Personally, I would be all for downgrading the "clones" to skins
This is what I was thinking. I think it be interesting if they used skins as a way to get in more characters without directly adding them. Maybe they could have it so that the skins slightly tweak the movements or have 1 different move. This way we get a ton more characters but still cap the character limit and make balancing easier.

Remove some clones and add back Mewtwo and I'll be happy.

I mean...Brawl was awesome and all, but THREE starfox characters? That all played VERY similar? This goes beyond luigification. I don't mind toon link, Luigi, Ganon, etc....But THREE starfox guys?! That was way too much...

Eh. I mean I know the series has its die hard tourney fans but I'm pretty sure the general populous doesn't associate Smash Bros with any kind of actual balance or serious competitive fighting game mechanics.
Like the article mentions, the game already has several characters that are essentially duplicates, in addition to other characters that simply break the game or are a complete waste in terms of competition.

Looking back I don't really know what my point is here but... I guess I see no harm in adding new characters. What's a Smash Bros game without all the new characters you've been waiting to see since the last one? IDK.

I never played Super Smash Brothers for a well balanced fighter. It was always a party game to me. I never played competitively and didn't care at all about balance as long as the characters were all fun. The idea of the clones being skins is actually really good though. They kind of did that with daisy/peach. Anyway its a horrible idea not to add new characters if they follow through. I just like having the option to play my favorite character even if he will always lose to something like Meta Knight. Although I do know some people who only care about winning and always play Meta Knight despite hating the character. Maybe its good for some, but I would rather have a huge roster of the characters I know and love than another competitive fighter.

Balance? But, but, I thought it you said it was a party game? Then I guess the title will be "Super Smash episode II:Attack of the Clones"?

SSB has never been designed with balance in mind, and that's part of the fun of it. I'm very disappointed by these news, and hope that they won't sacrifice the fun in favour of balance, cuz they're never gonna succeed anyway. Plus, with Namco on board you'd think they now have the experience and manpower to add more characters than ever. This sounds like DLC plans or laziness, or both.

Dammit. This is really disappointing. I never played Smash Bros. for balance. It was the game that I played when I wanted to have some fun with multiplayer. The thing that always excites me most about Smash Bros. is finding out which characters are going to join in on the fun!

Also, what's with the Toon Link hate? He's my favourite.

How about 35 characters total, and NONE OF THEM ARE CLONES. If we're going to keep Fox, Falco and Wolf, give them all extremely different movesets. Same with Ganondorf and Captain Falcon (which still doesn't make any sense), Link and Toon/Young Link, etc.

I'd be totally fine with that.

There is a huge roster of Nintendo characters ripe for Smash Bros. They could very easily get rid of several small-tier ones, or simply pull a Daisy/Peach and make them skins of other characters (Wolf/Fox would be so easy).

But off the top of my head, I'd very much like to see the following Nintendo characters in the next Smash Bros.:

Samurai Goro, Ridley, Birdo, King K. Rool, Dillon, Mallo from Pushmo, Isa or Saki from Sin & Punishment, Captain Rainbow, Hades/Medusa/Palutena/anyone from Kid Icarus: Uprising, Shulk from Xenoblade, Midna, and, of course, Nondescript Action Figure!

I'd be ok with them scaling back the amount of characters if that means they have a larger spread of characters, none of this "almost half of the characters are from the Mario universe" bullshit. Have 1-3 characters from each dominant universe, and keep it at that. Give Mario 4-6 just because Bowser, Weegee, Peach, and Mario, are kind of a must-have.

I see this as "we're sick of people complaining about balance in the SSB games, so we're giving you all less characters to play with, just because it will be easier to balance them against each other". Which is stupid. Anyone who plays SSB because it is a fair balanced fighter, is doing it wrong. You mind as well play Advanced Wars or Mario Kart for the balance.

This is really sad to hear especially since they pretty much shot themselves in the foot with all the characters they included. I mean, brawl had so many characters that were complete copies of other characters, that had no reason to be in there. Did Lucas really need to be there? No one in North America would have played Mother 3. Did Falco and Wolf need to be in there? They're complete fox clones. Ganondorf, just a Cpt.Falcon clone. Young/Toon Link? Was there really a point. Instead of filling character slots with clone characters for fan service. Why not include MegaMan, he started on Nintendo? Or how about Simon Belmont or someone from Castlevania, did Nintendo forget they started that series? I mean, include Snake but no Simon or Alucard? There's such an illustrious list of Nintendo characters that could have been utilized instead of just cloning existing characters.

I don't see a problem with scaling back the roster...the only thing I care about is getting rid of all the clone characters...

Did we really need 3 versions of Fox? I mean, I never used regular Fox, why would I want 2 more versions of a character I never used? I remember thinking it was cool that Falco was in Melee and that he was a better version of fox, but a 3rd character (Wolf) that is pretty much identical is going a little too far. Also, Zero Suit Samus needed her own char icon, she was different enough to warrant her own icon atleast...instead of having to hold R while selecting Samus (which took me a while to figure out since i'm a little slow).

In terms of someone like Ganondorf...they need to rethink his character and make him different from Cap'n Falcon. I can't imagine the roster without him now since we already have Link and Zelda. Or better yet, change him completely to Ganon. We got big beast like characters in the roster already...why not the original Ganon...

Now, i'm fine with all the Mario characters. Also, Lucas is fine too...because he is awesome. Those other clone character slots could be used for something better tho, like new characters...

Also....bring back Roy......

I'm okay with that, at least to an extent. It would be absurd if Nintendo didn't add new characters at all as that's a huge part of the hype for every Smash Bros. game since the first one. All that's needed is to cut down the amount of "cookie-cutter" characters and scrap the plain awful ones. Why would one play as the Ice Climbers when they can play as Fox, Link, or even Captain Falcon? Why even give Ganondorf a spot in the roster when he controls like Captain Falcon on molasses?

I'm not expecting them to add hundreds of characters from every game released on a Nintendo platform ever, but they should narrow down the roster by a bit, separate the wheat from the chaff (Less shit characters/blatant knock-offs), give us new characters from existing and new franchises (Travis Touchdown please and thank you), and voila: You worked your way around that problem! Anyone want to give any guesses on when we'll probably see the WiiU Smash Bros? I'm thinking TGS.

I would ask the same question, but that all comes down to what companies have an agreement with Nintendo to use their characters. That's why Sonic and Snake were in Brawl. I doubt Capcom would let Megaman be used at all, given that Capcom has pretty much wiped their collective balls all over that franchise in every direction and corner, and Konami really has no idea what they're doing with Castlevania or any of their stable franchises. (See also, Silent Hill.)

This is a REALLY misleading headline. Sakurai never said that there won't be any new characters, or that the character list will be the same as Brawl's. He just said that the NUMBER of characters will likely be similar to that of SSBB. That could imply anything between keeping exactly the same roster or replacing the entire roster with Travis and all the assassins from No More Heroes. Obviously, what SSB4 will actually do will fall in the middle, but saying that this statement implies that "there will be no new characters" is just silly.

I'm all for this move if this means that we're going to see a serious push towards getting rid of clones. Give Ganondorf his own moveset, remove all triple clones at least(Mario/Luigi/Dr. Mario and Fox/Falco/Wolf, I'm looking at you), and tweak some of the balancing issues, and you've really got a winner on your hands. I'm definitely optimistic here.

And for the love of God, at least CONSIDER Travis Touchdown, please? Even Suda51 wants you to!

Castlevania I can see as a possibility...but Silent Hill is pushing it...

Ya know, if they put more effort into it, this is a problem that could be solved. Sure Brawl wasn't very balanced (Snake was kind of crazy), but I could have forgiven that if the Smash Attacks had been a little more balanced, like how Donkey Kong's is pretty much useless.

When you make a new fighter, you add new characters. Period. If you don't, then take out old characters that no one likes and add new ones in. If you don't do that, people won't buy your game. I guarantee that if this new Smash Brothers comes out and has no new characters or expanded roster, no one will buy it. I mean, why bother? I'll just keep playing Brawl.

Give us a Castlevania or Mega Man character already. Sheesh.
