Furthermore, I don't think "non-reported rapes" (which, by the way, occur globally. It's not a Japanese-only phenomenon) can account for something like 8-10x as many reported cases in the US as Japan gets.

There's only so much number skewing you can blame on culture. That the US has a higher rate than Japan at all says that these games are clearly not doing anything 'bad' en masse for the population in Japan.

I honestly don't see how these groups can try to make drawings/cartoons illegal, and that they actually are getting so much support.

Some of you out there honestly feel people should go to PRISON just because they drew or watched a picture/cartoon? I can see why the content of the cartoon may disagree with people's ideas of decency or morality, but arresting people for artwork, no matter the content, is just one step away from arresting people for THOUGHT CRIMES, since isn't a drawing merely the visual representation of what was in the drawer's mind?

The artist did not actually rape anyone, a person who draws an image of their A-hole boss being strung up in a noose did not commit murder, and a kid drawing a pot leaf did not really do drugs. There was NO crime committed, merely putting pen to paper.

And for those who say "Yes, ban the rape games, but our killing games are different because we're the good guys" are deluding yourselves. Carmageddon, Redneck Rampage, Postal, GTA, Fallout, Bioshock, and numerous other games not only give you the option, or the ability, to kill innocents, but some of these games actually promote that aspect, and many of these games are top sellers winning numerous awards.

Banning these games and cartoons will not get rid of them. Banning things NEVER works. Like one of the above posters pointed out we banned alcohol (Prohibition) and only succeeded in creating Al Capone and the other black market alcohol violent mafia tycoons. We make drugs illegal and only succeed in creating an ultra-violent black market underworld, in countries all over the world, who kill innocents daily in order to keep the product going. If cartoons or games are made illegal, the only effect will be to drive the product underground, making criminals a boat load of cash, and now because it's a crime they'll have to start defending their black market stuff with knives and guns, possibly hurting more people.

Like another poster above said, if I were Japan, I'd tell these UN and American groups, that "Yes, we'll ban our games, and our manga, and our anime....as soon as you can get America to ban their Soprano's style mafia shows, and their The Wire style gang shows, and their Weeds style drug glamorizing shows, and their Superbad style movies that glamorize underage drinking and sex.
