TimeSplitters 3

Fantastic humor, game play, and even a rather robust level editor.

Half-Life 2 is probably the best. Bioshock 1/2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC/CS are close by and I also find myself playing over and over again such misunderstood gems like Doom 3, Metro 2033, Condemned: Criminal Origins and Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason.

I'd have to say Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I don't like what its become, but CoD4 was breathtaking.

In terms of pure shooty fun, I'm going with Painkiller, though I might change my mind about that when I finally play Doom. Overall it'll always be Half-Life 2, a game that has completely mastered linear gameplay and storytelling.

Deus Ex: The story is smart, the gameplay is almost as smart
Half Life 2: Episode 2: It evolves in a smart way
Stalker: You need to be smart to survive

I'd say Alpha Protocol (after patches), but it's a TPS :(

Metro 2033 but Killzone 1&3 and Halo Reach come pretty close though.

Why?
Metro 2033 has a great atmosphere, and playing it on the Ranger difficulties makes you think twice before taking action.
Killzone (ps2) multiple characters to chose from (each with their own style of gameplay).
Killzone 3: Varied enviroments (which btw also counts for Killzone 1).
Reach: Unlike other Halo's it had a darker tone, neat visuals (not that Halo 3 bloom rape) and even without multiplayer there where alot of stuff to do outside the campaign.

Why not Killzone 2? I never liked it that you can't swap out you're sidearm for a second assault riffle or so (or having a third slot atleast). Also, the first half could've used more variation in enviroments.

Serious Sam SE HD is the best.
The essence of Doom, but with a better challenge, more variety, better controls, a Y-axis and humour.

I've been judging every single player campaign I've played since on Goldeneye so I guess that. I am not too into multiplayer but I had the most fun playing it in Halo 3 so I guess that. Co-op, hmm, probably Borderlands for the four player goodness, although I think Halo 3 was a blast co-op as well.

It has already been mentioned a couple of times: TimeSplitters Future Perfect.

Why?

- Enjoyable single player experience that has both humor AND a decent story.
- Single player has co-op mode.
- 4-player split-screen offline multiplayer mode.
- Enjoyable online mode.
- Lots of customization options for a match.
- A huge amount of characters, multiplayer modes and exotic weapons.
- An awesome map maker with tons of options, including the ability to create your own missions.
- Fast-paced shooter fun that can come in many flavors thanks to the combination of the three reasons mentioned above.
- Funky music.
- Monkeys!

There's not an FPS out there I've spent more time on.

I always loved Return to Castle Wolfenstein, although it took me ages to get used to the shooting mechanics. I also liked to sneak about and backstab the nazis so they dropped free stuff like armour, ammo and medkits.

Black was quite fun to play as well, I know fps have lots of explosions, but Black had a LOT of explosions.

I just finished Half-Life the other day. Definitely, a favorite. On the other end of the FPS concept, Serious Sam is something I desperately want to try, despite the fact that I haven't really been into fast-paced shooters all that much. Halo: Combat Evolved, I had a blast with, and I'm having the time of my life with Doom (neither of which I've actually finished, yet)! The 007 franchise has had it's fair share of good games, and I really rather like 007: NightFire. There are three versions of this game (PC, Console and Handheld), and I'm only truly familiar with the PC version, so, I really couldn't tell you how each one holds up when stacked against each other. (Though, I suspect the handheld version is inferior, and the console version might be the better game.)

Left 4 Dead is a nice, simple, adrenaline rush, Team Fortress 2 is a wonderful breath of fresh air from all the lifeless F-Bombsquad marines that run around in gray environments looking for reasons to be sad and treat people like dirt all the time, in the most completely out-of-context way possible. I hear Ghost Recon is good, Counter-Strike was an interesting twist and the human race still has yet to catch up with Ricochet. At least... That's what Valve says. ...In Valve Time!

I loved the first Unreal's setting and narrative. I thought it told a great story without saying too much, and it really stuck with me, and got me thinking about the world when I wasn't playing.

Also, DEM GRAPHICS...

No FPS game has ever come close to entertaining me as much as the original Quake did. Playing online through my 28.8, oh lawd. The glory days! Quake is the best shooter in the history of the color brown.

Unreal tournament
My word, how did I forget these two!? I love these games! It's been too long... Quake is a neat somewhat scary, atmospheric series. However, I still don't understand how we go from "Medieval Castle" to "Outer Space"! Unreal Tournament was also fantastic. It's so much fun to jump so high, and I just loved that "Spider Mine" Gun, whatever it was called in 2004!

Half-life 1 and 2 are by far the best shooters ever made. Metroid Prime's the best console shooter IMO. Fuck Halo.

I vote for Killzone 2 single campaign. It really makes me think of what a trench war must have been. The lack of variety in the levels actually helps the sense of immersion. It's like a long dark descent without moments of relief. Not even at the end.

It's probably out of category here, but the first Thief game was excellent as well.
