MicroSoft can't stop getting bad PR. These things that have been happening only spell Doom for M$.

On the bright side the Xbone controller works on PC.

And it just keeps getting worse for them. I wonder if someone had gotton on stage and nudged an exec, if they would fall over and reveal themselves to be a cardboard cutout with a linux installation disc taped to the back.

It seems there really is justice in the world.

I see no reason why he'd lie but we'll see.
Yeah, Cinemablend (the website Escapist links to) says that most games ran on devkits, and only one game (LocoCycle) was being run on a PC because it hadn't been fully ported yet. Now, curiously Cinemablend only mentions this in the comments for the article instead of actually editing the article, but hey.

Yeah, it was a bit suspicious, but this seems like an understandable explanation. Not sure why they chose to show off the game when it wasn't ported over yet, though.

This too, why/how are they playing on the PC with Nvidia hardware when the Xbone will be AMD hardware?
If history is anything to go by, the Xbox One will be making heavy use of Microsoft's Direct X API's so honestly, there's no reason those wouldn't run on both an Nvidia and an AMD card right now. Especially since there's probably very little optimization going on for Xbone hardware yet. until you get into those hardware specific optimizations, there's really no difference in the software that is run on either card.

this just seems stupid, i can forgive them for running on windows 7, but not even using the same hardware is, well misleading and misrepresentative of their final product, borderline colonial marines-ish. I do not think ill be buying a next gen console, definitely not at launch... and from the look of things if i do get around to buying one i would get a PS4.

Microsoft should pull out of the console race now, and instead make the xbox one a feature app of a windows 8 pc kind of like steam big picture. Microsoft does not seem to be prepared to ship a console especially when they don't even trust the hardware. As for the hearts and minds of consumers, lets face it things are not looking good for Microsoft, they are going to have to rely un-savy consumers. however while something like this won't even make mainstream news, I can only imagine that even un-savy consumers will be put off by the always online requirement, given that it wont be a hidden fact at retailers.

This information was published on friday or over the weekend, you're really slow to report this my dear magazine ;/
I think I'll stay with PC forever at this rate.
Sorry! A majority of the news staff don't work at all over the weekend (we need a break too!), so I'm afraid some stuff that gets posted on Friday afternoons has a habit of slipping through the cracks until Monday.

That the demos are running on a regular PC shouldn't be that surprising, after all, the console is not ready yet.

What is really interesting (and enraging) is that the software is running on Windows 7.

That simply tells us that the software architecture is perfectly compatible with Windows 7 (not even Windows 8 exclusive), meaning porting games shouldn't be an issue, meaning any Xbone exclusives that are not released for PC have no justification beyond keeping a captive audience.

OT: So MS lied to us about something else; does this really surprise anyone? Now the real question is - since the games were being played on a PC running an Xbone OS - does this mean that we won't have to wait forever for a emulator to be made?
Considering what xbone architecture is suppose to be, 1 hyper-V hypervisor, 1 general purpose VM, running a stripped down version of Windows and 1 gaming dedicated VM.

I could be the easiest console to emulate to this day, has the best way to emulate it is simply to find how to run the VM on other hardware, in other word you wouldn't be emulating it, you will be running the real thing, except not on it dedicated hardware.

But I admit emulation might still be required for hardware, even if x86 system, has we just don't know how custom the system hardware is and how abstracted the VM will be, for it could be running with direct access to the metal for all we know and thus the VM could just be to restrict the hardware it has access to.

I actually think the system is more interesting for hacker then for gamer, because from a technical point of view it seem pretty interesting to dive into and for the more black hat oriented, the thing has basically a giant sign on it back saying "DDOS me, please".

E3 Demos ALWAYS run on PC rigs. This isn't new. It's been that way for forever. There are plenty of reasons to poopoo the Xbox One (and i'm on the bandwagon here) but this isn't one of them.

PS: Ps4 Devkits is code for "PC's with comperable specs to the ps4"
It's a matter of optics at this point. We except that previews of stuff for upcoming but unreleased consoles will be shown off on a PC. But there are legitimate ways to do that, and there are cheesy ways. Using a PC that is a legitimate Dev kit or is at least a close approximation of it is fine. Simply hanging up a sign saying demo is running on a PC of similar specs, actual console hardware is not available yet is forgivable. But egads! Stuffing overclocked over powered monster rigs in hidden cabinets, that use radically different hardware? It's beyond cheesy.

And yeah SONYs rigs may have been running Win 7 under the hood as well. But MS is the OS manufacturer. Windows 8 is heir centerpiece, and the core centerpiece of the XBox One. The thing they were seeking to demo. To use Win 7 to demo at this late stage is just a horrible PR situation, for two main product lines.

And consumers are much more alert to this sort of thing. Remember Aliens Colonial Marines? That wasn't that long ago. Cheesy spiked or fraudulent demos are on our radar just as much as cheesy DRM.

Aren't most or all games being shown at E3 running on PC's?
I always thought that was standard practice as it would be easier to control what happens.
It's not that it's running on a PC, it's that it's running on system specs far above what the actual Xbox One will be using that is the main thing here.
And it still crashed. I imagine if it were a real Xbone, it would have RROD'd. Or whatever the Xbone's equivalent might be.

Regardless, this story amuses me.

As Meme Keanu would say: If Xbox One and Xbox 360 Games can run on PC... Does that mean Halo's been on PC this whole time for only Microsoft?

Of for Christ sake. It's Monday morning, can't the universe just give Microsoft a break for a few days? What did Microsoft do to you to bring you such delight in tripping it over and kicking them in the balls?

Games for Windows Live?... Microsoft deserves bruised balls just for that atrocity.

OT

I think the whole thing is being blown out of proportion, fuelled by the anti MS and Xbone hype going around the interwebs (and don't get me wrong, I think the Xbone is a piece of shit, and as a PC gamer I'm even more concerned about Windows 8). But that doesn't mean we should start a feeding frenzy over every single thing.

As long as the Xbone can deliver on the quality of the E3 demos (and it **might**, despite the MUCH more powerful PC hardware... remember that a dedicated console can actually achieve the same graphical fidelity with fewer resources) the fact that it was run on PCs means NOTHING.

The Xbone hardware is finalized at this point, they won't change anything with the chip architecture or overall console design, but the software is likely far from it. Games that are still in development for hardware that is unreleased will clearly not be optimized yet. So it makes sense to run everything on a PC, since all games are, in fact, developed on PCs.

Does this show MS doesn't trust it's own hardware? No. That's bullshit. All it shows is that either the hardware or, most likely, the software for the console is not yet ready.

And if MS can't deliver on the promised quality... well. Y'all remember Aliens: Colonial Marines, right?

Would someone mind explaining or linking to an explanation, though, of why nvidia vs AMD would matter in their rig?
Probably because of PhysX. Nvidia announced that it will add PhysX support to consoles, but AMD GPU's on the PC can't run it properly.

So does this mean we'll be able to use XBone controllers with Win7? Because that's really the only good thing I can see coming out of this mess.

Wow, just when you think things couldn't blow up in microsoft's faces even more, they do. The Xbox one is looking more like the next generation version of the 3do.
