I kind of agree with this. I like a challenge, and hard games where you die a lot can be fun (I beat Mario's lost levels). But when the game goes out of it's way to give me the one finger salute and piss on my corpse every time I fail I don't want to keep playing, I want to snap the game in half. "Well if you couldn't do it first time surely you'll be able to do it with half your max health and all your items gone," Yes Demon Souls, I can see the logic in that.

Ignoring the overall genres I dislike, such as FPS games, and moving on to things that would actually ruin a game for me that I otherwise would enjoy:

1) Half-assed character creation. Look, if you offer character customization, go all the way with it. If you want to tell a story about one specific bloke, then don't offer character customization. Just say "Here's your bloke, now play the story." If you let us change things about who the protagonist is, then let me change my bloody gender. Not bothering to do this does send the message that you don't care if I play your game.

2) Not supporting your games. Obsidian is still on my list because of KotOR II. I understand that LucasArts forced them to rush the release, but there is NO excuse for them to leave it in that state. We were quite capable of patching games in 2004.

i know i'm probably gonna get alot of crap for this but i'm not really into rpg's what makes matters worse is alot of cool idea's have been wasted on them

Why would you get crap? I love RPGs, but there's a good reason why it's one of many genres; not everyone likes the same game.

OT: Being a gamer for most of my life, I'm pretty jaded. Among my instant-quit triggers are:

-Lengthy Tutorials with lots of text (Put a sign next to a contextual area that shows a button, and we're good)
-Poor clipping mechanics
-When dying makes you start ALL OVER
-Mistakes that cannot be undone at the end of a level that require you to start ALL OVER
-Annoying music
-Unskippable cutscenes
-Poor controls
-Accelerometer controls (iPhone racing, Mario Kart Wii steering wheel, etc.)

I could go on, but I feel I've said enough.

Metro 2033 did this with the gas masks. Listening to someone breathing hard like that CONSTANTLY annoys me to no end and I quit playing that game because of it.

Sucks because otherwise it wasn't a bad game.

Heartbeat noises bother me too. I can tolerate them for short periods but at length it's annoying.

When the primary selling point is the game's multiplayer.

I don't mind this in games like Brink or Quake, obviously, those are purely MP games, so they get a pass. I'm looking at you CoD, BF, Killzone, et al. Sell me on the single player, not the MP that I don't play.

This is one of the few I agree with, and this WILL stop me from buying a game unless all my friends get it and literally start to salivate when they describe it. I want a bloody single player campaign, otherwise I would spar or chase dogs with someone...

1. Over the top sex appeal: I get it, men like boobies, but honestly, it's awkward to play or to watch these character models, especially when the camera always focuses on the money shots. Also, most female characters somehow 'sashay' when they walk to show off how curvy their ass is.

2. Zero-choice/customability: Don't get me wrong, many games have been great as totally linear, but I find it so much more fun to be able to do things the way I want to do them. Even Mario gives you the choice of cracking open the boxes for coins or other potential goodies OR to just keep bumbling through the levels.

3. Turn based ANYTHING combined with random encounters: This I find annoying because turn based combat is really slow and random encounters are so frequent. It lengthens gameplay, but not in a fun nor engaging way.

4. Annoying leads: This one is pretty self explanatory. I don't want to play as a douchebag nor as a goodie two shoes. I just want to play a normal human being.

5: Gratingly bad voice acting: OH GOD, WHY?

I preorder games when I have the money because I don't know if I will when they come out. Here's hoping my "preorder prudence" doesn't come back to bite me, because if they screw up ME3, we're through. This coming from a long tome Bioware guy

Bad AI. It might be enemies that have supernatural skills to shoot me in the head with machine guns over 3 miles away (Crytek, looking at you) or are too dumb to not shoot me even if I am standing next to them (Deus Ex).

Also, games that use "challenging" as a feature (Ninja Gaiden, Demon's Souls)

Note: I don't mean like Pokemon. At least with Pokemon, you can DO SOMETHING with your collection besides just piling it into a corner and dusting it every week.

I usually give a game a chance before giving up on it. It "dies" when its just too much..

When grindings is both boring and required to progress in a game. I can handle some grinding if its fun to do it.

When cutscenes show the character behaving in stupid ways, or when the game steal away my control to force me to watch something bad/obvious happen while i just stand there unable to do anything at all (otherwise i might be able to stop or avoid it.. but NOOooo, gotta watch your cutscenes/scripted events kid! Doesnt matter is it just broke the gameplay laws we just showed you previously, its plot! Who cares about consistency when you got plot?)

When the gameplay is too linear and/or repetitive.

When the choices i have access to are badly done and/or don't matter.
My main example: Power-wise, in Oblivion, magic is better than everything else put together. Mages can do everything a rogue and a warrior can, but even better, faster, cheaper... and i don't like playing mages at all.

edit- bloody screens!! So reel! I can't stand them. Its just so irritating to fight the game to be able to see anything at all.

I'm with the OP, I'm not a fan of RTS games, I don't have the patience for that. Especially when it's done badly or just a poor man's version, I'm looking at you Brutal Legend. Although I will sit through turn based games....odd.

Oh and escort missions, those suck and will never be fun. It's the main reason why I hated the second half of Silent Hill 4.
