A game that plays with light and shadows or colors (am I the only one who wants to see a game that plays with the concept of aura seeing?)

Honestly I think they are. At least they are now. Look at any game today, even the ones you enjoy, and imagine the images and sprites (or whatever they call the 3d version of sprites, models right?) were replaces by completely nonsensical things.
Even with older games, imagine if sonic was just a blurry red mouse and the world was filled with basic shapes and lines. No colors, no cartoon animals and robots. Suddenly the game play of any game seems simplistic and pointless. Graphics create the atmosphere, and game play without atmosphere is usually forgotten.

I still think they are a good thing but you have to keep in mind that you can't blow all the money on graphics and then skimp on the story and game play good case for this is FF13.

But you don't need to blow lots of money on graphics. A poor man can create beautiful works or art while a rich man may create nothing but crap. It's about finding talent or finding a good atmosphere, something too many game designers don't realize. I guess I agree then, you shouldn't blow all your money on graphics and then skimp on gameplay or story because none of those things need to cost lots of money.
We use to have great games that were made with very little time or money, now lack of either of these things is used as an excuse to release a mediocre game.

Indeed I tend to go for games that tend not to get much press.They look like ps1 games for the ps2 but the story and game play are good.As well as some cell-shaded game too.

I once had a friend say Gears of War was bad because he didn't like the multiplayer. Gears and Gears2 were both amazingly fun games at least in my opinion and had great campaign modes (although Gears1 was brutal even on Casual if you didn't play with a partner). This same person says they don't like Team Fortress 2 because it's a cartoony graphics style, and that Final Fantasy 7 was terrible when he didn't even get past the first boss. He also practically humps the legs of WoW and Modern Warfare 2. Although to his credit he likes StarCraft 1&2 although he's never so much as touched the campaign.

Oh right that's another thing he says that any game with no multiplayer isn't worth playing. Campaign modes are in my opinion the best part of the game. Although the multiplayer if there is any will keep you coming back longer because there's more gameplay hours' worth invested there, that just makes the campaign more special to me. Plus campaign modes don't have any jerks from around the internet interrupting your fun by competing to see who can play cheaply to ruin your day the worst.

Maybe your friends didn't like games like AC2 because they just didn't like it, but they couldn't articulate that in a way other than "i liked MW2 better" and you took that as a serious thing. Is that a possibility? That your friends are not the "hardcore gaming community members" that you are?

As an artist, yes, I do take things seriously. I would like for my friends to appreciate the art that other games can show, but I respect their choice of the FPS genre, but a lack of similarity to Modern Warfare 2 is ridiculous. Now, it is late, and I am under the influence of painkillers (not illegally taken), and I don't mean to come across as rude...but drugs fuck me up big time, so apologies if I came across as rude.

It's about finding talent or finding a good atmosphere, something too many game designers don't realize. I guess I agree then, you shouldn't blow all your money on graphics and then skimp on gameplay or story because none of those things need to cost lots of money.
We use to have great games that were made with very little time or money, now lack of either of these things is used as an excuse to release a mediocre game.

Indeed I tend to go for games that tend not to get much press.They look like ps1 games for the ps2 but the story and game play are good.As well as some cell-shaded game too.

I like some cel shaded games but its became so "hip" that terrible games (ahem, red steal 2) think it's now a trendy way to cover up a lack of creativity.
Loved Wind waker though.
Personally I can care less what console it looks like it was on, what i really want from game graphics is something that can't be quickly labeled as one art style or as one console style game. You know, something original.

Ya that makes me mad that some people think they can pull that.The Tales of and Star Ocean games do it nicely and try to inprove cel shading but games like Red Steel 2 use it for there lack of graphics and wanting to work too hard.There is something bugging me the more games come out the more original art styles will get labeled?

Friend: So what was your favorite part of it?
Me: Seeing Goldeneye, I'll finally get to play it on the wii!
Friend: It's gonna suck.
Me: Why?
Friend: The graphics suck, and it's on the wii.

Friend: To me, graphics are the most important part of a game, and the Wii probably couldn't even run Halo 3!

Anyone else think that Halo:Reach's graphics are TERRIBLE. Am I really that spoiled by PC and PS3? At least use Gears of War as an example. That has way better graphics than Halo...

I'm probably alone here but I liked the graphics of halo way more than the graphics of gears. Gears was just so...plain. I liked the run down look at first but it got stale quick. At least halo had that colorful yet otherworldly feel going for it.

I can see one having a preference of the different styles or colors used but I am referring to the technical side of graphics. Halo is very shiny looking and everything looks too clean for me. Limited bloom effects and with everything being so bright there were no details in anything. Gears had a film grain effect, motion blur, HDR lighting and very well modeled characters. Also I tend to prefer gritty over Saturday morning cartoon.

I have a "friend", who I have mentioned before on this thread and many times throughout this forum, that absolutely refuses to play cel-shaded or otherwise creatively-styled games, no matter the quality.

His excuse?

"It looks like a gay cartoon. It must be totally gaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. Anyway, wanna join my 10th Prestige lobby?"

yes, anyone who hates a boring on rails RPG must be another "hater" who is just hung up on the design.

I am just saying that to FF fans who say that and then say FF7 is better.I also play shooters like gears of war as well as bioshock and raceing games like burnout I'm not some rpg nut ok?

Sorry if I seem like an ass, but this whole thread seems like an excuse to blindly defend your favorite games. It's so passive aggressive that i thought i would join in.
Personally I despised FF7 because it simplified the entire idea of hating corporations yet it glorified it. It was like the gaming equivalent of an annoying liberal internet news show. Something that agreed with my view of the world yet dumbed it down for the idiotic mass audience. Never tried 9, I read in a review that the art design is very off putting.

Ya I'm one the same page with you about FF7.FF9 has a epic story but people just can't get over the art design and that is petty.The reason for this is the FF7 fans who would not know a good jrpg if it hit them in the face.

it's sad if you care what other people thing. Try to think of it this way, your one of the few people who enjoyed a paticular game because something scared the idiots away. When you find somebody to discus FF9 with, it will be a person who wasn't obsessed with flashy art style.

Can't say iv'e ever talked to people who hated a game based on graphics. Whenever graphics are called into question, they are usually talking about a game that's horrible for several other reasons (like the last soldier of fortune game) but i think the debate is a little silly when so many people fail to realize that graphics are not so much about looking real but about visuals. Like i said before, mario is a game with great graphics IMO because they were creative and colorful yet they fit into the universe. I like a few games with "realistic" graphics like GTA 4 but i usually prefer something I can't see in the real world. A game that plays with light and shadows or colors (am I the only one who wants to see a game that plays with the concept of aura seeing?)

Honestly I think they are. At least they are now. Look at any game today, even the ones you enjoy, and imagine the images and sprites (or whatever they call the 3d version of sprites, models right?) were replaces by completely nonsensical things.
Even with older games, imagine if sonic was just a blurry red mouse and the world was filled with basic shapes and lines. No colors, no cartoon animals and robots. Suddenly the game play of any game seems simplistic and pointless. Graphics create the atmosphere, and game play without atmosphere is usually forgotten.

I still think they are a good thing but you have to keep in mind that you can't blow all the money on graphics and then skimp on the story and game play good case for this is FF13.

I guess I'll worry about that when I start seeing original art styles...or when I start caring about video games. Right now I just kind of rent them, play them, and return them. I haven't discussed a game (excluding people online) since I got a job.
