Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
Too damned long, and bosses too tedious, taking hundreds of shots.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. I played it when Majora's Mask came out. Couldn't beat it because of the motherfucking Water Temple. Put it down for a few years, came back to it and realized that the floating platform in the middle tower held the key I needed all those years ago. I felt so stupid. ._.

The final boss of FFX is one of the things that makes me rage (I'm a youngin so I never really played any of the extreamly hard games of the past). He just has so many things that can screw you over in a short peroid of time....

I was never able to beat the first Snowboard Kids game. I could beat the second one, but not on hard mode.

Then, just a few months ago, I beat the second game on hard in only a few tries, but I still can't beat the last stage of the first game because the AI really cheats. Seriously, final opponent is programmed to only get the invisibility and hits-all-enemies-instantly weapon that brings you to an immediate halt for a few seconds. I hate that bastard.

Wonderboy I managed to beat, but with no savepoints it's a long haul.
Also, even if you do manage to get the superweapon at the end it's still an old Japanese game - which means that just like Rainbow Island etc you beat it and they tell you "Oh no, that boss was a robot, now play through it again on a harder difficulty and we might give you a real one".

Kudos for Altered Beast though. SERIOUS kudos. I played through it cracked and it was still hard as hell.

Monster Hunter, because I had no online on my PS2 I couldn't get any great gear. And it screwed me over and I couldn't fight and beat the Ralthos... I have come so close and even now, I still cant.

Any platformer. I sucked at them all, Mario, Donkey Kong, Mega Man...you name it. I'm still not super amazingly awesome but I am much better then I was.

The game I had the hardest time clearing as a kid (and I eventually went back and beat) was Shadowgate for the NES. That game will not only kick ur ass, it will feed it to a mutated dog, throw it down a well, let you wander through deathing darkness, strike you with lightening, and about a billion other random things that results in ur heroes death.
It's a point and click mystery game and you'll pick up about 100 items and use only 25 or so. With a walkthrough, the game is about 30 minutes long. Without one, you'll be using every item on everything you can "touch" or "open" or "take". Either ur right or your dead.
Some of the challenges are jsut ridcuolous. Like use vial 3 to float. well how was I suppose to knwo that til that one room I needed it? There's no label or anything like that! and you game me 8 vials with no indication what room or situation I'd need ANY of them in.
Fun but frustrating game. Way too scary for an 8 year old. The grimm reaper you see everytime you died use to scare the piss out of me.

Shadow Knights (Or, as I knew it, Budo: The Art of Ninja Combat) is still one of the most difficult games I have ever played. Sixteen years later and I still get stuck on the same goddamned level.

For all my sins it was Oddworld Abe's Oddysee. I could never beat the last level after the time limit started, after about 30 seconds I died every time until the last time I played it on PS1 and died literally like 2 steps from wining the entire F****** GAME!!!!!!

I haven't beaten it yet on PC either

Gah! I bought Altered Beast on the Wii to go back and try to beat it, and I still haven't managed to. It was the bane of my gaming life when I first got my Mega Drive and it's still laughing at me now =(.

Xena: Warrior Princess for PSOne. Actually, I still can't beat that stupid freakin' game.

And then there were various Sega GameGear games that I failed epically at. I could never get past this one stage in Sonic...

Empire Earth. It was an insanely hard game. I could only beat the tutorial.
