I agree. Why is it never situationally dependent? I mean if you have all your homework in, are studying hard, and feel confident about your exams then why not have a day of celebration for something as cool, educational, and thought provoking as Portal?

Heck I took two days off for Red Alert 3 and my teachers knew it and didn't care. As long as I maintained my 3.85 or better they let me do pretty much whatever I wanted. God I love my teachers....
I'm not sure about the other "negative Nancys", but for me, it isn't about individuals skipping class or work for a game. Like I said, if you can handle missing the class, that's fine for you; you have makeup work or need to hunt down lecture notes, that's fine.

My point is that this teacher applied that to all of their students. What about the students who couldn't care less about Portal 2 who now have to rearrange their week to come to the makeup session?

Where are the consequences for the students who did take the day off? Not consequences like punishment, but the simple consequences; miss a day, makeup work, loss of participation points, missed lecture? Nowhere, they get their cake (lie or no), and eat it too.
Hey Nuke I didn't call anyone negative and I sure in shining heck didn't call them Nancy! Yeah I see your point though....

Yet how many times have you had to reschedule things due to a "big game" or a pep rally or some other nonsense that has nothing to with education whatever? For me, it's been lots. College football around here shuts down the town! I kid you not I couldn't even go to my credit union on one game day and on others it takes like fourty five minutes extra just to get home from work. So for once everybody has to once again adjust but this time it's in tribute to something that IS educational as well as fun. I just don't see that as a bad thing. Or maybe they could stop shutting down the town in celebration of 22 guys arguing over an oval and I'll go back to "Nope. Just school. No days off for anything." I just don't see that happening though.

Also I bet a lot more people didn't show up today for a different reason and that affected study groups and schedules too. I was just expressing that for ONCE I was kinda' happy to hear that it was "our" turn.

Now be honest. What will you be doing on June 16th?? ;0)
Forgive the generalization and putting words in people's mouths; I had to come up with a label for those of use who don't approve of this decision, and as the most prominent seems to be "those folks who need to lighten the f*** up", I went with "Negative Nancys".

I can understand that, I live two blocks North of Gonzaga University. While previously I didn't really care for Basketball one way or another, I've developed a certain... loathing for basketball games. Also I went to Whitworth so maybe that's why my classes were never cancelled for a Zags game...

To me, though, that just makes a double-standard: I don't like it if it isn't about me; but I'm fine if it is in my favor. "I either want less corruption or more opportunity to participate." It reminds me of a certain publisher and their opinion of metacritic.

I'd just rather the "official" days off be for pre-planned holidays; where you weren't planning to have work/class at the outset. The only exception maybe being 7 feet of snow overnight and no one is going anywhere anyway.

As for what I assume you meant as the 14th of June in regard to my namesake/avatar... I'll be hoping it wasn't all a dream, or postponed again. I'll schedule my vacation leave two weeks before, make sure all my purchase orders, payroll, and billing tasks are completed on Monday so no one will be waiting on me for anything on Tuesday. I won't be expecting my boss or the Mayor to shut down operations or the City for it.

No need to appologize Nuke Em' I was mostly just making a joke.

Gonzaga huh? Wow, you DO know my pain. *sigh* At least that makes it a LITTLE easier to admit that you're right of course especially when you sum up my attitude as "I either want less corruption or more opportunity to participate." Ouch. An' I don't even know what publisher that would be. I guess because this time it was something that I could relate to I supported it. 7ft. of snow is different, sure. Act of God = Fine. Act of GlaDOS = Not so much. If only it didn't affect other peoples schedules....

An yup I meant the 14th. It would seem that I know about as much about Duke Nuke Em' Forever as I know about metrics. The Irony here is that I'm being put in my place by a Duke Nuke Em' enthusiast who is taking a most "non Duke" approach to it's release which really should be commended.

No worries there, was really jesting back and making a point of where I was coming from considering my... opposition.

Sorry if the quote seemed personal, saw it on a poster before.

The publisher is THQ, they didn't like the metacritic score on Homefront, essentially saying "well it's a stupid system anyway", and then saying they wanted their next game to get a better score. "I hate the system if it gives me a bad score, but I like the system if it gives me a good score."

Like I said before, I don't care if these folks took a day off to play a game, so long as they accepted that there would be makeup work. What I disagree with is the teacher essentially giving them a "pass" for it.

Yeah, with as long of a development cycle as DNF had, the reckless teenage Duke fans of the 1990s had time to become boring productive members of the workforce with all sorts of lame responsibilities in the 2010s. Which is probably why we hold out so much hope for the escape DNF will provide.

I mean... "F that! I'm just not going to show up for work the whole week, and when my boss calls asking me where I am, I'll tell 'em to shove it! I'll hang out all Monday night at a strip club kickin' back Jack and smoking a Cuban cigar while I wait for the launch, throat-punching and curb-stomping anyone who gets between me and the counter when I go to pick it up!"

... or something like that...

I only call in sick when I'm actually sick, and I've never even taken vacation time to do anything other than, you know, take vacation. If you find yourself in a 'career' where you feel the need to dodge out of work for a hobby, it's probably time to reconsider what you're doing with your life.

The teacher should be sanctioned for canceling class based on what his students are doing. I certainly never had such a sorry sack for a teacher, ever.

You know, this really depresses me.

I get that you people are excited about Portal 2, but what ever happened to self-discipline? You can wait until you get home from school or work, no matter how awesome Portal 2 is.

Maybe I'm just on my soapbox because I'm a sad sack who wasn't excited enough about Portal 2 to buy it on launch day.

I have never once taken time off for a game. I also have to be incapacitated-level of sickness to not come into work or school. I once even went to work while I had an almost finished case of food poisoning....they sent me home early that day.

Aw c'mon, I played the first half of the game the night of release and even I went to class the next day. I don't think any game is worth skipping school or work.

I've never feigned illness.
I just skipped classes without excuses.
The reason I never feign illness is because I often have migraines and get thoroughly annoyed when people think I'm faking it.
Migraines are fucking terrible.
People think it's less 'serious' when it happens often.
It's like getting stabbed in your eye once a week.
People fuss when you get a gash or break a bone, but in reality, migraines can easily be far more painful.

I'm not fucking faking it!
I know I had migraine yesterday too!
I'M STILL HAVING IT GODDAMNIT!

I live in the UK, and am currently on my Easter holidays. I didn't have to feel guilty about missing college, but I could feel guilty about how much revision I should have been doing. Managed to get Portal 2 on Wednesday too (release date for UK was the 21st, got it a day early) and have now finished it twice.
