University Videogame Will Teach Girls to Say "No" to Sex

You CAN'T do this.

Not to say you SHOULDN'T discourage teen girls from getting knocked-up, but you can't do it this way. In fact, I don't know if any sort of propaganda aimed at kids like this has ever worked, ever.

The girls who want to have sex, will not be affected by this. The techniques described in here are probably nonviolent, which means guys who want to pressure girls into sex won't be fazed by them.

You want to teach girls how to refuse sex appropriately? Have them take self-defense. Or give them better role-models than Paris Hilton and Rosie O' Donnell; so the decision isn't about whether to be a whore or a lesbian fem-nazi.

What an age we live in now where gaming can take over for that petty annoyance that some of us considered 'Parenting'.
Parenting is for shmucks. Just take a look at the world around you and you'll notice how many people use "Parenting" when having a child. It's sad actually.

Someone's been reading too much Twilight. Anyway, what does it matter? I'm willing to bet they'll still go out and fuck anyway.

Hey, it's just the next step to actually making sense in blaming videogames for occuring crimes really. After all, if someone gets solicited into underage sex it won't be the parents' fault anymore, but this videogame's fault for not doing its job! Or it'll be the family's fault for not taking their kid to experience this videogame! No person ever needs to be blamed!

...eeghhh
Wow, so it's not like it's just replacing the necessity for a parental role in a child's life, it's also removing all possible blame for the child's eventual, messed up up-bringing.

The future is just looking so bright right now.
Yeah. A future with a bunch of domestic abuse cases just waiting to happen. A future with a fuckton of messed up offspring and inbred wastrels. And lest we not forget, A future where abstinence is preached.

Seriously, this is fucking bullshit.

I'm sure Little Timmy will understand that you couldn't spend $434,000 searching for a cure to his rare disease and instead spent it to make sure you didn't have to get into a simple 5 minute awkward conversation with your daughter at no cost, I mean that's a hard thing to go through with!

Let me state this. Sex when you're not ready is bad - I think most of the time, teenagers aren't emotionally prepared for it. But at the same time, to be punished by letting a female avatar accept any overture without regard to real-life context just REEKS of a patriarchal overvaluation of virginity and the fear of female sexuality. Why wasn't this game developed with male avatars too? Guys suffer from early sexualization and peer pressure just as much as girls - and yet, girls were singled out as needing "extra protection" or rather, it seems it was developed with a "boys will be boys and we don't need to focus on protecting them" attitude. This comes off as an implicit acceptance of male sexuality and condemnation of female sexuality.

Besides, it casts males as predators - this is an extremely unhealthy and terrible bias. I'm offended for the roles this game assigns to both genders.

It's exactly for that reason that I intend to be a very hand's on parent.
I'm going to ensure that if my child is learning something through a video-game, that at the very least I an be part of the experience and ensure he's aware of what lesson he's learning.

It's like I said in another response post on this thread, I learned most of what I know about morality and decency from early 90's cartoons and it's really a shame because I feel like I missed out on some seriously needed father-son lesson learning and bonding. Which of course I couldn't get from Bucky O'hare or Captain Planet.

Wow... this is just sad... There is this misconception that pre-teens/teenagers are to damn stupid to differentiate between a virtual world on their computer screen and real life. This is why video games are blamed for school shootings by morons like Jack Thompson and why someone had the god-awful idea that this would work

Another valid point, how can we expect the game to interpret a response to 'just saying no'?
In a game I wager it's just a case of refuse hard enough and frequently enough and they'll eventually back off, whereas in the real world you will more than likely come across the one person of many that will just shake off your constant refusal while just taking what they want anyway.

Stuff like this will only make people weaker in the face of peer pressure, because a pre-scripted game cannot faithfully recreate a situation that has no scripted control of itself.

Anyone learning their lessons from this will think this is how it works.
When it eventually comes to putting lessons into practice in a real situation they'll be overwhelmed and panic anyway.

I wish they looked into how much people actually took notice of these types of things.

I.e. Not at all.

Did they really have to waste tax-payer's money developing a game?
Couldn't they just have a PSA on television or something along those lines or, better yet, just let the parents explain things to their kids?

What if you do in fact say, "Yes."?
Also what if a male plays the game? Do we get to ask people and get rejected constantly?
