Too much sex and nudity in TV/Movies?

You know, I'm 38...so I remember what TV and film was like in the 70s/early 80s...and there was a lot more nudity back then than there is now. Before PG-13, there were boobs all over the place in PG films.

We're just getting more and more prudish.

As for being scandalized by nudity and sex on pay cable...it is pay cable, one of the few places where they can do that. They also precede every episode with ratings warnings...so if you can't handle a boob, you are forewarned and can then shield your delicate eyes.

Although I had a small debate about the subject of sex in video games with my (now) ex-girlfriend and her dad. They seemed to think that video games were moving as a whole towards sex simulators (based most likely on what they heard you can do in the GTA games, even though you don't actually see graphic sex). I tried to explain that while sex as a theme is present in games, you don't get to see it and it's not like porn. Prime example (and the one I used) was Mass Effect. You can "have sex" with one character in each game and it basically amounts to a one night stand. But you really don't see any nudity and what you do see, a bit of ass and a side-boob, is way more tame than what we see in movies/TV, which is generally accepted as OK. But they, mostly her dad, didn't want to accept that video games weren't becoming porn simulators. UGH. /end rant.

If anything, the ability to pursue a relationship in Mass Effect (and ANY Bioware game nowadays) significantly adds to the game. Most people when they play a game tend to pick favorites with the characters, so giving you the ability to take that favoritism to the next level gives you an indescribable connection to that character and adds to the experience.

Just read Yahtzee's "Extra Punctuation" about his gay character in Dragon Age 2.

I agree with you completely! While I didn't feel that kind of personal connection when I played through Mass Effect either time I played and I had a relationship with Ashley and Liara, I definitely felt more of that connection during Mass Effect 2 with Garrus and Tali. Both characters were revealed on a deeper level and I thought it was awesome. It made the game that much better, to the point where I was pissed off and reloaded the game so Tali would survive the suicide mission. I didn't want her to be dead, as she is one of my favorite characters. A similar occurance took place when Garrus almost slid into oblivion after defeating the human Reaper. I actually jumped off the couch yelling "GRAB HIM!!" until Shepard did.

Long story short, if the relationship is presented in a meaningful that matters and makes you care more about the characters, it's a good thing.

America barely gets to see anything. The last time I ever saw any kind of nudity on TV was two episodes of NYPD Blue. Jimmy Smitts got naked during a scene and we saw his butt, as well as an episode in the later season showed a woman's butt, can't remember who.

Plus, there was a Simpsons episode once where they were in England and the patrol officer was a nude woman. Once again, only saw her butt.

Beyond the rear end, and even in extremely rare occasions, there's no nudity ever on American TV. As for sex? Well... Even that's pretty rare. Worst you'll see is something South Park might show... Who knows.

To answer your question, no. There isn't too much sex or nudity on TV.

That would be nice Although if things turn out how I think they will, while we might end up with the human/alien of our dreams, we might not have much of a home left to settle down to (on Earth at least). After all, who doesn't like a happy ending?

Funny story. I'm an American--who was in the Army. While in the Army I was stationed in Germany (among other places). In Germany, I found myself dating a wonderful German woman. In order to learn German, I'd watch German crime shows (specifically one called Tatort).

So one night, I was watching Tatort with my girlfriend. On regular German TV, not too late in the evening. And there was this couple who'd had sex and it was the next morning. The couple was in bed and I already knew I was no longer in America...because there was no "L-shaped sheet." In many American shows the couple in bed, the sheet goes up to the fellow's waist, but completely covers her chest. This show? Not so much. Both he and she had their chests exposed. That was surprising on network TV. Then the phone rang in the show and the guy gets out of bed and walks across the room to answer it. In an American show, he'd inexplicably be wearing boxers (after having sex)--but in this German show is was full frontal male nudity. My German girlfriend laughed at my American prudishness.

I got over it.

But American TV/film is waaaay less graphic than European TV/Film when it comes to nudity/sex. On the other hand, we are waaay more graphic when it comes to violence.

I think it was Schwarzenegger who said that in American media you are more likely to see a breast cut off than caressed--and the thinks that's not okay.

Well that'll all depend on how we play ME3.

I just need to decide which character I will play through with first. My first character, although not named after me like my newest, basically made decisions that I would have made if I were there and ending up being 75-25 in favor of Paragon. My second took the completely opposite approach in almost every aspect (including being a lady), being mostly Renegade. And my 3rd, now named after me, is going almost completely Paragon.

I still haven't played through any of the DLC with any of them though. That's what I plan on doing over the summer

Actually that kind of nudity doesn't really bother me, it adds to the narrative, it's nudity for nudities sake that's annoying.

So I've been watching some new TV lately and I've noticed there seems to be a lot of sex scenes and/or nudity in TV then I remember. I've got no problem with sex, or nudity really, on a moral level.

What you describe is badly written sex. The more sex and nudity on TV, the better written at least some of it will become. If only because some people will feel like writing it well to counterbalance the badly written stuff.

I haven't noticed any more nudity on TV than usual, in America anyway.
Sure there's lots of talk about sex and maybe a sideboob or some underwear, but I've rarely seen fully uncovered boobs, dongs and the like outside of late night cable broadcasts.

I just need to decide which character I will play through with first. My first character, although not named after me like my newest, basically made decisions that I would have made if I were there and ending up being 75-25 in favor of Paragon. My second took the completely opposite approach in almost every aspect (including being a lady), being mostly Renegade. And my 3rd, now named after me, is going almost completely Paragon.

I still haven't played through any of the DLC with any of them though. That's what I plan on doing over the summer

Me and my friend are sharing a copy on Steam, I'm always full paragon and he's always full renegade. Renegade Shepard is funny as hell to watch, since most of the time he's just a douche-bag for the sake of being a douche-bag. Like when he extorts a shop owner into giving him a discount, then refuses to shop at the store anyway. Or head-butts a Krogan. XD

It's kinda cool seeing how different the game plays out. (Though I usually threaten to hurt him whenever he's mean to Tali.)

So I've been watching some new TV lately and I've noticed there seems to be a lot of sex scenes and/or nudity in TV then I remember. I've got no problem with sex, or nudity really, on a moral level.

But it seems to be getting a little bloody ridicules, and frankly annoying. If I want boobs I'll google them, if I want sex I'll find a site, when I watch a TV show or a Movie I want the story, and often, the sex doesn't add anything to the actual plot of what I'm watching.

Example I tried watching True Blood, something my sisters and mother really enjoy, and after the few episodes I just got sick of it, it was soft core porn, every bloody episode seemed to have at least two sex scenes or some bints tits hanging out.

What are your thoughts?

Hey, hands off our Australian TV! There's bloody nothing wrong with it. I don't want it to be like America where you can see snuff during children's TV hour but you can't see an exposed nipple even at 3am. If you're annoyed by boobies on TV then I suggest you move countries, stop watching TV or learn how to be less annoyed at life in general because if boobs annoy you then you're probably very easily annoyed.

It doesn't offend but it also doesn't make me want to watch the show on the fact it has nudity alone.It all boils down to the fact that sex sells so its just going to get even more prevalent as time goes on.
