What made me a gamer was the Sonic series on the Mega Drive. My favourite of them is Sonic & Knuckles. I have all of them on my 360.

I can't really remember which one I played first, but it was either Halo: combat evolved, or Tenchu Stealth assasins.

Can't pick one that got me in to gaming as such, since I grew up with them since our first Vic20 (although Defender of the Crown and Boulderdash spring to mind), but the game that made me decide I wanted a career in the video games industry was definitely TES3: Morrowind. The idea that people had designed every single detail and placed every single item in to the world of Vvardenfell by hand blew me away. Everything about that game really, from the atmosphere and the design down to the in-game books you could pick up and read. Really glad that game didn't track the hours played...

Duke Nukem 3D sparked my interest, Tribes 2 made me buy a computer, Halo CE sealed the deal.

The X-Wing series of PC games, but mostly Tie Fighter.

A Wings STILL piss me off.

Ratchet and Clank 3. It sounds ridiculous I know, but it was my first (and most beloved) PS2 game, and it got me into 3rd and First-person shooters.

Anyone who still plays PS2, BUY IT.

Super Mario All Stars and Super Mario World were my first two games, but what sold me to video games and RPGs was Lufia II:Rise of the Sinistrals.

Yes, I played X-wing vs Tie Fighter for hours using a sidewinder joystick. That game was awesome and i would still play it if i could run it on my computer.

But the game or games that really made me a gamer were the Heroes of Might and Magic series. I started at Heroes 2 and have been playing all of them since. Awesome strategy game.

For me it was a combination of games in the N64 era that really sealed the deal in making gaming more than just a hobby for me.

Ocarina of Time
Goldeneye/Perfect Dark
Smash Bros.

Just to name a few.

Tombraider on pc. It was challenging, at times frightening but generally badass. I mean duel pistols, acrobatics, dinosaurs, aliens, mythology; it's an 8 year olds dream come true.
Also ever since then I've had a talent for 3rd person action adventures, even though none of the newer games in the genre really compare to the old TR games...

I'm pretty sure I'm the only one answering this:

Police Quest I.

I didn't even read English properly (it was 1988, and I was seven at the time), so my father had to translate. The game, though, was so immersive, so magical, so arresting (if you'll forgive the pun). A whole series of adventure games - much courtesy of Sierra, much courtesy of Lucasarts - later, I had learned the language way ahead of the curve.
