The video game that got you into gaming

When I first started playing videogames, I was just trying to 'fit in', and was never really involved in anything I played. Then two games happened to me at once, and forever more I was hooked. The first was Myst (which I remember playing with my mom), and the second was Planescape: Torment. I absolutely fell in love with their dark and depressing story lines, especially Torment's. To this day, I still take a few weeks out of the year to blow my mind playing Torment.

Definitely Super Metroid, first game that left me with my mouth open from it's great quality. Literally enjoyed the experience so much it made me dream about becoming a game designer myself.

Super Mario World when I was 3 years old. My dad owned the car rental company in the next town over and someone left a Super Nintendo along with Super Mario World and Street Fighter II Turbo. He waited the holding period for someone to claim it and when no one did, brought it home. Of course, since Street Fighter was SO violent, my mother wouldn't let my sister and I play (snuck it every now and then), so my time was focused on Mario and I instantly took to it. My dad and sister would play too, but it really confused them how they kept dying, and I would go on level after level after level without a scratch. But hey, 3 year old with power, that was me and I was damn proud of it.

First video game I played that peaked my gaming interest: Super Mario Bros.

The game that cemented my love of gaming and made gaming my number one hobby for the rest of my life: The Legend of Zelda.

Old-school Nintendo, how I love thee...

As funny as it would if I was, I'm not Eddie.
But you did have a friend who came on holiday with your family and ignored everyone while they played this game? Just not me.

I started out playing the Spyro series, but it was this series which truly captured my gaming heart:

God I don't remember anything specific. If anything it was probably the first time I SAW a video game that got me into it. I played computer games for 10 years before I owned a console or a handheld. However, I must say that the first serious game that I played, with a story, voice actors and everything, was Freespace 2 Colossus.

Rune, anybody know that one it was pretty advanced for it's time considering how few people played it. Halo got me into Xbox and warcraft 2 got me into PC

My brothers and my dad were always the ones playing when I was a kid, so I spent a lot of time watching and listening when they would get through a game.

The first one that got me into gaming was the first one they let me play, which was Final Fantasy 3/6. I went through a lot of battles for my brothers (since the levelling-up was the 'boring part'), and went crazy for the story and the music.

It's... jeez, 17 years later, I think? And gaming is an integral part of my life.

Call of Duty 4 really got me into it, I mean I still played games on my PS2. But I got CoD4 on PC which really started it all, before that I had never even heard of online multiplayer.

Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Raiders.

I still play that game at least once a year.

Back in, must have been '98, I was given my Uncle's (kind of) Gameboy and games. The first one I really remember is getting Pokemon Red for Christmas that year and being so happy, I've been gaming in one way or another ever since.

Crap, I must have been six then, has it really been that long. . .

Two of my first games are the ones that hooked me.
Mechwarrior 1 on my 286 got the hook in. Because it had giant mechs you piloted in real battles, it had a story, and it had multiple paths you decided via conversations. Nice work, kept it interesting.

Wing Commander 1 on my 386 (4mb RAM baby!) set the hook deep. Because it was about flying starfighters in desperate battles, had a long, engaging story, and had multiple paths for winning/losing missions and keeping copilots alive / failing to. Chris Roberts was a genius of the times, and modern games would do well to follow his lead.
