Temple of Elemental Evil - 2004

Fantastic game, and despite what those silly Planescape fans say, it is easily the best AD&D RPG.

PC: World Of Warcraft. Because it changed gaming forever.
Honorable mention: Portal. For making a whole emotionless cynical generation of gamers smile.

Consoles: Final Fantasy XII. For the 12 hour long Yiazmat fight. Looks like some people out there still do have the hardcore players in mind and that's good to hear.
Honorable mention: Shenmue II, for sucking me in like a black hole.

The Game of the
(Decade) is obviously...

...

Okay, seriously? I never pick a Game of the Year, or any other kind of favorite, so the "Game of the Decade" will just have to remain a joke in my case.

It's almost that time again, time for decade retrospectives where some journalist with too many deadlines and not enough creativity drags out Shogun and Empire and says "look how gaming has changed from 2000 to 2009" or some such bullshit. But it does invite the question, what's the best game released in this first decade of the 21st century...and is there anything that could come out between now and December 31 to take away the Game of the Decade title from your current clubhouse leader?

I'll break down my list by Game of the Year for each year since 2000:

2000: Final Fantasy IX (the last time a console game was worthy of this award)
2001: Tropico
2002: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
2003: Rise of Nations (in a close battle with SimCity 4)
2004: Rome: Total War
2005: Hearts of Iron 2 (barely edging out Civilization 4)
2006: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
2007: Europa Universalis III (it's my list, and Portal's not my style)
2008: Mount&Blade
2009 (so far): Empire: Total War.

Anyone who knows me knows this isn't much of a contest, with Rome taking my Game of the Decade award, and nothing conceivably poised to top it (Empire tried but came up well short). So what's the forum got?
Everyone has different favorites. Instead of going by year, how about going by genre? Sim game, RTS, RPG, MMORPG, FPS, fighter, artillery, platformer, casual, and sports. Add any others I forgot.
My pick: RTS: Warcraft 3
Fighting: SSBM
RPG: Fable
MMORPG: WoW
FPS: Halo
Sim: Sims 2
Artillery: ...Worms?
Casual: Peggle
Sports: Wii Sports
Edit: forgot platformer: Portal

I'm having a hard time choosing the best game of the decade between saints row 2 and brutal legend.

If given a choice of 10 games for no other reason then I loved them and played the shit out of them they would be (in no order):

Half Life 2
May Payne
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Resident Evil 4
GTA: San Andreas
Call of Duty
Hitman: Blood Money
Tony Hawk 2
Sims 2
Splinter Cell

Hmmm, well in my top 5 games, only the first one (Final Fantasy VII) came out last decade, so my game of the 2000's must inevitably go to my second favorite game of all time. Hence:
Portal.

It's amazing how much games have changed in 10 years. In 2000 I don't think they'd even released the last generation of consoles. I honestly can't choose a game.

EDIT: Wait, I have it: Duke Nukem Forever! So what if it was never released, we've been talking it about for the last decade haven't we? It's probably one of the most talked about games of the last ten years so I nominate it.

My head will explode if I have to decide such a thing :S
Besides, I started gaming around 2003, so I don't really have a goty for each game of the decade.

Game of the year, current year, so far: Risen, for being the only game I've actually finished.

Game of the decade: 1602 AD. Despite the sequels, it was this game that I spent the most time playing. Runner ups: Titan Quest, The Orange Box, Age of Mythology.

Game of all time: Age of Empires 1, for being inspirational to me.

Per year:
'00s: 1602 AD
'01s: Cossacks: European Wars
'02s: Age of Mythology
'03s: Possibly Sim City 4
'04s: Half-life 2
'05s: Guild Wars
'06s: Titan Quest
'07s: The Orange Box
'08s: Mass Effect PC
'09s: Risen

Technically speaking 2010 is still part of the current decade. When we switched from BC to AD (Or BCE to CE)we started on AD 1 rather than AD 0. So we still have over a year to go.

Keep in mind I only have a PS2 for now. There are undoubtedly games on the Gamecube/Wii, 360/PS3, and/or PC that would do better to impress me in some of these feilds.

For music: Shadow of the Colossus
For graphics: Final Fantasy 12
For gameplay: Resident Evil 4
For story: Beyond Good & Evil
For characterization: Psychonauts
For comedy: Crash Twinsanity
For drama: Silent Hill 2
For horror: Silent Hill 3
For flight simulation: Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

I have conciously omitted games like Rock Band/Gutiar Hero because they're glorified albums with content that distract me from the music, which is the only part I would like.

I also find it painfully stupid how the opening poster is bias against consoles and especially toward RTS games. Please take your PC elitism and switch it with that head up your ass.

This is a thread about opinions, and the OP's opinion is every bit as valid as your own. Nowhere did he bash consoles in listing his favorite games.

Play nicely, or you won't be playing at all.

You've got decades confused with centuries. The 21st century started on January 1, 2001, but decades are generally regarded by the tens digit...you wouldn't say 1980 was part of the Seventies because the Seventies encompassed "Nineteen seventy-..." where the ellipsis denotes either nothing at all (1970) or one through nine.

Centuries are a mathematical construct, decades are a popular construct. So "2000 was part of the Nineties" is incorrect, although culturally it gets foggier (consider that "The Eighties" on a cultural level didn't really end until Nirvana released Nevermind and Pearl Jam released Ten, sounding the death knell for '80s rock...in the fall of 1991.)
Decades are as much a mathematical construct as Centuries but I understand what you are saying. But the number 0 does not belong to the "ones" (numbers lower than 10) but 10 does. Ever tried to look at the logarithm? log(10) = 1 whereas log(9) = 0,9542... So mathematically 10 is the beginning of the next decade of numbers. Of course log(0) is not a defined number but then again 0 is a weird entity in mathematics.
Irrelevant. People are going to say the decade ends at 2009- just as the 90's ended in '99. 80's in '89, etc. Get over it.

Also- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000%E2%80%932009

Now, hush. I'm sick of people saying this. It's stupid.

2000- No opinion. All games sucked.
2001- Halo: Combat Evolved
2002- Super Mario Sunshine (yes, this game was awesome; he had a freaking water pack, that's innovative; shut up)
2003- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
2004- This is a tough one. I'm going to have to say Half-Life 2. Objectively (in my opinion: try to wrap your head around how that makes sense), it was the best game. However, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II is my favorite game of the year. Again, try to make sense of that (I'll help you: it's how, sometimes, you can see that a certain band has more talent than others; however, that does not mean they're your favorite band).
2005- Resident Evil 4(I suppose I could put KOTOR2 for PC here, but that's cheating)
2006- Dead Rising
2007- The Orange Box
2008- I really have no opinion here. There weren't any great games. Grand Theft Auto IV was OK, but I don't consider it a masterpiece in any way. And Left 4 Dead isn't a complete enough experience to be put here. I'll say GTA4.
2009- I haven't played a single big release of this year, except RE5, so I will say nothing for this one.

All in all? The Orange Box. It's the best video game deal in history. You can't compete with five great games for 60 bucks.

Now, judge me because I put Halo on the list. Go ahead.
