Looks like the PSP/DS game is still kicking:

DNF may die, but Apogee, maker of the excellent Wacky Wheels, lives on...

Oddly I have accepted Duke Nukeum forever is not now or ever been a real worked on game.

Yes some faked cut scenes and new skined game play of a different game...

Duke was out in what 93? And Duke 3d, does anyone really care about a game that is half rodey piper and Half Evil dead ash quips anymore.

There is no Duke Nukeum....only Zuul.

That's it. I can't take this crap anymore. I'm sick of the lame DNF jabbing this site does when they want to be funny.

Droves of people are losing their jobs, and you people think they deserve it? Really?!

No no, how dare they make their game for a long time. The nerve of trying to refine things.

Of course, when TF2 came out, everyone foamed at the mouth and cheered hooray for Valve, it was worth the wait, and so on. The same goes for Chinese Democracy. Even WINE was positively received.

I think at least half of you never even played a Duke Nukem game, and just jumped on the bandwagon.

I don't think everyone jumped on the back of Chinese Democracy. That album was a piece of shit.

But I see what you're saying. Sure the developers have placed a whole lot of time and effort into the project, but it's to the point where its getting ridiculous. Even with the TF2 example, Valve took so long because they made 4 or 5 versions of the game, each with radically different styles, to see which worked best. Here all we seem to get are pre rendered screen shots and trailers.

So true.

Though it'd be so cool if it was just a stunt to release Duke Nukem next week.

What more can you say about Duke Nukem Forever that has not already been said? Even if they miraculously shipped a full and complete game by tomorrow, there is no way it could be good.

Games conceived during antiquated times with tortured developments dragged out to infinity do not fare well. Remember reading about the feature list of DNF and being excited about all these neat and innovative ideas they had? Today that stuff is all amateur hour. It's like Romero bragging about his 7-month development time on a game slightly more advanced than Doom while Valve comes out with Half-Life and completely rewrites the rules of the genre.

So who cares about some dumb dinosaur game which never even existed in the first place? Good riddance I say.

Updated: 3D Realms Shutting Down

Sources have told The Escapist that once-mighty studio 3D Realms will be closing its doors.

Though 3D Realms has yet to provide a reason for the closure, it's not too hard to guess that it has something to do with Duke Nukem Forever's turbulent development history. The game was originally announced in late April of 1997, then spent over twelve years in development hell. Despite George Broussard's claims that the title had "hit a major milestone" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90964-Duke-Nukem-Forever-Hits-Major-Milestone] last month, there hadn't been even the barest hint of a demo build. If your answer to the question, "So, you've been working on this game for twelve years ... got anything playable to show?" is "No, not really..." then it'd be understandably difficult to convince people to keep funding a project.

As for right now, the fate of gaming's most famous vaporware is undetermined. It's possible that there could be a sudden savior to swoop in and save the infamous title and studio from the brink. It's possible that 3D Realms might be able to just slap something together and hope for the best, but none of that is really likely.

The Escapist has contacted 3D Realms for a statement and is awaiting a response.

UPDATE: Deep Silver and Apogee Software have issued the following statement: "Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned."

So... DNF could possibly come out at some point? The project hasn't been canceled? Then the vaporware peasants have a king once more, one more senior than any of them could ever hope to be. Will it ever be made? Only time will tell. So, basically no.

Humour eases the pain.

They don't deserve it, but it's just not suprising that a company that has been working on a famous game for 12 years with little to show for it has crumbled in our current economy.

Taking their time refining? They don't have anything to refine. No tech demos, no character models, nothing.

TF2 was worth the wait. Plus they've given us Half-Life2 (obviously) plus it's expansions, plus Left4Dead, plus Portal, plus setting up Steam. Chinese Democracy was OK, apart from Better which I love. Wtf is WINE? I don't even know why you're comparing DNF to these things.

And for the record, I played the first Duke Nukem.

This just in, a Unicorn has flown out of Duke Nukems ass and brought him back to life. Also, pigs are flying outside our studio window. Details at 11.

Duke Nukem was taken off life support today, May 6th 2009. He went into a Coma 1997. He is survived by his stripper wife and his many grandchildren, every modern FPS.

The debate over the morality and legality of removing the Duke from his feeding tube rages on, but whatever the case at least we know, Duke is going on to a more peaceful place.

I bet the 3D realms guys will find work elsewhere, and then the game gets finished by the "original" dev. team because they can actually finish it under their new masters.

-but holy shit this is like... id software going under or something.

It's all but effectively canceled. Take Two Interactive holds the rights to DNF, and they don't seem too interested in making it at all.

It's possible. After all, after Lucasarts effectively told their adventure game fans to "Fuck Off", quite a few people who made Lucasarts what it is left and founded their own companies. Like Tim Schafer and Double fine, as well as a lot of the TellTale guys(who made their own Sam and Max games after Lucasarts pussied out on theirs).
