This seems like a solution someone would pull three or four years ago, and it was a bad idea back then too. Is anyone taking bets on how long it's gonna take for pirates to crack the DRM?
At most it will just take pirates a little longer to crack this, but you can believe that they'll find a way past it. All this is doing is punishing the people that purchased the game legitimately.
Strict DRM solutions hurt sales, but the blame will always be piracy, which prompts them to introduce even MORE strict DRM, perpetuating the cycle.
Funny how they attack PC gamers yet xbox/ps3 pirating is just as rampant and they do nothing to interfere with those gamers. So by their standards its ok to burn a copy of the 360 version and play it on a modded xbox but if you want to pay for it and play it on PC you better install Games for Windows and be online whenever you want to play it or you get screwed. Guess I know what game I wont be buying. Thanks for saving me the money Crapcom.
And the same day CDPRojekt releases 1.1 patch for Witcher 2 that removes DRM completely from the retail versions. Yeah.
Go figure Capcom, you just want the community to hate you for ideas based on false premise. Pirates will find workarounds around such DRM sooner or later, data mining, packet sniffing, some coding and a crack will be out.
The funny part? Some of people who bought your game legally will praise the hackers that did that because it will let them enjoy the game.

Why are they doing this? Simply put all the content will be locked and it will unclock once you are online, however the crack that will come with the pirated version will bypass the issue. Either by faking it so the program think the user is online or by removing the check completely. This won't punish the pirates, this won't even slow them down. The content is on the disk, not on GFWL servers, what's the point?
Punishing pirates? The sceners will crack it within a day or two of release and pirate copies will allow the use of all characters, features and unpaid-for DLCs while offline. The paying customers on the other hand will have to put up with a crippled game. Bravo Capcom, bravo.
(Not a Capcom hater, not after their announcement about looking to the PC as a serious development platform). A solution is to buy the game then use the crack (unless you're in the USA where the DMCA makes that illegal of course).
Remember those PSN games that don't work when not connected to the internet? Remember how your DRM fucked over paying costumers then? Why did you do that?

And now your saddling this DRM on the game, and pirates will hack around it and not have to deal with it. At all. So the only ones getting screwed are the paying customers, who are actually paying for an inferior product since it has this DRM.

DRM adds another layer of complication and potential problems. We saw this clearly in our game. We were unpleasantly surprised when some of our fans reported much larger differences, up to 30% lower framerates. This was another clear signal that we had to remove DRM as soon as possible ? the quality of our users? gameplay experience is absolutely our number one priority!"
I feel deeply for sf pc players (I'm playing on console). They got screwed on super and now are getting screwed on AE.
I've tried to stay quiet on the whole DRM things as I don't know if I have enough information to talk about it, but this is some BS on a level which is stupifying.
This kind of DRM only serves to give the hackers more challenge to laugh at while legit customer who don't want to use GFWL(as I stated, I play console and not well veresed in pc gaming tech, but from what my friends have told me GFWL is crap) are left out in the cold.
The locking of characters sounds to completly defeat the addition of adding characters, the saving of challenges shouldn't require an online connection.
*deep sigh* Can Capcom even go two weeks without doing something that makes them look like fools anymore? Though I never planned on buying Street Fighter IV in the first place, this is an atrocious idea to push on paying consumers.
Then again, since this is being done on GFWL, I wonder how long it'll take some folks to use this as ammo against the Windows Live service instead of Capcom.
Pirates will enjoy a hacked game with a full character roster while paying customers will get punished just because they don't feel like being online. I mean, we all know that GFWL is about the shittiest platform out there, anyway. I had considered getting this, but I have been cured of that. No matter how you spin it, it's not worth it. I'll just stick to my console I guess.

it doesn't punish the pirates, it kinda them gives them a point. This is like when a government reacts to protest against their cruelty by skinning and quartering all the protesters.
DRM will NEVER discourage hardcore pirates from pirating, every game across every platform will cracked and people will play it without paying. You can however reward loyal customers for buying your games. There are literally dozens of other games that basically do the exact same thing as yours and if i get something extra for buying your game that other games have not.
Yes the cattle will still buy the next madden/cod/star wars/whatever bioware does no matter how bad you treat them but at one point most gamers will we faced with the choice what to spend their 60$/40?/150$ aus on and if they stop to think before buying the one with the number at the end they WILL remember the guys who gave them free updates in addition to paid DLC, the guys who had great technical support and the guys who did not treat the hardware you just spend 600$ on like a rented car.
