Thumper, underpowered
Lol

Thumper is one of the most powerful weapons in the game TBH, though save up and get the Spinfusor(forget the Eagle pistol).

If you want a wealth of information, head to 4chans /vg/ board and hop into a Tribes general thread. There you will learn whats good, what sucks, what loadouts are trollicious and ways to go fast(which is the most important thing)
Worth noting for all: he (WoW Killer) was referring to the soldier's thumper, which is essentially a gimped light spinfusor except it's a medium's secondary. Not the tech thumper, which is essentially a gimped version of the soldier's spinfusor, and is a far scarier weapon. Regardless of what you think of the soldier, "one of the most powerful weapons in the game" his thumper is not.

Running spinfusor-thumper is a very silly loadout, though I can't blame someone for not wanting to use the eagle. Turrible damage falloff on that thing.
You're kidding right?

The thumper is the same for the tech as it is the soldier, also giving up the advanced repair tool as a tech, WTF are you doing?

The thumper/fusor combo is great for me, also the damage falloff is not really something to worry about since I only use it for close quarters to get maximum splash damage on opponents.
Try them out in practice. Or just read the descriptions of them.

Soldier thumper does 770 damage, same as a pathfinder's light spinfusor. Tech thumper does 910 damage, same as a soldier's spinfusor.

Also, I never mentioned giving up the advanced repair tool for the tech...

EDIT: And splash weapons don't have damage falloff.

EDIT2: Here. Comparison of direct hits from the two thumpers.
I must have missed something along the way, my mistake :V

But eh I don't see the tech needing the thumper really, the smg does okay damage and the tech should be worried about other things around the base, not out playing soldier.
It would be wise not to challenge The Crotch's Tribes knowledge again, some say he's a genetically engineered superbeing capable of blowing a mere mortals mind using his mind. Bow down to The Crotch and his tactical wisdom.

That was somewhat off topic, I apologise.

This may seem a silly question, but: I was playing in the beta - do I need to re-download the game or can I just keep playing from the version already installed on my computer?

Tribes is a subtle pay-to-win FPS using nostalgia and a dry market to springboard its name.

At current, it would take years to earn all of the guns and enhancements using the VIP method (100,000 XP per gun, x 8 for number of classes, and that's just the guns, there's millions of XP to be earned for the unlocks, and you only get about 1000 per 20 minute match. Considering the average gamer would only get around 3-4 matches in every other day, that would mean it takes OVER 3 years of bi-daily gameplay to unlock everything)

It also doesn't help that almost half of the core concepts in Tribes (flag chasing, team gameplay, base defence) are rendered null by these new weapons that break the gameplay off from the original Tribes feeling.

Let's face it, this is Tribes Fortress Modern Warfare 2: Ascend. Many of the guns are even a direct ripoff of TF2, and the Thumper/Sentinel is an obvious Call of Duty fanboy pleaser.

I can't get used to the Spinfuser now that I've been using the Thumper, gah. And you know what else? I'm starting to like the Rifle more and more. I think I'm going to stick with the default loadout after all. On that earlier comment, I understand the Rifle/Thumper can be effective in the right hands, it just seems that each is among the weakest of their own family of weapons; there are better impact explosives and much better automatics. Regardless it's the combination that works well on the Soldier. Though I guess it'd be nice if they switched the places of the two so you could roll with SF/AR or something (on the other hand there wouldn't be much of a call for using Thumper over Spinfuser or Pistol over Rifle in that case).

So if I'm mainly happy with the weapons (I've got both mastered now; that last upgrade for the Rifle is a bigger change than I was expecting!), then I can aim to save up for the Utility Pack. I'm tempted to get one perk first though. I'm happy enough with the default primary, as nothing else seems that game-changing (Reach could be ok, maybe? Though I shouldn't be handling the flag all that often), but some of the secondary perks seem very nice (I rarely get any use from Determination). If I'm using Thumper rather than the Spinfuser for mobility, then is Egocentric going to be as important, given that the Thumper doesn't do all that much damage? Also, what are your thoughts on Quick Draw for a Soldier?

but what happened to the rabbit mode?
Not that many people were playing it unfortunately, although it'll apparently be one of the options for a custom game soon enough so it hasn't completely vanished.
Yeah it was sadly empty back in beta. Still, removing it entirely seems weird. Also, question. When was it officially released? Because I thought it was released a long time ago, back when arena mode was added, and coincidentally when I stopped playing (all those fresh players to kill and I missed it). But everyone seems to be talking about it lately, did they push the launch back?

Off topic: Finally have the new captchas, they're legible!
Just a heads up Rabbit is still available in Custom servers so if you search through those or filter for Rabbit you should be able to find a game.

I think you should be able to keep playing since I think the game downloads through the launcher, so I think you'll just get a patch notification.

Whats the problem? My friend made an account and it took like 2 minutes since it requires no activation.
Oh, well I was having password trouble with my ncsoft account, it has since been fixed and I'm messing around on it at least until the grind comes back.

<--- Raider main, with Technician/Juggernaut (and a bit soldier) as secondaries. Got all of these to ~50% unlocks.

Yeah, I really like indoor combat more than outdoor chasing, probably a result of me being horrible with automatics and spinfusers. On maps where that's not an option(cough raindance) I'll just switch to juggernaut and stand back while shelling the flag platform, which gives me lots of delicious artillery accolades.
Also it's hilarious to set up aggressive turrets on maps you don't need the defensive ones.

Add me ingame if you want someone to play with, it's Naeras there as well. =)

I played the original Tribes a lot back in the day and I loved it, and played the beta for Ascend, whilst the gameplay was good, having to boot from that piece of crap Hi-Command DRM, and having extra paid content ruined it for me. I think that the game has no future as these 'free to play' or as I like to call them; 'pay to win' games rarely last long as they are prone to imbalance which makes them inaccessible to the 'free' playerbase. Call me a cynic, maybe I'm just disappointed with the way one of my favorite childhood games turned out.
It's not anywhere close to being a pay-to-win-game. It's a "pay-to-get-sidegrades-slightly-faster"-game, as very few of the unlockable weapons are hands-down better than the ones you start with, and armor upgrades and such can be acquired within a few hours of playing. Also, saying free-to-play means the game won't last is bollocks, just look at League of Legends.

The only real weakness I see with this model is the fact that you'll have less flexibility in the roles you'll be able to play, meaning that putting all your points into a niche loadout can cripple you if that specific loadout gets marginalized that game.

Ya lol me too, but I'm getting there. I was getting decent scores than I hit 7 or 8 and started getting paired with people with gold badges and I went back to the bottom of the scoreboard.

In just two days of reasonable playing time I'm at 20,000 XP, halfway to most guns, or with almost enough to buy two classes (infiltrator and tech sound fun!). I think I'm going to get the classes I want first, then buy a few upgrades for the weapons I already have. I think the model is very reasonable - weapons are way more expensive than they should be, but I've been watching videos from people way more skilled than me, and it seems like the weapons are very well balanced. Except you seem to start off with some pretty shit 'nades. I haven't had any trouble taking down people with more gear than me.

The thing that seems to marginally improve a class are the perks, which are priced so that they take 2-3 games to earn enough XP for.

Ya it doesn't seem to take very long to get decent equipment in the game, mostly, because the game starts you off with a half decent kit. That being said some of the guns are really pricey. I want the jackal for the infiltrator, and I got like 40k right now, but when I think about it for the price of the jackal I could unlock 2 of the more expensive classes and fully upgrade 2-3 perks.

Cheers. I played some yesterday and I didn't need to redownload. However, I seem to have kept my levels and unlocks which, while I'm only level 7, seems a little unfair to people who didn't play beta.

Um.

How is it unfair? You played, you got the EXP. They didn't. They can still play and get the EXP...

Hmmm...apparently my quote got eaten first time, so again: cheers. Had no problems playing on the version I already have.

I just assumed after beta everyone would start on a level playing field. Having players with higher levels, better weapons, and better perks at launch puts other players at a disadvantage.

1: Nature of any game with EXP and unlockable equipment. You can not avoid that. People who play more get more, and it's not like they couldn't have played during the open beta (which had been going on for a while) or even the closed beta (which had many, many keys if you knew where to look). So why take away the progress of people who have been playing for months? Especially if they've paid money...

2: Low-level players have their own segregated servers. They don't last long, but they exist. Wish the game did a better job of it, though. Maybe 1-5, 6-11, 12-50.

I think you guys also got a special vet badge either if you played at all or played and hit some level. Still I can't really complain I had a couple closed beta keys and decided/didn't have time to use them, so no one to blame but myself.

A badge and 10,000 EXP if you were at level 10 on release. 15,000 if you were a VIP (had spent any amount of money on the game), 20,000 if you had an EXP boost running, and 30,000 if you had VIP and an active boost.

I've still got craploads of stuff to unlock, but I'm sitting on my EXP until the doombringer gets some new toys. I figure the brute'll get a class pack next week and the doombie will get new gear in late May; if any other classes get new stuff before those two, I will be a sad heavy. Good-golly-Miss-Molly do I wish I could switch out this saber for anything else.

EDIT: And if you played the game substantially before February, you should have a ton of EXP. Pre-February-patch, the game was way different (read: way worse), and some of the many changes made resulted in a huge influx of EXP for old players. Shame I hadn't really played before then (srsly, the game was pretty weak before the February patch), but... eh. I shall survive.
