I wrote this list 15 months ago (whilst labouring with a slow PC)

- When the missiles start to fly in DEFCON
- Going over the bridge into the sunset in VICE CITY
- Bailing out of a VTOL jet over San Fierro in SAN ANDREAS
- The moment two large armies clash along a large fronting in TOTAL WAR (any)
- Moving out of the jungle onto the beach in FAR CRY
- Accelerating off the start to the sound of Ash "Lose Control" in the original Gran Turismo*
- Looking up and seeing that it's getting light again after playing just-one-more-turn-before-bed.

* I still can't get my foot off the pedal when that intro comes on the car stereo!

I'd now like to add

- Leaps of faith in ASSASSINS CREED
- Boating in bright sunlight, or fighting through burning trees and grass, in FAR CRY 2.

It's not really a sight, more of a moment, but in the epilogue of CoD4, when your character quotes The Naked Gun.

The first time you fight a Big Daddy in Bioshock
The first time you get to play with the gravity gun in Half-life 2
The first time you see Alyx Vance in Half-life 2
The first time you actually get a zergling rush to work on Starcraft
Every cinematic the Blizzard guys have ever made. At the time they were made, those things were absolutely breathtaking.
The just amazing amount of beautiful vistas in Oblivion.
Chainsawing your first Locust in Gears of War
And defiantly that last giant cut scene in Mass Effect between the Citadel forces, Sovereign and the Geth
Damn, wish I though of that, it's totally true, especially the Diablo games. Just awesome. My favorites are the opening cinematics of both, The first, with the images of the ransacked Tristram and the battles with demons, and the second, with Marius in the Rogue Tavern, then it getting attacked by The Wanderer. The fire in that one was amazing (you knew that was the part I'd focus on. Fire, Fire, Fire! firefirefirefirefirefirefire...)

I'm sure someone has already said this, but the first time you step out of the vault in Fallout 3. The simple fact your character is blinded, then thrown into a world scourged by a nuclear war and litterally given the mission "Off your trot, do what you want." makes you go "Christ, this is alot to take in."

Fallout 3- Liberty Prime destroying everything in its path, the MIRV

CoD4- The freaking nuke!

CoD5- The fountain scene of the first soviet mission with the eerie music playing, gorgeous.

Fable II- Your dog running up to you after you come back from the spire.

I liked seeing Megaton for the first time in Fallout 3. Don't get me wrong, first steps outside were awesome, but entering Megaton and seeing the shantytown first-hand was pretty awesome.

Gears of War 2, seeing the city in complete ruins was pretty awesome.

The first Russian segment in CoD5 was pretty good, I'll give you that.

Destroying the Imperial Guard's Stronghold as the Necrons in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade.
And Metal Gear Solid 4.
All of it.

Fallout 3- Nukage of Megaton.

CoD4: Blowing off that russian's arm off and limping away as the radiation from the nuke finishes you off.

GTA4: Robbery mission, epic.

On the gameboy, Golden Sun was a kickass game, favorite part is fighting the Kraken.

Oblivion: When you destroy a oblivion gate, damn its bright!

Warcraft 3: All the cinematic campaign videos, and wrecking online in 4v4 when your teamates leave and you still win against the overconfident enemies.

Command and COnquer:Zero Hour, nukes. nuff said.

CoD5: When you finish the Germans off the Reichstag and the last German alive gets up dazed and fires his walther at you, injuring you, then your comrade slices and dices him with a meat cleaver.

The opening cinematic of the original World of Warcraft.

And a bunch of other games have awesome sights that I can't think of atm.

Gah! How could I forget those two? Both truly epic moments.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Any battle with Advent beam weapons
Unreal Tournament 3: Looking over and seeing a darkwalker coming over the hill in torlan, and realizing it's AS BIG AS the hill.
Lost Planet: First encounter with the giant ice worm thing
Starcraft: 1000 massed scouts tearing through a hopeless sea of enemies
That dream I had about Shadow of the Collosus 2 made in the CryEngine
Dead Space: The bridge. I just walked around in there looking around at it and the rocks falling past outside for who knows how long.

The jungle level in halo 3. Damn thats some good lighting. Also, unlocking sonic in super smash bros. brawl.
I recall looking up at the lighting in one level going "Oh wow!" when a brute on a chopper ran me over. Worth it.

First seeing the outside world in Oblivion. I actually just stood there for a few seconds, taking it all in.
Excellent choice, and Morrowind was the first game I played where I enjoyed looking up at the sky for as long as it took a cliff racer to show up.

+1 The entirety of Mass Effect.
+1 First time outside in Oblivion
+1 Intro to Bioshock

Also, flying a chopper around Liberty City at night. It really does feel like an actual city.

I'm going with leaving the vault in Fallout 3, I thought it was far better than Oblivion's opening.

Besides that, i'd have to say that first fight in Shadow of the Collosus. I distinctly recall that upon first seeing it, a trudging giant that appeared as interested in me as a rock.

So to achieve it's attention, I shot an arrow at it's back.

As it turned around, I thought: [i\]"Holy shit.... what the [b\]fuck?[/b]"[/i]

I'll third the Oblivion thing. It was the first game I'd got for my new PC, and I hadn't played any PC games for years. So I load it up, and as I'm wondering around the dungeon, I'm thinking, 'Well, I suppose this is quite pretty...', and then you open up that door. I spent the next hour or so chasing butterflies and paddling in streams like some mediaeval nancy-boy.

Also, the trip down to Rapture in Bioshock left me pretty awestruck.
I'll vote for that too
My eyes widened and my jaw dropped for the first ever while playing a video game

But like Yahtzee says that it may be big, but its got little too do within the open range of the big map
