They're not gonna wanna sell, so it's basically down to being banned or puling the plug themselves. I see no problem here other than it's limited to Tiktok

Only reason they're banning it is cause they can't strongarm the owners into censoring the ongoing Palestinian genocide from ppl recording on the ground
That and they just really don't like China owning the most popular social media site. The coverage of the Palestinian genocide is just how they got both the Dems and Reps to agree to a ban, but they've been wanting to get rid of this for years now.

Anyway, if this coincided with a ban on ALL social media (or at least facebook and twitter) I'd be busting out the saxophone, but as it stands it's just America clearing the way for Musk and Zuck.

I really don't like the precedent that the US can ban a thing purely and only because they don't like who owns it. Like, we aren't banning data collection agencies from selling to China
There's legit good reason to ban TikTok. Several other countries have already done it.

Agreed, though would swap the china and genocide around in that is usually easier to fool a human into fearing the abstract concept of a country than supporting a clearly escalating genocide. It's the evangelicals and John Hagee with their grubby fingers over that nightmare

All social media are cancer
Can't argue with that. In fact, I used to hate twitter as well, but ever since community notes became a thing, the spread of misinformation seem to have quelled down a bit.

But tiktok? this platform seems to attract the worst challenges, trends, and "pranks" that are either dangerous, being fucking rude in public, illegal, or harassing people in public. There are also people who try to justify their toxic behaviors, cancel someone by accusing them of doing something inappropriate when they were actually minding their own business, or spreading misinformation, which is something I hate.

Granted, these problems are still seen in other SMS, but Tiktok is the true hotspot.
