You were right on the money concerning Ghostbusters.

It never satirized the super-natural aspect (probably thanks to Dan Aykroyd) and the ghosts - especially Gozer's watchdogs - felt all the more threatening because of it.

This is still my #1 favourite movie ever.

Well, he did say that he had to leave a *ton* of movies off the list. I totally agree about The Princess Bride, and, I'll be the first to say it - The Dark Crystal should be on there, too.

Also, completely agree about the need for Terminator. I think we might need a third list, actually...

You covered the Universal Monsters but not the original Clash of the Titans?
You also missed everything from the 90's up, or did you just assume we've seen those already?

I?ve seen all these (and most everything from the last list, except maybe a couple of the Hammer pictures mentioned) and it is a very good list. There?s only a few things that were really overlooked:
Akira ? there needs to be an anime movie on a nerd movie list if if anyone sees one anime movie in their life, it should be Akira... Or Urotsukidoji if the person is more partial to torture, porn, and/or tortureporn.
Anything by Terry Gilliam. Really not one mention of Terry Gilliam? What about Time Bandits, Baron Munchausen, 12 Monkeys, or Fear and Loathing.
The list also needed a John Hughes film and there?s plenty that would?ve fit: 16Candles, Weird Science, or Ferris Buhler. All of them involve geeks getting really hot dates.
The other thing I don?t understand is how Spiderman 2 is even vaguely comparable to any of the original Superman movies. Am I really the only one who found SM2 with Peter Parker?s nonstop moaning and whining to be really tedious. I can?t even sit through the thing.
"But I don't want to be spiderman... boo hoo."

This week was almost the opposite of last for me, only a few that I haven't seen and only one that I hadn't heard of (Legend). Once again, Netflix will hopefully correct this for me once Canada becomes blessed with its presence. Just try renting half (probably more like 4/5ths) of these at an actual store.

Definitely need another list for 1990 until the present though.

Nice to see you mention Flash Gordon as I have always loved the hell out of that movie but you didn't mention how kinky that movie is and how Princess Aura kickstarted a whole generations libidos.

I'd say The Company of Wolves goes over similar ideas to Labyrinth but is much heavier and surreal

I don't remember if I saw at least one of those Star Trek films but I definitely did see every other film including Conan the Destroyer and Running Man.

The only problem I have is the insistence of Pre-Special Edition for Star Wars. I honestly don't care if Han Shot First, or if Hayden Christensen is Anakin's ghost.

I was hoping that the origional Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would make the list. That's still, for me, one of the greatest live action adaptations I've seen. Oh well.

Like people mentioned, The first two Terminators definitely deserve to be on there, but more importantly The Lord of the Rings Trilogy absolutely needs to be on there.

I'm Surprised that I have actually seen most of these movies.
I LOVE Patrick Stewart but...
I liked the Scifi Channel's Dune Saga better Okay!?

You are not alone my friend. I would join you in your shield but it's probably worthless against a flame crysknife.

I second the addition of The Neverending Story (and possibly the sequel as it's still based on the second half of Michael Ende's book).

Labyrinth. Awesome.

And "Today" does seem to end rather prematurely at 1989.

Dune but not Brazil?

You have freaking Dune but leave out Brazil?

If it weren't for the line about wanting to put all John Carpenter movies on the list you'd be dead to me right now.

I must admit I don't know what you are trying to do with this list. If its just an eclectic collection of movies that Nerds might like, you succeeded but if you are actually trying to say something, I am at a loss as to what that might be.

If you are trying to say that these movies "un-ghetoized" the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, I don't buy it. Some of those movies were failures that put the genres at risk (Legend, Flash Gordon, Dune) and Comedies (Ghost busters) that don't prove anything about the genre they are using or mocking as those are about the humor and not the setting, IMHO. In the meantime, movies that actually moved the genre like Close Encounters, Princess Bride, and Terminator are left off the list.

In the end, I take this as a list of movies that Bob liked. Cool story bro.

Well, think of it this way: those are the movies that came out before most of us were culturally aware enough to realize that movies actually mattered in any real sense. They are the films that came out before we kept an eye on what came out, those films that our parents had to introduce us to, or we would need to find for ourselves, not the ones we would (for the most part) have been able to go to the theater and immediately see. Think about it: how many of the films on that list, for those who were alive during the release of any of them, did you actually see in the theater? How many movies released past 1990 have you seen there? Yeah.

That said: I think there needs to be a part 3 with the movies from 1990 to now, but they need to be far more obscure. We've all seen the Matrix and Spider Man and the LotR trilogy, otherwise we wouldn't be interested in important geek movies from the past.

How many of us have seen Memento, Pan's Labyrinth, eXistenZ, Strange Days, Moon, Ghost in the Shell, 2001, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Descent, and Casshern? All of those movies (some big budget, some not, some famous, some not, some domestic, some foreign) are from then to now, all have very important geek cred, and I would bet very few people have seen them all. I'm sure we could create a more extensive list, but the fact of the matter is that since 1990 (well, 1996-ish) geek cred has actually become a positive marketing ploy and the sheer number of movied pointed at the nerd market has skyrocketed. If we wanted to list every movie made in the last 20 years that was nerdy and important, it would be a far longer list than Bob could put in his article.

But I second the "no Princess Bride?" thing... wtf?

BOOOOOOOOO! BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The fact that you put Big Trouble in Little China on this list alone has made me a very, very, happy panda. Very good list of movies and I couldn't agree more with them.

Generally all good, I LOVE Big Trouble in Little China.

Day of the Dead is truly the greatest zombie film of all time, not Dawn.
That was my only issue with the list.

Having said that, Dawn was much more influential and should be on the list for that reason, it just isn't a better movie.

What about Revenge of the Nerds. I mean this movie finally stated that being a nerd could be not only cool but even heroic. It stated clearly that we all have a bit of nerd inside us.

Just like list number one, this is nothing but sci-fi and horror. If you truly think that these are the only two genres that movies nerds like then you need a different job.
