Piracy is a good thing. This has been endlessly proven time and again since the Napster blow up.

The reason Ubisoft is having problems is because its a typical greedy corporation with an archaic way of thinking. They have simply refused to adjust to the changes in the market. When you add something like DRM into your game, the ONLY thing it does is negatively effect paying customers. It doesn't prevent the game from being hacked.

1. Negatively effect paying customer.
2. Not prevent hacking at all.
3. Spend money to accomplish this.
4. Complain when more people refuse to buy your game because of DRM.

Or you can do like some other developers. Lets go with Bathesda and Skyrim.

1. Make a good game worthy of being bought.
2. Not fudge it up with face slapping DRM.
3. Brag about how many millions of copies you sold.

Heres an article about independent developers embracing piracy. Something that is happening more and more.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/118/1184550p1.html

Hey look heres another one.
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1121596044/how-piracy-works

Heres an article about the ten most illegally downloaded movies and how much money they made.
http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-pirated-movies-of-all-time-111012/

Heres a youtube video of a musician supporting piracy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCkX0KcNwrI

With that last link, you might say, wait a sec, music is suffering the most from piracy. Wrong.

Two points about music specifically.
1. Digital songs. What this means is that instead of gambling on a full cd for 20 bucks like you used to, we can now only buy the few songs that we actually like. This is a good thing for the consumer, but obviously bad for the corporations, but ONLY the corporations. Musicians have never made much money from song sales, its always been through ticket sales. Which is why piracy is good for them.

Piracy = more awareness = more fans = more ticket sales.

2. Over saturation. Name a form of entertainment that isn't filled to the rim with music these days. TV, movies, infinite radio stations, entire games made just about music. Why would people continue to want to buy music as much when they are endlessly bombarded by it everywhere.

1. Studios ignorantly assume piracy is bad.
2. Overreact to this ignorant assumption and spend money to saturate the music thinking it will increase sales.
3. Obviously has the opposite effect.
4. Complain afterwards and continue to blame piracy.
5. Spend hundreds of millions of dollars to fight piracy.

We are moving into the digital age. The only way the artist will survive is by embracing the move. This includes embracing piracy. At the end of the day, if you make a good product, and people can afford it, and think its worth their very hard earned money, more then enough people will pay for it.

Embrace the future or don't. It's up to you. But don't complain to those who do when you get left behind.

First off, I defy any PC gamer to say they haven't pirated a game before....seriously. It's rife on PC

Secondly, to people bitching about Ubisofts DRM. I think always online DRM is a good thing and heres why:
They want to know that the copy of, say, Assassins Creed you are playing is a legit copy. The old CD key tactic is pretty much useless due to the sheer amount of Keygens floating about the web. Therefore, always online DRM allows them to check that the copy you are playing is legal.
If you made a game that cost a tonne to develop you would want to make sure no one pirated it, right? Well thats what Ubisoft are doing...
You know, except for the fact that the DRM gets cracked within days(sometimes instantly) for games. So when the game is released, the pirates will have a better quality game than the people who actually bought it.

Two neighbors get a ubisoft game. One pays for it, one pirates it. One day, something happens that deprives them of internet connection (maybe a storm or they're using their laptops for entertainment in a place without wifi). Which one has the better game version?
If DRM is hacked that easily (I didn't know with me not being a PC gamer) then I'm surprised more developers haven't jumped ship

As for your question, they both have the same game version...just one wasn't paid for. I'm guessing most PC gamers have a backup plan for when they aren't online so playing something else shouldn't really be a problem. I play Halo online and when my connection drops I play GTAIV instead.

PC piracy is too much of a problem now and its gonna be nigh on impossible to stop

As I said, pirates have essentially robbed PC of Ubisoft
Incorrect. The pirate has a copy that works while the internet is down. That's the point of the crack.

And no, Ubisoft robbed PC of Ubisoft. I would have bought AC2, From Dust, Maybe even Ghost Recon, but I won't because Ubisoft are going out of their way to piss me off.

Also, if piracy was such a problem that it wasn't worth developing for PC, then GOG wouldn't exist. End of. But it does. So...

Hopefully. At least they'd stop making themselves look so bad.

Man, it must be hard to be PC elitist when 3 games come out for it every year.
Oh it's not that bad. I think us PC gamers are counting our blessings we aren't in the same boat as Xbox 360 which has only had Gears of War 3 as its single note-worthy exclusive. Wii also having JUST Skyward Sword this year. And what are PC gamers missing out on, of yeah that shooter they try to sell with the kinect gimmick...

PC has had this year in terms of exclusives:
-Hard Reset
-Shogun 2
-Red Orchestra 2
-Minecraft
-EYE
-Terraria
-Magicka
-Torchlight 2
-Haunted: Hell's Reach
-SW: Old Republic
-DOTA 2
Exclusive for now:
-Serious Sam 3 (still no date for console version, not even box-art)
-Witcher 2

And I still have Portal 2, Arkham City, BF3, MW3, Bastion, Deus Ex: human Revolution, Skyrim, WH40k Space Marine, Saints Row the Third and RAGE to play on my PC in 1080p native resolution, 60-frame/sec and with mouse aim.

I'll tell you it's a hard life being a PC gamer, I just have WAY too many games to play. I don't know where I'll ever find the time! So much goodness. This Ubisoft tantrum is a like that stuck up annoying asshole saying he's not coming to our party when he always outstayed his welcome anyway.

(PS: for my PS3 + 360 I have Gears 3, Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3 and (combo breaker) Infamous 2 as the only console games worth playing this year. They're nice DVD players though.)

Does this constant blaming of PC Gamers kind of remind people of the olden days of screaming, "Witch" while bringing out some poor innocent soul to go roast on a stick because someone got the sniffles?
Nope, nor does it remind me of Nazi Germany, McCarthy era USA, the White Australia Policy, the Great Leap Forward, Stalin's Purges, The Crusades, various South and Central American Death Squads, Apartheid South Africa, the Atlantic Slave Trade, Internment Era Northern Ireland, or when Spock died.

It's just some company acting like a sack of cocks.
Admit it. It's a little bit like when Spock died.
Only if you've got the version where Kirk yells "I FUCKED YOUR MUM!" as Spock breaths his last.

Hey, I'm a PC gamer and I have NEVER pirated a single game.

Ever.

Not a single game.

Your weasel words are as bad as that thing those right-wing shock-jocks say:
"well I don't know how easy it is to make a suicide bomber's belt... I'm not a muslim"

I'm not sure if any have even been insensitive enough to say that but the principal of implication is the same.

NOT ALL PC GAMERS ARE PIRATES!

You are using a PC right now, you are just as capable of pirating as me. Yet because I ACTUALLY BUY PC GAMES that somehow marks me out as a pirate?!?!?

Developers will NEVER be safe from pirates. Even if every developer moves to consoles, it's not like consoles can't be hacked. A good percent of the pirates will just move on to consoles. Making draconian DLC that only hurts the people that buy your game is a great way to get more pirates.

Besides, it's not like pirates make PC gaming unprofitable. If they did, valve, blizzard, and even mojang wouldn't exist.

And they don't have the same version. One has DRM that makes it worse for them if they don't have internet, and one doesn't. Besides, isn't it frustrating when you get a new release you're been waiting for for years, but then getting home and figuring out you can't play it because you don't have internet access all the time?

Pretend there's an MMO where a raid boss is invincible to normal attacks, and whenever you attack him he just releases a massive burst of fire that hurts everyone in the raid. You can't beat this boss directly, and you need to think of another way to finish him off, but your raid leader just keeps charging in headfirst with a massive hammer. Everyone keeps trying to tell the raid leader to stop, but he won't for whatever stupid reason. The boss isn't taking any damage, but the raid is.

Then, when the raid leader gets low on HP, he whines to the other raiders that they suck, and leaves.

Someone earlier in the post gave me a link saying that Ubisoft's pc sales dropped drastically after the DRM. If that's true, then this analogy is perfect.

Dear Ubisoft,

we (PC users) are not complaining about you protecting your rights to your intellectual property with DRM.

what we do complain about is over-the-top protections of the sort where if your internet drops out you get taken back to the main menu.

oh and btw Ubisoft, I have cancelled my pre-order for Assasins Creed Revelations - you know the most expensive one?

Dont let a few bad apples spoil it for the VAST MAJORITY of legit law abiding PC users.

kind regards,

Anyone remember the opening BIOS screen from the PlayStation:
Piracy harms consumers as well as developers

Well thats been proven correct I reckon

Piracy as well as PC gamers bitching about Ubisofts apparently disgusting protection of its games has just lost the PC a developer

Give yourselves a hearty pat on the back
I'm a PC gamer who is constantly preaching to people not to pirate games even IF they're simply doing it to see if they enjoy it. Games are a luxury not a privilege and I have never pirated a game. I'm quite affronted by your opening comment.

Well, considering that all their other Ghost Recon games control like ass, I suppose I should thank ubisoft for saving me the trouble of rejecting it outright.

Losing a scum bag developer such as them is an honor, look at Skyrim which is a single player game, there are are more than 280 thousand PC users on steam playing it. Why? because Bethesda knows how to treat PC gamers. Same goes for Valve.

I never bought a single Ubisoft game despite wanting Settlers 7 thanks to their DRM....eventually I tried it at a cyber cafe which has pirated games. Didnt leave a good impression so their games are generally bad.

They've had about 3 games that I'm even remotely intersted in released in the last 5 years. Them not programming for PC anymore really isn't a loss. If anything its a gain for all the other developers who do program for PC and have morals.

Ubi? I have never pirated one of your games. There are three on my shelf right now. But if you don't feel a need to acknowledge my existence, we can certainly make that a mutual arrangement.

So now consoles get "complete" games and PC's get free to play games where they can probably purchase stupid things and special maps while they look at advertising? Duty of Duty: Farmville? Man, that blows.

If I played anything other than vintage PC games I'd be pissed. Since I play consoles for anything newer than 2000 it doesn't bother me that much. As a business man, I am a little weirded out by a company willingly hacking off an entire market segment. Ports can be done cheap, more money is always good, the corporation's goal is supposed to be increased profits.

Seems... dumb. Really, really dumb.

I remember that from when I was like, 8 or 10, and I thought they meant these kinds of pirates:

It was years before I learned they meant "people who make illegal copies" which as thieving goes is pretty fucking far down on the chain of wrongness in stealing, I think it is above stealing a loaf of bread to feed your starving family (edit) but well below even shoplifting or failing to turn in a lost piece of property you found. Yet they are given the same label as Pirates who were notorious for their extreme violence and savagery in stealing such wealth and directly destroying lives.

I'm not saying Piracy is all right, it IS thievery. But me thinks that the industry is over-reacting a bit, and that calling people that make unfair copies of things as pirates... it kinda destroys any confidence in their moralising by hyperbole. And they seem to really believe this hyperbole, going as far as holding it as reason to completely give up and be utter whiny cunts about it. But it was not like Ubisoft were particularly committed to PC, with most of their games being "console-simple" ported to PC lazily spending more time and effort with the DRM than anything else.

I don't get it. Ubisoft's constant-online DRM while annoying overkill really does seem to have made it "unpiratable" yet sales still sucked. Maybe because Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is shit that the PC Gaming market hardly gives a shit about, and especially when it treats them like criminals. Now Witcher 2, that was a bigger Success with no DRM when it was in many ways similar to AC:Brotherhood in terms of setting and theme but not gameplay or scope.

Was there any buzz amongst PC gamers for Ghost Recon Future Soldier? It's a bunch of glowing holographic crap! That's the type of shit that idiots find impressive and not in the TF2 kind of idiotic, but kind of "oooh, shiny lights" idiot.

Piracy (for want of a better term) has been rampant on PSP and DS. Same with the original playstation and it seems for single-player games piracy is rampant on 360 now.
