It isn't dying if there are still people around to appreciate it, which there seem to be. It isn't as popular as it was, but popularity's overrated.

I think people are thinking Rock or Metal is dying is because there are no new rock or Metal bands incredibly popular this century like when Ac/Dc, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Rolling stones, Cream, Deep purple, Blue oyster cult, Dio, Metallica, or Jimi Hendrix. Now its only Avenged Sevenfold that i can think off the top of my head of the bands popular in the 20th century.

If Metal and Rock were to die out, I would laugh... because thats a funny joke. Than I would move to Scandinavia.

If rock and metal died I would probably never buy a CD ever again. Though I don't think that will ever happen, nor do i think it's happening. It's just that now most of the new good bands are from Sweden and Finland so they're more obscure here.

They're also raising a generation of children on things like "HeviSaurus" Yeah, that's Finland's substitute for Barney.
Kiddy Metal? Damn... too awesome for words...

Dying? Hardly!
my town just got our metal club, we are hilding concerts, teaching others to play etc.
we started up last month and we are allready over 100 members, that means 1/500 people in my town is a member. wich I recon is quite good, and I know lots of people who are about to join. in Norway, metal is still growing.

Mod: I love you.
OT: If the artists producing music stop doing so, then we still have the tracks that we listen to already for further pleasure, so there really isn't a major problem here.

Metal is most definitely alive and kicking.
Wouldn't this be categorized as Death metal or something? Trying to stay with the Names. So many my head is gonna explode.
Yes, yes it would. But it is metal, and very much alive :D

I don't think Metal is dying, they're evolving (please note that evolution is not necessarily a sinonim to improvement), there are new genres and new ways of making metal, and while you don't see new bands with the same style as Iron Maiden that doesn't mean they are shit, there are plenty of shitty bands around, that's for sure, but that's because there are so many new ways of making music most of these bands have a somewhat specific audience, they can't please everyone.

To me one of the greatest examples that present days metal bands can be as awesome as ever is Sons Of Seasons, so far they've got one album released and one on the way, and they are AWESOME in every aspect I can find (instrumental, vocal, lyrical), take a look and see for yourselves:

(also, forgive me if my writing is wrong, I've completed my English course quite some time ago, but now I don't get to use my English as often as I used to)

God i love being a scandinavian.. Metal is not dead. It's more than alive and kicking! Here in Denmark on the most popular public radio channel "DR P3" the metal band Volbeat, has more regular air time than Kanyee or Lady Gaga combined. Granted, it's not with their hardest song, but in my eyes it's still a step forward in the battle against Bieberfever.

On the same channel, every thursday at 11 am, there is something called "Torsdags Tons" (Translates into something like "Thursday Rock Out") where the host from a weekly _pure_ metal show plays a few tracks..

Again.. God i love being scandinavian, if metal is dying in the states :D

I will drop a few links for some of the more awesome Danish metal bands

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEiUrwfPrV4 Mercenary - Sharpen the egdes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkFhk4nxVtU&ob=av2e Hatesphere - Drinking with the king of the dead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwLz1RRp-20 Raunchy - Street Emperor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILrKxrQlnfE Volbeat Feat. Mark "Barney" Greenway - Evelyn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1lU61X23WQ&feature=related Volbeat - Fallen (this is the song from the radio)

You guys should definetly check these bands out.

I just said i listen to classical lol. Its weird. Every time i say i listen to classical music i get called a snob or something close. Even when its not snobbish. I just said i listen to classical music. Its like me calling someone a snob because they eat spinach lol.
You didn't just say "I listen to classical lol".

I happen to know of a university group in Saskatchewan that plays like this but worse. The lyrics, my god the lyrics!

*rages*

My fear is that this up and coming band's "style" becomes accepted by the general public as the definition of jazz. Should they make money, copycats will certainly arise and mimic it and ARRRGGGH!
Thats why i listen to Classical. I usually don't listen to a song By Beethoven and think "My GOD! This totally sounds like a song from Mozart" lol.
Quiet different. Perhaps you have difficulty recognizing snobbery? That's a possible explanation for why people call you a snob for seemingly no reason.

Srsly? Have you picked up "The Dethalbum" and "The Dethalbum II"??? Both were released in the last 3 years, and they are nothing short of some of the best metal albums around. And never forget Lamb of God!

Someone needs to do a version of that "PC gaming, happily dying for..."

In this case, rock has been dying for 60 years.

I'm not sure I care about Metal, generally speaking. There are metal bands I would miss, but I seem to have more than enough metal to enjoy. Metal's been happily dying for 30 years now, so there's another one we can mock. that's a scary one. both of these genres have been "dying" since before I was born.

Also, I hate how writing is a dying art form because nobody puts pen to paper anymore. The only true way to write is the way I determine it and everything else is wrong.

Let's say Metal and Rock are dying. That doesn't exactly mean all other music is shit. Even if it's your personal favorite, even if you have an mp3 player with nothing but Slayer and Iron Maiden, if you can't find a song outside of these two genres. You're either just not looking anywhere else, or lying to yourself, because It's fucking impossible that nothing else is good. I can say this with confidence because I for one hate metal, but have some metal songs that I love.

Over time, old, artistic genres evolve into newer genres that incorporate some of the old elements and some of the new. Baroque music evolved into Classical, which then evolved into Romantic music which finally evolved into 20th Century. Painting (and sculpture) went from depicting solid, immovable objects, to more naturalistic figures (contrapposto), to depicting single-point perspective (or more motion for sculpture), going through its naturalistic phase, and then going through movements like Cubism and Dadaism. But these older elements are still practiced and studied today.

So, in short: Art never truly dies. Stop worrying over nothing.

Yes, it's definitely dying.

Just because other genres are starting to pick up doesn't mean others are dying.
I read the first replies, and they didn't really do it for me, so I thought to write up a reply m'self, but my god, this. So much this.

I'm talking about this sentence specifically: "Just because other genres are starting to pick up doesn't mean others are dying."

OP should take a look at this sentence, examine it, study it, memorize it.

And then remember that every time he has any musical niggles to tell to someone.

A) Metal is doing better than it ever has right now.
B) Rock is kinda, but there are more rock bands that aren't 'alternative' are whatever right now than there have been for about 30 years.

So basically, you're very wrong. 2 days ago I was in Birmingham with 13000 other people and three great bands (well, 2 great bands and one ok one) that will all testify against you (A7X and Stone Sour (supported by Hellyeah!)) Wooo!).

Mainstream rock right?
Pretty much
Thats what the kids listen to no?
Well when you say all rock sounds the same these, i hope you were not implying the less popular rock bands "sounds the same", i seriously dont see how Radiohead sounds anything like Miasma And The Headless Carousel....
No of course
Less popular ones are the ones worth listening to

Yeah i probably will once i fight off people who hate on me for being a Juggalo first.
I'm even embarassed on knowing what a juggalo is, can't imagine how you're feeling at this moment as you've just admitted to be one.
I feel just fine. I'm just a fan of a group and nothing more.
Im quite sure that jonas brothers, justin bieber & co. fans feel fine just the same until they turn 30, realize what they've embraced in their former years, pull a smith&wesson to their chin and KABLEWTH.
Hey I'm 23 and I'm still enjoying their music. You shall not faze me, no matter what attempts you try mr.troll so go back under your bridge.
Stating facts isn't fazing or trolling son.
When you pull them out of your ass it is. You're just trying to make me feel bad for liking a group which is really stupid.
Ofc I'm not, what a thing to say. Now go paint your face clown-style and go listen to some rap son. :d
I shall and i will do so with other's who enjoy the music. We will rally together and shout WHOOP WHOOP from the rooftops.
SHOOP DA WHOOP? :d
