I don't actually care that much that Garrett has turned goth, but it worries me that Eidos doesn't realize he was never goth, to begin with. Makes me wonder what other fundamental aspects of the game they may have got wrong.

And then, this little gem: "He's now in the game doing more action moves". Way to reassure everyone who thinks this will be a "Not-Thief-But-AssCreed-Dishonored-Lookalike". I'm not bashing on either of those games (I haven't tried Dishonored yet, but I definitely will). But neither of these games is Thief.

Anyway, there's still The Dark Mod and the updated Thief 1 & 2. Because for me, as far as Thief is concerned, the gameplay is totally in 1998. When I want a different gameplay, I play different games.

I don't get what they're trying to do. It's like the XCom shooter and Syndicate remake all over again. Like, literally, the same issues. Have they just spent all their days huffing paint fumes before they go to work? Are they just trying to make all of the old gamers die of heart attacks so that there won't be any left to complain about the grey paste they make the new gamers pay to get a passing taste of?

If it was made as a first person view like the Thief:TDP and Thief 2:TMA his appearance would matter all that much so why are the devs messing with his look? Oh right cause he has to look like the dishonored guys gothy little brother my mistake.

Well on the brightside it looks like i can put off upgrading my pc a little more since I'm not likely to get this game at release.

Perhaps so, but one can never be sure on the internet.

Also, I didn't pay attention to anything having to do with DMC, so that wasn't exactly something that registered in my mind.

Plus, it gave me an excuse to say all of the complaints I have with this that have already been stated, so yeah.
It appears my Shakespearean writing and excellent satirical commentary has...
Okay, I'm just taking the piss now. What's funny about this is that he says we're not in 1998. I swear this guy saw what our Shakespearean mastermind and saviour Tameem said about what was cool 12 years ago isn't cool now and decided to copy paste it. He did subtract an additional 2 years, I'll give him that.

The sad thing is that if they were using another name people would be ultra hyped at another stealth-action first person game.
Oh yes, absolutely. But they aren't. They chose to use the Thief name.

If the guys from, say, Iron Maiden (to name an old "franchise" that has kept its roots stable throughout the years) suddenly wanted to do a Polka album (yeah, too extreme, I know :) ), they're totally entitled to it. But they had better not do it under the name "Iron Maiden".

Names matter. Anyone who needs a good example, just search for "queensryche dedicated to chaos" or "queensryche cabaret tour".

Ahem. That's *less* goth? Seriously?

He looks like a freaking panda!

I think I'm going to have to pretend like this remake never happened.
My thoughts exactly, this incarnation looks like he's in need of a blood transfusion urgently. As other's have pointed out, Garrett hardly looked Goth in the first place. I really hope this isn't portent of how badly they're going to make a mess of the reboot.

There is also the matter of writing the Hammerites and Pagans. Especially the Pagans, which - with their speech quirks and tree-hugging proclivities - could have easily become a joke instead of the delicately balanced mixture of whimsy and savagery they were in the first two games. Of course, the reboot might cut those factions out (probably to its detriment, since they are a critical part of the setting.)
Oh didnt you hear there is a rumor that there will be no hammerites in this game.

That?s their idea of less goth? He looks like a band member from My Chemical Romance.
Also I haven?t much experience with Thief yet but...when was Garret ever supposed to be Goth?
I thought he was just supposed to resemble a traditional rogue.
My Chemical Romance is not Goth.

On the article: I don't much care for the protagonist's look. Andy Chalk's writing however, my goodness that was actually entertaining. Loved the references, well done.

OK, consider my interest officially dead. Someone call me when the game has been out for 4 weeks, maybe I'll give it a look then. Until then, I'll be in my dungeon replaying T1 and T2.

"We wanted to bring him more for the modern audience of today's console market," Cantin said. "He's now in the game doing more action moves and that's how we wanted the costume and the suit to reflect that."

I'm sorry, but if you can't choose to 100% stealth this game (potential bosses I can let slide if they factor in stealth elements) then it's just not a Thief Game. It concerns me that it sounds a lot like a gothic Assassin's Creed so as to appeal to that audience, but then Deus Ex: Human Revolution was able to pull of leaning to action whilst having the option for complete stealth, so hopefully we'll see something like that here too.

All in all I'm still looking forward forward to this next installment.

You're right Andy he looks pretty goth to me.

Also: a reboot that focuses more on action in order to appeal to "the modern audience of today's console market"? How unusual.
They are really thinking outside the box with this one. Absolutely stunning originality of thought there. They should also bring in cover elements. And a 'partner' for online co-op missions.

Because you need that in a stealth game to MAKE IT MORE MAINSTREAMZ.

Ugh.

Balls.

After what I've heard so far, I'm expecting Deus Ex: HR with dark fantasy stylings. Also known as What Sells.

No to nail varnish, hello guy liner... Must be guys in there late 30s taking guesses at youth culture. Oh dear.

When to we start the "No to Thief action moves" campaign?

Part of what was good about thief was that he didnt move like a super human, he was very human just very sneaky when done right.

Wow. Just... wow!
One of the few franchises I was looking forward to and now this.
I sure would like to ***** about the stupidity of the developer and stuff but everything that has to be said already has been said in this thread. I will boil down my disgust to a simple

HOW COULD YOU!?

I will still wait for this game but I will also wait till it is out and I have read the reviews. And if I like it... I will still wait TWO WEEKS till I buy it. Yeah, I channeled Jim Sterling here, but the man is fucking right.
No more prorders for me. No more trust. Seems like the industry wants it that way.
The industry also seems to have a thing for pandas.

Garrett was goth? Wh-...? I don't remember that!

He pretty much looked like your average D&D rogue: medieval skin-suit, accessories & baubles everywhere, cape, mask... He also didn't have milky-white skin, soulful dead-poet eyes and a pained expression - he looked normal, and more than a bit ugly.

Christ, what are these people doing?

If this was a reboot, I might have tolerated a drastic, DMC style change for Garrett that transforms him into a different character entirely. But this looks like a half measure. They so want to be Assassin's Creed, but they want to appeal to new people, but they want to appeal to the core fans. The result is an over designed mess of generic fantasy thief laces, belts and straps. Much like how Assassin's Creed 3 wanted to combine a native American, Colonist, and 12th Century Assassin into one garb.

This design has ended up looking ridiculous.
