I really like the change of style. Though slight, its more aggressive. This is also a better rendering of the human face than usual for you. There's a lot of feeling to the expression and its accented by the jagged lines and flow of the piece. Keep it up.
I would really like to keep it up, but I'm not gonna lie, that was hard for me. The only reason that looks as good as it does is because I had a reference photo to go off of. I know that's nothing to be ashamed of, but I still wish I could ween myself off of them...

Don't worry for now. Photo's are helping you. But its when you work too closely off of photos that it becomes evident that you're using photos instead of experience. Just work off photos 'till you feel comfortable with the subject matter, like, you have the way it looks in any position down, and you should be able to stop using photos entirely. I need almost no reference to draw people now that I've worked enough with photos and with life drawing and you can do it too (I felt like some kind of infomercial there for some reason).

My main problems now are proportion, hands, and realistic head/face shapes. I've always had problems with those, and despite all the practice I've had over the past few months, I haven't really taught myself anything new. It's times like this that I actually kinda regret not taking art classes...

This [http://www.drawspace.com/] is a great online resource if you're just starting out. Unfortunately these never make up for the opportunity to get a nude model and someone who can guide you in proportion but we do what we can. Hell, I entirely re-learned how to draw when I spent a week doing life drawing at NAS in Sydney. Once you have the basics down the rest just comes with time and practice.

Thanks, I'll give the site a look. As for the whole nude drawing thing... I probably couldn't help but feel incredibly awkward trying that out. I know it's a totally mature thing to discuss and so at my age but... I'd just feel uncomfortable about it.

Haha, dont fret dude. I cant draw a girl in a bikini let alone nude, it just doesn't feel right. What I can suggest for proportions and such is doodleing while at school. Just scrawl a hand in the margin of your notebook. Thats how I got better at it anyway. Any little bit of practice you can get pays off.

You get over it within a few hours, believe me. There's only so much you can blush and hide behind your easel. Most models you get with Art schools are either ex-students themselves or used to having nervy people around anyway. We had a really great one the second day. Spent much of the time he wasn't posing chatting with us and offering commentary. We also had one who said maybe two words all day and was really stiff.

I would like to see some of your non-people stuff though, if you have it. I've seen what you can do with characters but I'd love to see some other subjects covered (environments or what-have-you).
You've really called me out on that one, I'm useless with environments and objects xD
Characters is my main and possibly only focus.
But I suppose I could use this as an excuse to get some much needed practise in.

Hey, it never hurts to at least try. I'm with 'Garr on this one. Your style with people is great and I'd love to see how that carries over to random "things".

Believe me when I say it stops being awkward immediately. After about 5 seconds it was for me. You just have to sort of zen out and see the body as an object you've never seen before. It sounds stupid, I know but it can help. As for proportions etc, take a look at the figure drawing tips I gave LaCoil a while back (I think 5 pages ago or something). If you don't feel like looking for it, PM me. I have plenty of figure drawing advice and experience to give if you want it.

Alright. These are better than the ones you had before. I can tell that there's been a loosening of the lines with these. You still have some trouble with proportions and thickness. Its really minor at this point, just things like the width of the ankles and upper calf looks a bit awkward. Hey, maybe that's just how the person was formed, so call me on that if that's the case. Some things, like the hands, need some work. They still feel very stiff. Hand are hard, so when it comes to short sketched, or full body sketches, its best to leave them in "sock mode" which is where you don't define them as having fingers, but rather imagine them as if they were in a large sock.

Hey, you don't have to. I just wondered if you had any of that. Hell, I'm pretty awful at environments, I was just, like Vanguard said, interested to see how your style transfers. And if you're looking to really challenge yourself to something, then hey, you've got an assignment for yourself.

Sorry I haven't posted work in a while, guys. I had something to post, but some-the-times photoshop decides to have a brain fart and close for no reason deleting the speed paints I was doing at the time. I probably won't have new stuff up for a while, since I'm moving into my new place very soon. In fact, I likely won't have internet for a while, so I won't be around for a while, come Friday. But I'll hopefully have something shortly after.

You and me both, brother. I'm pretty boor when it comes to backgrounds and scenery. That's why it always looks so... plain.

Is this the longest thread on this site OP 30 Sep 2008 5:15 am. I know i posted something in here somewhere.
It's the longest surviving one in Off Topic. Chances are there's a roleplay thread or three lurking which are older.
Edit: My bad, Xhumed' The Customer Is Always Wrong [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.70218] is a month older.

Your avatar is really creeping me out. It is changing right? or am I just sleep deprived?
