If they give it and the heroes the same name. Then I think, yes that could be problematic.

Am not 100% sure but I think every Wc3 map is the intellectual property of Blizzard.

Edit:
And yes people, go ahead and start playing Heroes of Newerth. That game is a bomb.

God I hate DotA. It's just simply not fun. And the nerd rage. Oh, the nerd rage. Sometimes I can still hear it in my sleep...

Don't quit your dayjob.

At any rate... Hardly a surprise is it? Valve has a long standing history of acquiring entire "amateur" moding teams and sending them off to the "big leagues". In fact, except for Half-life, every single Valve franchise I can remember was born like that.

Given that, and that one of their latest "acquisitions" was, indeed, the DotA developer, this is hardly unexpected. Still, good to hear more about it.

Ehh, it's a bit like arguing that Team Fortress is owned by iD (unless I've missed something over they years and that Blizzard really does own all the custom content produced: which makes the merger with Activision seem like a good idea, due to similar policies).

I laughed at "Heroes of Newell".

Blizzard has no ownership over ANY custom maps. They have as much right to DotA as anyone else.

Yes Blizzard does own DotA.

Uh, no they don't. Unless you can somehow prove they have it trademarked/copyrighted.

Icefrog (current developer of DotA) was hired by Valve months ago for unspecified reasons.
Perhaps they're showing their hand at last?

I could never really get into DotA because everybody was always an asshole to me and kicked me for not having a fucking buy order and character build strategy and other stupid shit. It's become way too exclusive in WC3, and definitely not a good place for noobs.

Interesting. Valve never ceases to surprise us.

Still waiting for HL2: Episode 3.

Just start the Wc3 Editor man. I'm modding Wc3 since quite some time if you don't trust me, whatever. You don't seem like someone who has a clue of that business so... no thanks. I Won't do you the favor and provide a screen. Just look it up yourself and if you don't even have Wc3 just don't even argue -.-

You, good sir, have to READ the terms and agreements that Blizzard Entertainment presents to you when you want to use the World editor or make a registration onto Battle.Net.

A part of it tells you that YOU, the creator, has no ownership of the Blizzard custom maps, but Blizzard Entertainment alone.
Including the ones you make your own. It's quite sensable since you're using THEIR tool to do it in the first place, as it also only works using Wacraft III.

... Yeah, that's that.

OT: Dota, shmota. I am as surprised as you, News Anchor, that people took interest in this.
... Aren't I being a hypocrite now?

...What the fuck are you talking about? Blizzard owns the editor, yes. They do not own the customs maps created with it. And be fucking coherent when you type.

Okay, they own the maps. They do not own DotA as a property regardless, so the point is moot in this situation.

Anything that VALVe does make is awesome. Well, Alien Swarm not so much, but god dammit, it is for free, what else did you expect? A master-piece? But i cant see VALVe developing a RTS. That just does not fit into my mind.

Wait, wait, wait. Your telling me that Blizzard didn't jump at the chance to hire the guys that made a custom game for Warcraft 3 that people play religiously? And Valve did? I know Valve is the big name that is always hiring guys from the mod community, but what the hell Blizzard?

I guess I must have missed that news about Valve hiring the creator a while back, but really, this is just shocking, but then I remember that Activision is evil, and it doesn't surprise me.

" I also question why you clicked on this news piece in the first place, but that's beside the point"
Well to answer your question, I read all of the news items on the Escapist as I find each is interesting and generally funny worded.

Icefrog should have no qualms from Blizzard as long as the new Valve developed Dota does not use any of the likenesses that were originally taken from Warcraft 3. Ie, no using the Arthas or the Illidan models for the heroes. They'll have to be modified or changed, similar to how HoN's champions are based off DotA but look quite different.

If you've never played Defense of the Ancients, it's a wildly popular custom game built using the Warcraft III map editor in which players control a single hero (rather than an army) in a team battle to destroy the other team's base. I also question why you clicked on this news piece in the first place, but that's beside the point.
I clicked because I looked at the sidebar and read: 'Valve Files Trademark for... Dead or the Alive? Day of the Arkanoid? Maybe it means just that, Dot-A, and is a retro shooter.'

I had to find out.
