I love that they are giving players a chance to play both sides,
and I think more games (perhaps not the Taliban) should be played from both perspectives.
Say for example, a game where you play a German Soldier in WW2.
do you seriously think all of them were Nazis? Seriously? We are so offended by stereotypes, yet there isn't a single game where you play as a company of German soldiers who are only doing it because they don't want to betray their country.

I hate the goverment...serious.

I'm British (England,Blackpool) and it pisses me off how a amazing game might get shut down because of all the contraversial (spelling?) shit. If a game is about war and it's a 18/M, you expect some contraversy!

In all honesty, this had to have been expected. Games are an easy target to aim for to score some cheap political points as they're still seen, in the most part, as something played exclusively by teenagers. Very easy to sensationalise in the media.

Also;

"un-British"
What a twat. Seriously, what is the use of this phrase ever meant to achieve? Is it to cause some anxious hand-wringing response from the reader? Maybe to instill feelings of guilt and cause them to jump on the bandwagon, screaming 'I'm a patriot!' as they go?

So very very sick of it.

/Rant.

I think most of you are drastically over-reacting.

On the one hand:

1. In other games featuring Middle-Easter insurgent groups they are not explicitly named as Taliban. You guys need to distinguish between 'Someone wearing a rag on their head', and 'Terrorist

2. We're still at war with the Taliban. It's like releasing a WWII game in 1944.

3. Yes, more have been killed by the Nazis, however, that was a long time ago. Most people alive do not remember.

4. If people are retarded enough to copy gangsta culture off TV, and celebrate that guy who shot and blinded that policeman, then it's understandable to worry about how this will influence people.

On the other:

1. Freedom!

2. Freeeeeeeeeeedddoooooooooooooom!

3. Down with the government!

Personally I'm going to go down the middle road and ask them to re-name the enemy side to something less conspicuous.

In the meantime, lol:

Probably more fathers, husbands, and sons in history have been killed by the British than any other nation. Both sides are manned by people. People with lives and families. Stupid bastard.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if this was all some ploy by EA to get advertising without the need to advertise.Look at how they promoted Dante's Inferno. A quick apology later and no harm done.
I'd bet money the Taliban won't be an option when the game arrives they'll just re-name them Insurgents. They won't even need to fuck about re-coding.

I'm totally not surprised. I'm surprised that people here are surprised.

Let us not beat around the bush, it is a contreversial inclusion. I think "for the industry" it may be a good thing, overall. Pretty much all previous "provocative" or "contreversial" games have been along the lines of Manhunt or the likes, ie. brainlessly contreversial. This Medal of Honor game actually seems to be making a point. If they can stick to their guns and hold their own, hopefully some people will come over to the viewpoint that the medium a point is made in is not as important as the point.

Btw, are there any examples of films or books written about the War in Afghanistan from the Taliban perspective?

That said, I can understand why he might feel this way. Certainly games in the past have let you play as Nazis, invading Russians or generic terrorists from _____istan, this is the first time, as far as I know, that any game has let you play as members of an actual enemy force that the USA & Friends are actually fighting at the time of release. I expect (And bear in mind that I haven't quite done as much homework as I probably should to make a statement like this) that this game will take the typical approach of modern war games towards realism and in the end the Taliban will be interchangeable with Nazis, Russians, North Koreans, generic terrorists or anybody else that NATO doesn't like, so it really shouldn't be such a big deal. Perhaps Mr. Fox isn't as good at spotting obvious patterns in gaming as myself and is expecting a realistic portrayal of Taliban activity, likely including a level where you sever a child's legs for talking to a foreign soldier or something like that.

TL;DR I can see where the Defence Secretary is coming from here.

This, my friends, is why you shouldn't have voted Conservative.

Last time I checked America was not part of the UK.
The British armed forces are at war in Afghanistan alongside the US forces, if you somehow managed to avoid knowing that.

Never met or heard of anyone who describes things as un-British who has any right to internal organs.
Multi-player on WW2 games has often required players to play Nazis/Axis, and most of the world thinks (or at least gives me the impression that they think) that they were much worse than the Taliban, so I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

Well that's lovely. However, he's massively over-reacting. As everyone before me seems to have said. Damn Ninjas. :L
