In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

If it's abandoned then I guess we could all store our stuff there. Unless it's not abandoned and we're attacked by monstrous aliens. Seems like a win-win to me.

From my limited knowledge from a quick 5 minute search, I think it has to do with the rotation of the gases, stars etc. within the galaxy (I'm probably wrong here, feel free to correct me).

I don't think that I can explain it correctly in the limited space available here, since the physics behind takes a lot of time to learn (and write down).

But ShockValue's explanation is in principle correct, but simplified.

ShockValue, I think you're actually correct.
They form like that because they are rotating around a very heavy center (in the Milkyway's case probably a black hole). Gravity pulling stuff in and escape velocity driving stuff outwards keep a balance and create those beautiful discs.

Now, looking at all these pictures, I'm once again reminded of how insignificant we all are.
I don't know about you, but somehow that makes me feel at peace.
Like the universe, as a whole, will be okay. No matter what we do to ourselves.

You can get a new sun, but I'm keeping mine. We have a lot in common, and I'm finally comfortable with all its quirks.

Its gas is terrible, though.
