I loved the design of the third generation pokemon. To me, they resembled what the first/second generation of pokemon would look like if they were real.
The list goes on.
Another idea would be to introduce a new style/aesthetic of pokemon for each new region we explore that isn't connect to another one. For example, the Johto pokemon resembled Kanto ones because they were part of the same land mass. However, the pokemon of Hoenn and Sinnoh were vastly different because they were isolated continents.
I am a little apprehensive of these starters, but who knows? Game Freak might pull this one off.
The connection between fire and pig are virtually non-existent.
there is a very obvious connection between them, Fire + pig = bacon, thus the second evolution should be some sort of bacon monster.
lmao on a more serius note i agree with the OP 100% i bet i could come up with better starters than WELL PAID PROFESIONALS and im only 16 years old these new poemon just suck balls
Mostly I think you're overthinking this just a bit, ok just a lot! Except for the part about Pokemon learning moves they're physically equipped to perform. That part I agree with completely. The thing that really grinds my gears is that the whole type alignment thing has been pretty much tossed out the window. For eg. say I meet a trainer who comes at me with a Fire-type Pokemon right? So naturally I whip out a water-type only to have a Thunderbolt tossed at me. WTF?
some pokemon look awesome, i personally like the look of the legendaries. the starter pokemon seem to get weaker and weaker tho, as do the pokemon that are available to catch early game, i meen, who wants a bidoof? lol

It could be that ancient Romans used to pour tar on pigs, light them on fire, and point them at the enemy to cause confusion.
I think every pokemon was awsome. Evan the lame ones. I would never use them, but they all made sense to me. I think everyone is overthinking this all. These games are NOT aimed at adults, but at children! Kids don't care if recent pokemon "dont make sense", they just ignore those pokemon and choose pikachu everytime (or whatever pokemon is their favorite, I'm a scyther person myself).
Here's a nice comic on the subject.

Perhaps its just that we (the original fans of Pokemon) simply out grew them and the only reason why we like the old ones is due to nostalgia. Or it could be the fact that after 400/500 some Pokemon they are running out of ideas. Or they have a new set of Pokemon-creators.
Either way I get the feeling this is all a bunch of "THEY CHANGED IT! NOW IT SUCKS!"
If a pokemon like Mr. Mime or Jynx was introduced in 4th or 5th gen, you'd complain about them just as much.
And what does Mr. Mime relate to in real life, anyway? A pedophile?
Pokemon is just a money-making title for nintendo. Little quality, little work, "new gen hype", they add 2-3 gameplay gimmick, profit, repeat.
They should just stop adding PKs (how many are there now? 500?)
Its too bad, because i think the setting is interesting and could be much more if it was taken seriously, and had a goo.. massive dose of common sense put into it. (like that webcomic "nerfnow" made me think that, we played it while younger.. liked it then, got older and dont like it nearly as much.. because thegame didnt evolve to keep up with "us")

First, let me start by telling you what I'm sure dozens of people have already said:
The grass type is a grass snake. That thing it's doing with its eye and mouth are called a 'smirk'. It is a standard facial expression for smug snakes. But you're right, snakes tend not to use their arms to attack. The fact that it has legs (and tiny arms) may be a reference to vestigial limbs, or it's just to make them more in line with standard starters.
The water type is an otter. The resemblance is immediately visible (it looks like a weasel and it's holding a shell on its belly). Surprisingly, very few facial expressions are the one worn by most starter pokemon. In fact, the one on Mijumaru is called a 'neutral' expression. That doesn't mean it's depressed, it simply means it doesn't need quite as much ritalin as other starter pokemon.
The fire type is a pig. You knew that. Pigs eat a lot. You knew that. It's one picture, designed to show what it looks like. You knew that. However, what you didn't know is that flames are often represented by a couple of colours. The yellow marking above its snout somewhat resembles a drawing of a flame. Speaking of which,
I love how you expect animals to be associated with elements. No, that wasn't sarcastic. Throughout history, different cultures have tried to explain why everything is. Both myths and the elements played major roles in this process. It's through this that we get the association of foxes with fire. It's also this process that gives us tortoises that carry landmasses on their shells, such as Torterra.
However, the biggest problem I have with your rules happens to be the first one: In order for the beasts to be interesting and believable to kids, they should be grounded in reality.
The first pokemon, #001, is a dinosaur/toad with a symbiotic plant in its back. This plant creates tentacles that resemble vines. This is obviously not your standard for realism, but right off the bat we hit some problems with that idea.
It is a video game. From Japan. About young children. Who travel around the countryside. Befriending wild animals (who apparently all have a decent level of intelligence). And turning them into energy and storing them in hand-held devices, regardless of their initial size. Sir, the moment you brought up realism, you lost.
I'm sure you have more convincing arguments, and I would enjoy reading them. All I've done here is point out why I think you're wrong, and there are likely a good number of flaws with my arguments.

I agree with OP. The creations they are spewing out seem to be more done out of desperation or is an attempt by the designers to see what shit they are allowed to get away with next.
Yes, the people whose food supply depends on their ideas are coming up with new, different ideas in order to keep selfishly feeding their kids. It's not that art styles evolve; all artists draw similar works throughout their lives. And it's certainly not as though some artists quit, get fired, or promoted; they're not really working in a business, after all. And they're most definitely not human beings, with crazy impulses and the susceptibility to boredom that only you have. As such, they are not allowed to make their, or rather your, pixels (well, not even pixels in this case; the whole thread is only complaining about their art) resemble anything other than twelve-year-old concepts.
Now, as a reward for those who have read all this patiently, and as a simplified version of my rebuttal (which absolutely nobody wants or asked for), here is the TL;DR.
I have to agree in that the OP was not slavishly calling every pokemon other than the first gen to be rubbish, personally I think the second generation had the least interesting pokemon, in fact the 3rd gen is the best so far.
Grounded in reality does not mean rigidly adhering to actual animals but ones that make sence within the framework of the setting, for a grass type pokemon to have whip like vines makes logical sence because leaves and vines are plant like and thus mix well a pokemon that is able to fly but didn't have wings would not mix well
Latias
Lugia
Pokemon are lacking variety a bit sure you can tell the difference but nither are really that distinctive and its worse if you compare latias to latios
Giratina
Is one of my least liked pokemon, the design is really dull and doesn't really create a sence of purpose, the god of antimatter? Really?

The only real point I concede to OP is how some pokemon don't show what they're typing is just by the look, having returned to pokemon on the 4th gen, after leaving in the 2nd gen, I had trouble understanding what pokemon's typing were.
The only second argument I have is that new pokemon save for some exceptions have a more friendly, less threatning look from the original line, but that's also due to the target audience of new gamers, while old players stay for the mechanics.
