Finally, vengeance. This first animated adaptation vs bob's most hated series first adaptation.

Of course Mario didn't get cake, cake is analogous for sex in Mushroom Kingdom. Instead of going through it, just look at any seen from Mario that includes cake and apply that analogy. Believe me, it works.

I found a subtitled AVI on Megaupload after a 10 second google search for "SMB: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen" It's not that buried.

Oh God, I remember watching a few scenes from this movie on Youtube. One particular scene scarred me for life when
Bowser transforms into a ballerina. No, I'm not making this up. Here, see for yourself:
It's around a minute and twenty seconds-AAAAAAAAUUUUUGGGGGHHH MY EYES! WHY DID I WATCH IT AGAIN?!

*curls into fetal position whimpering quietly*
Still, I find it fascinating to explore early incarnations of a well-known story or franchise, as it often provides some insight into what might have been. Sometimes you also run across ideas that were revisited later on (like Mario swinging Bowser around by the tail years later in Mario 64).

Wow, I never heard about this, that's epic! It actually looks like a good movie, better that the other one you told us about at least. I'd love to see it, with subtitles of course, anybody know where I could find it?
I have such a verson ^_^

Actually, as I looked at it, it reminded me of the Felix The Cat Movie [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_the_Cat:_The_Movie] that was made in the 80s, both visually as well as in a WTF sort of sense.
OMG I thought I was the only one to ever see or hear about that movie, I remeber channel surfing years ago and seeing a clip of it on disney channel, I was like WTF? since when is Felix the cat so dark or edgy? It reminded me alot of Satam sonic. I'd like to see them make a series based on that movie. I'm shocked that the nostalgia critic hasn't review this yet.

Despite that anime adaptation of Super Mario Brothers being far from perfect (or even great), that's exactly the kind of extra that Nintendo should package with a 15+ year anniversary edition of any of their flagship series rather than just release the things with minimal extras as they have done so far.

Besides, any anime that inspired (directly or indirectly) Wario and the final battle of Super Mario 64 deserves to be remembered for those contributions if nothing else!

If toads had been all-female I think, Mario would have been happy with what he had and just let Peach rot there

Actually considering the ending he probably went to enjoy himself with the toad-ette harem

This is exactly what 10 year-old me would have wanted from a Super Mario Bros movie. Present day me, probably needs the right combination of nostalgia and alcohol.

Great work as always Bob!

The clips from this movie reinforce my theory that before making an anime, the creators do a LOT of drugs.
Reinforced by the fact that the background undergoes a transformation into a psychedelic fantasy trip. Yeah I am so glad I have never heard nor seen this...film.

i dont care what anyone says, even though the mario brothers movie was a train wreck it was still probably one of the more faithful game to movie adaptations

So... In other words the Strange Anime version of Luigi was Wario. I wonder if that movie had anything to do with Wario.

I like the sound of the ending. It fits nicely with the normal slacker-turn-hero sort of slapstick ending where they never really manage to achieve anything, but hey water under a bridge, what can you do, get on with life sort of thing.

It's like you never really want the Chuckle Brothers to win, you just don't want them to lose either

EDIT: I figured it out, it's the plot of every Neil Gaiman book every written (spoilers!). The hero sets his affection on a woman he knows nothing about really and has no reason to set his affection on. He goes on his journey and at the end of his journey he's grown as a character and he comes to terms with the fact that his affection was made during his naive days and he'll just deal with the world as it is, aided by the experience of his adventures.

Other times it's a promotion that they never receive but realise that the promotion is petty compared to the big picture/they have the skills to leave and achieve success in other ways.

It's like a shifted coming of age story. The story ends with the character leaving his childhood behind and 'now the real journey begins'

Some of the animation looks pretty spot on for the later look of the characters (Bowser, some of the monsters), which is rather odd.

That cartoon looked kind of surreal... but it also looked like the most faithful film-adaption of the Mario series. I mean, it had the classic "Bowser kidnapping Peach" Plot, the classic enemies, the power-ups, even most of the character looked pretty much like they are supposed to look. I mean, the Mario plot is silly as hell but they did a good job of adapting it. It was closer to the games than the TV-Show or the movie.

As a non Mario fan, who hasn't even passed the second level on the first Mario, I think this anime looks pretty cool. It's astounding how far they went with just a few pixels worth of inspiration. Princess coming out of the TV screen? Holy cow. Plus the dog-prince thing is just awesome if you think about it... Now I'm off to look for the movie. Thanks Bob.
