Tera has interesting combat. The game design though looks very Korean-MMO generic. Some races just don't wear clothes and it is irritating.

I know i will not pay any money to play Tera because i can play similar games for free (e.g. Atlantica Online has a more interesting combat for me). I will probably try GW2 at some point but i will wait until it gets cheap first, because i play SWTOR and i will def not stop playing anytime soon.

Last thing i would like to say, why all the conflict? Why do some people feel the need to attack games they do not play? They can both be good and succesfull you know.

I play Tera for the PvP..
GW2 for the storyline..

Since when did gaming have to be "YOU MUST ONLY LIKE ONE, AND ONLY ONE, YOU MUST BE A FANBOY!"

Oh, why would that be?

I have played neither.

Tera has too many scantily clad prepubescent girls.

GW 2, doesn't.

GW 2 wins.
I would be ashamed to be playing tera if my friends popped in for a mug of tea.

I would not be ashamed to be playing guild wars 2.

Guild wars 2 it is.

Side note: FUCKING BEARS WITH SWORDS. that is all.

It's just ignorance on your part. I'm trying to clear it up.

Oh heavens no, you're right. There's nothing remotely discomfiting about that. I'm well accustomed to seeing short shorts on 8 year olds.
The creepy part is when you think: "Right, I just know, that someone, somewhere, at some time is jerking it to this..."

welcome to the internet.

So I see a lot of people don't seem to actually have any gripes with Tera, EXCEPT for Elin. So you have to automatically hate the game because they used a design choice you don't like? I won't begin to comprehend that. I mean really. The one that someone linked in the thread (the Elin character page on the website) looks scary because someone dun goofed with the character generator or something (seen some scary people lol).

ANYWAY, if you were already steering clear of Tera, more power to you, but to steer clear SOLELY because of Elin is like me not playing LoL because of Annie. Or not playing Chantelise/Recettear. It's ridiculous.

Since we're apparently only asking questions and "someone" refuse to answer;

What, exactly, would you call a political system in Guild Wars 2?

Elin-folks: This game is unplayable without loli pantsu!
Anti-Elin-folks: This game is unplayable with loli pantsu! Or lolis at all!

And thus began the greatest war of our era.

Edit: Oh hey, and don't forget the...
Anti-Elin-folks: You wouldn't play the game if there weren't any lolis. You're all shallow... and paedophiles!
Elin-folks: You wouldn't play the game if there were loli pantsu. You're all shallow... and prudes!

lolololol, why does this whole thing seem so silly and amuse me so?

I dunno. I just heard that the political system in Guild Wars 2 was better.

I heard that they were going to make permanent in game changes based upon political decisions.

Now now. Tera has a lot of embarrassing crap in it besides just the lolis. The lolis just ratchet the squick level up to the point where you can barely see the game through all the grease on the screen.

There is no political system whatsoever in Guild Wars 2. I seem to recall hearing there was one in Tera.

Yeah, what you heard was probably about Tera. They have a political system where you vote for specific users to rule parts of the world. They can set taxes and a couple of other things which I can't remember.

Guild Wars 2, on the other hand, has no political system at all, which is why I thought you meant the combat was better in GW2 and the political system was better in Tera.

The combat is fairly similar in both games, although I prefer the combat from GW2 over Tera.

Alot of people won't touch JRPG's solely based on the fact they have an anime style, or realistic war games as they don't like the fact it looks the way it does.

If you don't like something be it the way something looks or even sounds you don't like it and you shouldn't have to feel guilty for not playing a game based on those choices :).

I'm sure i would like TERAs combat world etc, i just dislike the aesthetics and what is imho the hypersexualisation of pre-pubecant girls, i can't see a need for it to be there thats all.

I will never understand people letting go of a game because of one tiny thing, but I'll drop it.

Unfortuntley alot of people do :( trying to convince people to play awesome jrpgs when they love the mechanics of say heroes of might and magic, trying to convince them to play say disgaea or fftactics is a nightmare.

Whoa whoa. The topic isn't "Name one reason not to play AMAZING GAME TERA". It's "Which do you prefer between these two prominent new MMOs". As they by all accounts both have reasonable play mechanics, why is it a crime to discriminate between them based on the art style? One has a fairly staid if slightly anime influenced high fantasy flavor. The other features lolis and ambulatory tits and anthropomorphic raccoons and seems to be aimed at the crowd that goes to the drug store at 3AM to buy Penthouse Letters.

Besides which, since when did the art and marketing of a game combine to form "one tiny thing"? This isn't Bastion or To The Moon or some other odd looking but inexpensive and critically adored title we're talking about. There's no REASON to fight back distaste for the art assets. This is a fucking MMO, which shares 75% of its feature set with all the other fucking MMOs. A lot of the time it boils down to a "few tiny things" as to whether you're an Orc in Azeroth or a Super Hero in Liberty City or a Jedi Knight on Tatooine. That I'd want to put a copy of Tera into a paper bag so no one I knew would see me with it is reason enough to play one of its numerous competitors instead. No one is saying it's a terrible game. They're just saying "not for me".

Actually that's not entirely true, a friend of mine tried the beta and said it was a terrible game, but he's notoriously hard to please.

Overall I'd say Guild Wars 2 will be the better game. I am loving TERA but all it really as going for it is the great combat system and beautiful visuals, other than that it's like any other MMO with the grinding and the 'go here and collect 10 centaur testicles and bring them to me' type quests.

Also I have to post this.

Trying to stay on topic. I like Tera because I can dodge, and block with some classes, attacks and so can the enemy. I play a healer and it is very fun to be able to DPS and heal my party. Having to run around because the boss charges you suddenly is cool. I really enjoyed that.

I have not played GW2, didn't make the Beta, but from what I have seen I don't think I will like it. I am a bit shallow and like nice graphics in my video games. Tera seems to have the better of the two. I will however, give GW2 a go regardless. I am not going to pre-judge GW2 based on art style, characters selection, or w/e.

Guys I was hoping to get more out of this thread for reasons to play GW2 but all i got was Tera bashing for have a stupid race. Move on please interested to see what people choose and why you want to play not why NOT.

I prefer Guild Wars 2 they have set the bar higher for MMOs and something that all MMOs now have to meet or people might see them as lesser in quality. I was in the beta and I have to tell you, I don't think anything could come close to what it's offering lol

If Tera has pedophilia, then WoW has genocide and TOR has slavery.

What are you trying to say here? That this game will make people more liable to go and have sex with little children? Because I don't think any children were harmed during the making of this game. What exactly could your problem be? Oh no, someone is watching virtual, computer-generated child sexuality. Now they're probably going to jerk off! How dare someone masturbate to things I don't also like.

The only excuse I can find for not tolerating this is because it enables more child pornography, and that's just like saying videogames make people into killers.
Maybe it just makes us feel uncomfortable, in the sense that if I played it I would never want anybody I know to find out that I played it. Isn't that a pretty valid reason to not buy a game?

the character models in tera do bother me, but im not talking about the elin. they are cute little chibi girls. watch anime and aside from robots what you will probably see most is underage girls in scantily clad outfits, and often with a lot of panty shots. what bothers me are the other female models. im used to females in fantasy games looking very under dressed, but tera takes it to a new level that i dont like.

all that said, tera has amazingly fun combat and guild wars 2 doesnt excite me at all. nothing about the gamelay or questing seems that interesting to me and i dont really like pvp which, obviously, is a big part of guild wars 2. i probably wont buy either game but if i had to pick, id go with tera online

Ah well, in that case : The dodge / block is just as much a part of GW2's combat as Tera's. You definitely need to keep on the move from a lot of enemies, and even in the low-leveled areas, going toe-to-toe like you do in other MMOs won't work in GW2 either.
The DPS + Heal is an optional part of most classes, but most of the healing is done by each person; everyone gets a self-heal skill, but you can aid others. In general though, the focus is on damage mitigation instead of simply healing up afterwards.
From what I've seen, both games are extraordinarily pretty. I will agree that graphically Tera has the advantage here, but I prefer the GW2 design aesthetics - this is a personal preference though.

The reasons I'm interested in GW2 over Tera has nothing to do with any races.
The main reason is the world itself. You get a personal, branching storyline that depends on your race and starting choices (eg, for human, you can start as a Noble, a Commoner, or a Street Rat) that will roughly guide you through some parts of the game world, but most of the "quests" come in the form of dynamic events that crop up and make the world feel like a real entity in it's own right. These events are also co-operative; for what may be the first time in an MMO, I'm actually glad to see random people running around in the world, rather than actively avoiding them. On the other hand, Tera's quests keep the same "Kill X of monster Y" that I was sick of a long time ago, which does little to foster community.
There's a lot of other reasons, but this post is already dragging on way too much already, and I get the feeling I need to stop with the typing now :)
