I played the original Tribes a lot back in the day and I loved it, and played the beta for Ascend, whilst the gameplay was good, having to boot from that piece of crap Hi-Command DRM, and having extra paid content ruined it for me. I think that the game has no future as these 'free to play' or as I like to call them; 'pay to win' games rarely last long as they are prone to imbalance which makes them inaccessible to the 'free' playerbase. Call me a cynic, maybe I'm just disappointed with the way one of my favorite childhood games turned out.

Alright, you're being a cynic. The launcher is no different than those used in countless singleplayer experience, I don't see how that's a problem. And fortunately the pay model being used for Ascend is pretty good! The starting weapons and tools are all useful and competitive while any further upgrades are all accessible via in-game experience. True to unlock everything via pure gameplay would take bloody forever, but if there's one or two class you enjoy playing you can have everything unlocked for both quickly enough and without hassle.

You can't buy skill after all, no matter what weapon a player is using or how much money they've spent if someone sucks at the game they're still no match for a talented player using just the default classes. Unlocking new weapons and tools either via xp or gold gives more options, but doesn't ensure victory. Not right now at least, obviously I can't see into the future. But for now it's a good model. I like it!

I do wish the costs for gold were a bit lower, right now it's a bit high for my tastes. I also wish there were some bigger maps that encouraged more vehicle use, ala original Tribes. But beyond that I've few serious problems with the game. It's why I'm happy to recommend the game to others and support the developers.

I would hardly call Tribes: Ascend pay to win. For one, all the classes, weapons, and upgrades can be unlocked for free, with enough experience (and classes don't take long to unlock at all). Plus, none of the unlockable stuff is significantly "better" than the default weapons, and player skill is always the most significant factor.

As far as free to play games go, Tribes: Ascend is really reasonable, and still very enjoyable if you don't pay anything (like me).

Dammit, why didn't I think of creating a thread with my referral link!?
I've been playing since the beta, so you get no XP from me! But yeah, it is great fun, and I only recently started playing it again. I actually stopped way back when they added the arena mode. Enjoying the addition of capture and hold, but what happened to the rabbit mode?

Oh, and that second link still works guys, if you're wondering.

Not that many people were playing it unfortunately, although it'll apparently be one of the options for a custom game soon enough so it hasn't completely vanished.

Yeah it was sadly empty back in beta. Still, removing it entirely seems weird. Also, question. When was it officially released? Because I thought it was released a long time ago, back when arena mode was added, and coincidentally when I stopped playing (all those fresh players to kill and I missed it). But everyone seems to be talking about it lately, did they push the launch back?

Off topic: Finally have the new captchas, they're legible!

I'm starting to get a hang of fucking up there generator with the Infiltrator class, I'm still quite rusty when it comes to shooting. I have an excuse that this my first time playing games with my PC so used to console controls.

Been playing for a few days now, and I will be reviewing it probably sometime next week. It's somehow managed to hit this great intersection of being nostalgic and yet also feeling fresh. Basically nothing else plays like Tribes, and it would be noteworthy if for nothing else.

I'm currently a huge fan of the Infiltrator. I just love sneaking around disrupting, setting traps and backstabbing, but I've still pulled more than my fair share of flag captures off, especially if the defenses are really stacked as I can get close enough to see the best route to come in.
That's who I want to buy next but he's like 14k, and I just blew all my money on the sniper (which is a really bad class).

I'd enjoy it more if I didn't suck so much at it. Also I feel like a fool for investing in the sentinel, the sniper rifles are weaksauce.

Playing the tech is the only way I feel useful in that game.

EDIT: Oh, go by "Gildedyak" in game.

I would like to mention that Sentinel is one of the most important classes in the game. The class has one of the highest skill requirements, but has one of the highest payoffs. A Sentinel is the best for killing the enemy flag carrier, seeing as most are light-weights, so two shots and they're down if they have full health. Most of the time, they don't so it's a single shot, and you can help get your flag recovered.

You need an average system to play it, for me I have an x6,8GB of RAM and a 5750 and I play it on medium at 60 FPS constant. Hi Rez needs to do a better job of optimizing.

As for me I've played it a bit, love going fast and need to go faster, but I find that if you want to win, just join Blood Eagle, because no one wants to play as sandraker scum.

Doing damage to yourself for the sake of speed is one of the norms for a pathfinder. If you're playing as a pathfinder

For any help anyone might need on Tribes, I'd recommend the DoubleCrossedGaming channel on Youtube. They have a guide for every class, and even pathfinder routes on some maps.

Also, if you want to see some amazing Tribes game-play check out

I have same graphics card as you, that makes you awesome. I have Phenom X2 555 and 4GB RAM, and I can run it on the top settings, I'm not sure what FPS though. I can't say I've experienced any lag, super smooth.

I really ought to try and bring up the graphics, I know I can handle it but eh I want it to not lose any FPS during heavy firefights, which never happens :3

Plus when you are going 200+ sanics and framerate dip can kill my flag route.

Thumper is one of the most powerful weapons in the game TBH, though save up and get the Spinfusor(forget the Eagle pistol).

If you want a wealth of information, head to 4chans /vg/ board and hop into a Tribes general thread. There you will learn whats good, what sucks, what loadouts are trollicious and ways to go fast(which is the most important thing)

Worth noting for all: he (WoW Killer) was referring to the soldier's thumper, which is essentially a gimped light spinfusor except it's a medium's secondary. Not the tech thumper, which is essentially a gimped version of the soldier's spinfusor, and is a far scarier weapon. Regardless of what you think of the soldier, "one of the most powerful weapons in the game" his thumper is not.

Running spinfusor-thumper is a very silly loadout, though I can't blame someone for not wanting to use the eagle. Turrible damage falloff on that thing.

Free to play games don't tend to last? You mean like League of Legends? Or Team Fortress 2? Free to play is a model that's seeing overwhelming success today. And I can tell you firsthand that I've run into Brutes, Raiders, you name it, tricked out with all kinds of gear totally foreign to me. My Thumper doesn't seem to give a shit.

I've been really trying to master the Pathfinder, but it's going to come down to memorizing some tracks. I either do really well, or I get fed up and switch to Soldier.

The only glaring complaint I have (aside from lack of voice chat) is the vehicles seem pretty underwhelming. I tried the tank once and got really annoyed at slow it is to aim. They seem really easy to take down too, but maybe I'm playing with noobs.

You're kidding right?

The thumper is the same for the tech as it is the soldier, also giving up the advanced repair tool as a tech, WTF are you doing?

The thumper/fusor combo is great for me, also the damage falloff is not really something to worry about since I only use it for close quarters to get maximum splash damage on opponents.

Also I don't really appreciate being talked down to like I have no clue what I'm talking about.

Try them out in practice. Or just read the descriptions of them.

Soldier thumper does 770 damage, same as a pathfinder's light spinfusor. Tech thumper does 910 damage, same as a soldier's spinfusor.

Also, I never mentioned giving up the advanced repair tool for the tech...

EDIT: And splash weapons don't have damage falloff.

EDIT2: Here. Comparison of direct hits from the two thumpers.

Soldier:

Tech:

I must have missed something along the way, my mistake :V

But eh I don't see the tech needing the thumper really, the smg does okay damage and the tech should be worried about other things around the base, not out playing soldier.
