No Half-Life 2 on that list? Really?
Half-Life 2 came out in 2004. Rome: Total War is the greatest game of all-time, and also came out in 2004. Therefore...

Plus, as you can clearly see from my choices (and my username), I'm not into shooters.

I've played Rome, and didn't care for it too much- it was fun for a while, but I've always preferred Real Time Strategy to Turn Based. And to dismiss Half Life 2 (or Portal) as simply "shooters" is to do them a great dis-service.
Right. I get it. Valve is god, their games are wonderful, nothing can hold a candle to them. Never mind that I've played HL2 and Portal (thanks to an Orange Box-owning friend) and got bored in minutes.

Also, I don't know what parallel universe you live in, but Rome (and Total War in general) ain't a turn-based game...at least not where the fun parts (the battles) are concerned.

As an aside, take another look at that list and tell me again how you could possibly get the idea that I would enjoy a game like Half-Life 2...assuming you've heard of any of the games I mentioned up there besides Total War and Elder Scrolls games.
You are saying that ROME:total war is better than Half-life 2...you seriously need to get off the fanboy drugs...look at your "games of the year"...Mount and blade ??? you have to be kidding me

Actually two months and a year, but I'm going to say it's going to be Assassin's Creed II.

It is.

IT IS!

Personally, my favourite game of the decade to which I still play now is Neverwinter Nights. It only slightly eclipses Portal for me as while I find portal an enjoyable game, I basically spent the time I should've been doing my uni degree breaking open a barrel for the umpteenth time.

But as far as what I'll pick to be the top game of the "naughties"? HA! As we can already see all the FPSers will be soapboxing the source engine while the RTSers have Rome and RPers lining up behind Elder Scrolls (actually puzzled it took someone until the 27th post to mention WoW at all). Considering that my life has been spent mainly playing 2d side-scrollers or RP games, I'm gonna have to say Portal will probably take the cake. I haven't had that much fun in an FPS-style system since Perfect Dark for the N64. Portal was innovative, fun, and as long as it should have been. Any longer and everything would be too "samey" while any shorter and you'd be wondering why you bought it. Wonderful graphics, great idea. I know there are those who rate it as sub-par, or just simply aren't interested. But I think as far as popular opinion goes, there's a lot of people who would back it in a pinch.

2000:Majora's Mask
2001: Super Smash Bros Melee
2002:Kingdom Hearts
2003:Viewtiful Joe
2004:Tales of Symphonia
2005Resident Evil 4
2006Kingdom Hearts 2( Oblivion is right behind it)
2007FF6 advanced
2008:persona 3 FES(stole Vesperia's spot)
2009:SMT:Devil Survivor

I'm gonna give it to Persona 3 FES for it's humongous amount of old and new content, a great cast and story, and fun game play.

Portal

In a decade of gaming ruled by the physics-engines, stands a small, well written, well excecuted, well F**KING TESTED game that created more hype and viral fallout than much else that have spawned these last 10 years. All this was achieved WITHOUT A SINGLE QUICK-TIME EVENT.

True, we still have a good 15 months left before the celtic calendar throws in the towel.
And there have been much good gaming to be had in my lifetime, but in the end, each and every one of us will have some memories for what made each game awesome. My most awesome gaming experience since Zelda:OoT, is Portal. There will be a lot back and forth what is the greatest game of the decade. Morrowind, Rome: Total War, Halo, Super Mario Galaxy, WarCraft3, GTA VI. There are a lot of fantastic games, of different genres, of different times and styles.

I will live to be very old, without forgetting any one of these great games. But I will still twitch a little, whenever I see a birthday cake...

The GAME of the Decade has to be Halo 3, whether you liked it or not!

No game had more build up, no game had more hype, no game has ever had as big a debut (except maybe E.T.). and no game is STILL played with as much ridiculous fervor. Best Selling game of 2007, the fastest pre-selling game to date, made $170 million in one day, and made every FPS since the 1st one try desperately to be a "Halo-killer", all failed!!!

Halo 3 and the Halo series defined the new era of gaming and defined the 2000s as the decade where gaming became an entertainment fixture.
Oh god no! This means that we're for ever going to be defined as the era that:
1) Ragequits all the time
2) Explodes at every slightest advantage in the enemy's favor
3) Uses the word 'gay' and variations of to describe anything we don't like
and last but not least, the generation that will go down in history as:
4) Being able to jump 8 feet up, but not three feet forward.
The world may never understand what happened to Earth's gravity this decade.

Dude, just because it was popular doesn't mean it was GOOD.

Too bad Mafia II comes out in 2010.

Mass Effect, Modern Warfare, Mafia, Max Payne, maybe GTA San Andreas.

Of the decade? Diablo 2. Why? Cause I lost half of the decade playing it.
I laughed (because embarrassingly I also played it way too much in the early part of the decade.)

D2 could probably be made into a training manual on conditioning and psychological addiction. It's just such a rich example of unpredictable rewards encouraging repetitive and monotonous behavior... it's almost scary.

As far as the 'best game', I don't really feel qualified to comment. Perhaps my favorite has been WoW, even given its many terrible flaws.

Wow. Its almost 2010 isn't it? I just realized that.

Anyway...

2000: Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask
2001: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty or Silent Hill 2
2002: Kingdom Hearts (I'm pretty sure it came out in 2002. If I'm wrong let me know)
2003: Jak II or Maximo Ghosts to Glory. (I'm fairly certain I'm one of the few who liked the latter)
2004: Half Life II
2005: Kingdom Hearts 2
2006: Oblivion
2007: Bioshock or the Orange Box
2008: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
2009: Batman: Arkham Asylum

If I had to pick one...MGS4 is my favorite game of all time with Majora's Mask as an extremely close second

I don't feel like looking up release dates, so I'm only going to mention my pick for 2009, which is going to be Batman: Arkham Asylum. I'm going to be playing this game over and over and over again for years. And that is extremely rare for me to do. I've already gotten all of the achievements and played through it twice. I'm working on writing a guide for it. And I'm considering purchasing the PS3 and PC versions as well in order to get trophies and an extra 1000 gamerscore (PC version is GWL enabled). I've never done that before with any other game...that's how good Arkham is.
