Ugh, I'm never good at questions like these. I suppose I could answer this with the portable game that I played the most ever. That game is Pokemon Red for the original Gameboy. I must've spend several hours a day playing that game when I first got it. The game seized my imagination as a child. I can remember replaying it several times just to see how well I'd do with different pokemon. It was also one of the only games I could discuss with my friends at school and they would know what I was talking about, since they also played Pokemon. Even my brother played it along with me. I soon became obsessed with pokemon like most kids my age, playing with the trading cards, watching the TV show, and getting all the cool merchandise. Eventually, I grew out of the Pokemon craze, but I still remember all the great times I had when it first came out.

The only other portable game that I've sunk such a large amount of time into is Meteos, and even then it still pales in comparison to how many hours I spent on Pokemon Red.

Old school game: Zen, the Intergalactic Ninja.

New game: Professor Layton and the Curious Village. I really can't put my finger on why this beats all of my other hand held games. It's just got this little ambiance and the feeling that it can be picked up and played at any time that keeps me coming back to it. Runner up: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Loved the ability to traverse the map after the story mode ended, kinda sad that they didn't add that to Fire Emblem: The Shadow Dragon for the DS.

Totally missed the Pokemon craze. I tried to get into it with Pearl but it was just too daunting a game for me to deal with at the time. Right now I'm contemplating a Dragon Quest 5 purchase, but I don't know if I'm ready for that commitment either.
You might want to avoid 5 if you found Pokemon too daunting. As you probably already know, your party consists mainly of collected monsters. At first, there's not much to it, but eventually determining the right team means a whole lot of party juggling and power leveling.

Game Boy / Game Boy Colour: Torn between Mole Mania and Metal Gear Solid Game Boy Colour.

Game Boy Advanced is a tie between Advance Wars, Metroid Fusion and Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town.

Nintendo DS: More than I can count. Don't make me choose, I love my handhelds!

My personal top 10:

10.Advance Wars
9. Fire Emblem
8. Wario Land 3
7. Metroid: Zero Mission
6. Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (Metal Gear Solid)
5. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
4. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
3. WarioWare inc.
2. Pokémon Gold/Silver
1. Tetris
We seem to have a ridiculously similar taste in handheld games :)

My top 5 would have to be

Advance Wars
Golden Sun
M&L: Superstar Saga
Pokemon Yellow
Tetris.

I think I have spent at least half a year on EACH of those games.

Moeru! Nekketsu RHYTHM Damashii: Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 is probably my favourite portable game, but it's quickly being caught by GTA: Chinatown Wars.

Tetris and the old Pokemon games were great. More recently I'd have to go for FF XII: Revenant Wings, any portable Mario game, and especially Mario Kart (worthy of a class all of it's own...).

gba- Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis

ds- any of the 3 castlevania titles

psp- god of war chains of olympus

i tried to make it all original titles. remakes are great but i dont think they should be considered the best handheld game if it was originaly on a console.

Pokemon: Crystal.

Before it got stupid, after it wasn't as well known.

Can anyone find a pattern in that?

Erhm, I'm not sure really. I had a game for the Gameboy Colour, which I think was a Zelda game. If I can remember correctly, you could ride a Kangaroo with boxing gloves, a crocodile and some other animal I can't recall. Feel free to fill me in with the name, since I can't remember it for the life of me.

I liked that game a lot.

Edit; I found out. It was actually two games, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages.

Lets celebrate the toy that gave an entire generation arthritis, I'll bring the tetris.

Although Super Mario and Mortal Combat need mentioning... Finish him!
