Well, think of it this way: those are the movies that came out before most of us were culturally aware enough to realize that movies actually mattered in any real sense. They are the films that came out before we kept an eye on what came out, those films that our parents had to introduce us to, or we would need to find for ourselves, not the ones we would (for the most part) have been able to go to the theater and immediately see. Think about it: how many of the films on that list, for those who were alive during the release of any of them, did you actually see in the theater? How many movies released past 1990 have you seen there? Yeah.
That said: I think there needs to be a part 3 with the movies from 1990 to now, but they need to be far more obscure. We've all seen the Matrix and Spider Man and the LotR trilogy, otherwise we wouldn't be interested in important geek movies from the past.
How many of us have seen Memento, Pan's Labyrinth, eXistenZ, Strange Days, Moon, Ghost in the Shell, 2001, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Descent, and Casshern? All of those movies (some big budget, some not, some famous, some not, some domestic, some foreign) are from then to now, all have very important geek cred, and I would bet very few people have seen them all. I'm sure we could create a more extensive list, but the fact of the matter is that since 1990 (well, 1996-ish) geek cred has actually become a positive marketing ploy and the sheer number of movied pointed at the nerd market has skyrocketed. If we wanted to list every movie made in the last 20 years that was nerdy and important, it would be a far longer list than Bob could put in his article.
But I second the "no Princess Bride?" thing... wtf?
