If The Orange Box counts, then that is where my heart lies.

If not.... then screw you, I still say The Orange Box.

EDIT: That said, I'm fairly confident Dragon Age: Origins will be a hot contender when it's released.

I never imagined that this would be what finally convinced me to sign up, but I guess I don't know myself as well as I thought. Going through the list on Wikipedia, I have realised that a lot of games I first thought of were actually from 1990-1999. That was quite a revelation for me, but I persevered and here's my list:

2000: Legend of Zelda - Majora's Mask This was a hard choice, especially since my runner-up seems to also be a slightly underliked part of a franchise. (That runner-up would be Final Fantasy IX by the way).

2001: Legend of Zelda - Oracle of Seasons/Age These games took up a lot of my time, but otherwise it was quite a dry year for me (I didn't play many games in 2001 apparently) so I have no runner-up.

2002: Ratchet & Clank Awesome game, I wish I still had a PS2 to play it on. Compared to 2001, for me 2002 had far too many good games in it. My runner-up is Super Smash Brothers Melee, but honourable mentiosn must go to GTA: Vice City, LoZ: WindWaker and Metroid Prime.

2003: Command & Conquer: Generals My introduction to RTS, this game helped me realise that I was no good at RTS but enjoyed the genre anyway. My runner up for 2003 is Primal, and I can't help but give an honourable mention to Mario Kart: Double Dash since I'd pick it over the Wii version anyday.

2004: Evil Genius Took far too many hours of my life, but who doesn't dream of managing a base of goons and threatening to turn off gravity if the world will not cave to your demands? My runner-up was Half-Life 2, because while it's a great game in my opinion Evil Genius trumps it.

2005: Guild Wars Over 800 hours played in the last year. That's a scary number to me, but at least that was 800 hours of fun. My runner-up is Truama Centre: Under the Knife, which I never finshed as I am still stuck on Savato(I think that's the name), the final level in the main game. Honourable mention to Resident Evil 4 (although I didn;t play it until Wii release).

2006: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade Best game I played in 2006 (apparently another drought year for me) and really enjoyed. My runner-up goes to The Godfather: The Game.

2007: Team Fortress 2 Got it in the Orange Box, but I think the game itself deserves the title instead of the Orange Box. Not because the other games were anything but excellent, but that I feel that multiple games shouldn't take the title. My runner-up is Crackdown, and an honourable mention to LoZ: Phantom Hourglass.

2008: Rock Band Although the priceiest game on the list, the money was well worth the improvements over Guitar Hero for it's multiplayer. When I'm home from University, me and my Highschool friends still occassionally get together and play. The runner-up this year is Left 4 Dead.

2009: Minecraft It has been a rough year in gaming for me, due to a lack of funds (being a student sucks, moneywise). Minecraft is a sandbox builder game, but it is so much fun for the price (free at the moment since it is in public alpha). My runner up is another small game, Plants vs Zombies which has provided cheap entertainment in a year so worried with finances.

Out of my choices, I'm going to say Ratchet & Clank.

Wow, I didn't realise that I would write so much, so I bolded the games and year for your conveinence.

I can't really decide, but Braid is a possibility for me. Then again, Morrowind was absolutely awesome as well. And Diablo. This is really hard.

Interestingly, I'd rank Rez, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Operation Flashpoint (all from 2001) above everything in this list except Silent Hill 2.
If you have a look at this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_in_video_gaming you'll see why, there is also an equivalent list for each year, 2000 and 2001 seem to have more than their fair share of quality releases. Maybe it's just rose tinted glasses but I had a much harder time picking my favourites from 200-2005 than for the last few years.

No Half-Life 2 on that list? Really?
Half-Life 2 came out in 2004. Rome: Total War is the greatest game of all-time, and also came out in 2004. Therefore...

Plus, as you can clearly see from my choices (and my username), I'm not into shooters.
so you ask us our opinoin and don't give a list that will appeal to people EXCEPT poeple who like RTS/RPGs? whatever, I'm too tired to argue right now...

I'll just say Blazblue and call it a day

Not my game of the decade but the game of the decade would have to be World of Warcraft and mine would have to be Orange Box

00- Shogun: Total War
01- GTAIII, Special recognition to Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Ages and Seasons
02- TES III: Morrowind
03-Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
04-HL2, Special recognition to GTA San Andreas and Legend of Zelda Minish cap
05-Black And White 2
06-TES IV: Oblivion
07-Bioshock
08-Left 4 Dead
09-Saints Row 2 (At the moment. L4D2 still hasn't surfaced).

Those were picked as best in year, I'm pretty sure it'd look a lot different as my top 10.

2000 - American McGee's Alice
2001 - Phantasy Star Online
2002 - Resident Evil 0
2003 - Silent Hill 3
2004 - Half Life 2
2005 - Perfect Dark Zero
2006 - Enchanted Arms
2007 - Portal
2008 - Prince of Persia
2009 - Wet (should it live up to my expectations) the best game I've played so far this year has been Prototype so it should be better than that. If neither then Brutal Legend, hopefully.)

All time winner is Silent Hill 3.

Came out last year Word. I'm agreeing with you about the top 10 of all time. God knows how I'd pick that out though.
Ninja edit. Apparently the PC version came out this year. My bad.

I see at least someone else has played the HOMM games.

Heroes V was okay, but not as fun, imo.

Stalker Shadow Of Chernobyl.

Amazingly atmospheric, actually made me jumpy and once completed made me actually go away and find out more about the history surrounding the place. Now with the Stalker Complete 2009 mod the most atmospheric game I have ever played has gotten much much better. I just came out of the X18 lab after having the crap scared out of me in to a pitch black night with the most epic of thunderstorms going on, most realistic in game thunderstorms I have ever seen, wandered back to the Duty outpost and sat round the fire and just listened to what the guys were saying, I actually felt safe and secure and didn't want to leave until morning came and the thunderstorm moved on. A game that made me feel like I felt as a kid during a mid night thunderstorm... wow.
