That sounds about right. Militant atheists are renowned for having no sense of humour about their un-beliefs and are notoriously keen to get in other people's faces about it. Which is rather ironic, given how much they like to slag off at religion for doing the same thing.

If someone wants to put Jedi down as their religion, more power to them. About time people stopped taking this stuff so seriously.

What part of "'No Religion' checkbox" do you not understand?

"Atheism" is no more a religion than is "Not believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny."

... Atheism is not a religion. It is simply the lack of a belief in a theistic god. Most agnostics are really atheists when you get right down to it. The problem is not the Atheists themselves but rather the hate that was put into the word.

It's been said before and I'll say it this time, if atheism is a religion then not collecting stamps is a hobby.

If you don't believe in god you're an atheist. It's not a group, think of it more like not believing in communism. Not all people who don't believe in communism have the same beliefs and not all atheists do either. There is a group of atheists that are creationists, except they believe the aliens put us here.

Also, the human race is full of stupid people, does that mean you don't classify yourself as Homo Sapien?

Will they file that under 'other'?
HERESY! You must obviously write the God-Emperor of Mankind or suffer for your transgressions against the Imperium!

Ah, the anti-religious zealots are becoming as bad as the religious ones!

The next thing we know and they'll be knocking on our doors and asking us if we were just having a laugh when we wrote "Jedi" on that census form. Basically, when I filled out the form all those years ago, I really hadn't got time for religion. Some things never change and as I feel that it causes much more suffering in the world than those atheist types (I called on God to smite me in a Religious Education Class about 15 years ago and he still hasn't), I'm still leaning towards agnostic.

Sure, I've learned a new word between censuses and I might consider writing agnostic, as opposed to "no religion", because it gets on the nerves of more people. I might just put Jedi, because it gets on the nerves of those people that actually seem to care, since there's nothing more ambiguous than writing "I have no religion", rather than saying "I have no religion, as I have seen no proof. If I do happen to see proof, my beliefs may be subject to change"

Heated arguments on my doorstep with Jehovah's Witnesses will stand testament to my belief that the Bible is fictional - I might as well wander around worshipping Gandalf the White, for he is the born again saviour of Middle Earth, which obviously has no parallels drawn to it :p

You might as well decide to ask me to explain my political views in a short sentence on these things - It won't work. There are guidelines for filling in this form and then there are people that try to tell us how to fill them in. I get to choose what I write personally and it will take a stronger willed group of individuals than these atheists to convince me to join them.

I'm not a Jedi, I wrote those four letters on the form last time for a laugh. Two fingers up at the establishment seemed like a fun idea at the time, but now I've got to consider if I really want to say I'm a part of the 4th biggest religion in the UK. I might as well just put "pastafarian", to get the Flying Spaghetti Monster some publicity.

There is no name for not collecting stamps. So why do I have to have a name and be assosciated with specific people for not believing in God?

It's ridiculous to say that people shouldn't self-identify as a particular religion unless they reach some standard of devoutness. It seems almost reasonable when we apply it to stuff that seems like a joke like the Church of Jediism, but if we apply it to a more privileged religion like Christianity, it gets ugly. People wouldn't accept being told that they can't identify as Christian unless they can show that they REALLY, TRULY BELIEVE, instead of just like to go to church on weekends. It would be offensive if a private organization ran a campaign like that; it would be a significant step toward religious hegemony if the actual government decided to require a standard of devoutness for census responses.
This is the most intelligent comment on religion I have ever read.

Also (from the 80's): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRwXrcz-F9M

Yes to the vast majority of people, being catholic, anglican, evangelist, muslim, hindu, etc, is more a matter of showing off that they have a religion and therefore some "moral standards", but they dont believe in it. Jedi is a very well played joke, makes me cringe, but it is.

You don't I was just pointing something out. You don't have to be associated with anyone, but calling your self an atheist does not automatically lump you in with all the other atheists. The word came about because it was important for people to get across that they do not buy into religion.

You don't have to call yourself anything, hell I find it great that some people don't want to label themselves. I choose to call myself an atheist because I feel strongly about the subject, you're not a theist but you don't choose to call yourself an atheist and I'm cool with that. Just don't call atheism a religion.

1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

Atheism is not a set of beliefs, but a lack of a belief in a single proposition, thus it can not be described as a religion.

TLDR:
Feel free to call yourself what you want, it's your right, but don't call atheism a religion.

read the article again, also read this:

"The data gathered is used to inform government policy, and was used by the last government to justify funding of religious community bodies over secular ones. For example, 2001 census data has been used repeatedly to justify an increase in the number of state maintained faith schools and the increasing level of government money spent on faith organisations.

By ticking 'No Religion', you will ensure that the Government receives an unambiguous message about the number of non-religious people in the UK. Any other response may be manipulated into a response in favour of religion and publically funded religious organisations."

source: http://www.yourenotajedi.com/
/facepalm

As I said to the other guy, the government, believe it or not, are actually intelligent enough to work out that people who put Jedi aren't particularly religious. They would not seriously point at the Jedi community as a reason to build religious places.

But what if I am of the opinion that all religions are fictional? I think that's what atheists think is true- so why is it so much of a bother to claim you're a part of one fictional group rather than another?

Also, I'm not causing another group of people to be under-represented because I say I'm a Jedi- They haven't built Jedi community centres instead of other denomination community centres or anything like that, so I don't see the issue.

It surely is identical to saying no religion whilst being slightly more hilarious.
