This makes me happy, because it solves a dilemma I've been having (i.e. getting Portal 2 on either PS3 or PC/Mac) It also means that I'll be able to play co-op with all of my friends from either version.

Valve, you've made me very, very happy.

This news probably won't be quite as popular with Xbox 360 and PC players, however, as they will have to fork out the same amount of money as PS3 owners in exchange for significantly less content.
Wont the pc version be alot cheaper like every other game?
Also the version with most content is the version with the razer hydra, that offers additional levels and new mechanics like motion controls and scaling blocks etc.
So they pay more for less content.
Still pretty good deal though. They propably want to convert a few playstation gamers. Totally get what you mean.

nothing has ever given me more viruses or lag then having a steam account. i would not wish that on anybodies PS3. On the flip side, i do want portals.... conundrums... :(
Steam doesn't have viruses, some games, like NWN2 give a falso positive if you have a really bad antivirus like avira free or norton.
And since users can't upload files... I assume you browse alot of pornsites?

Ha! 360 gets shafted this time! I love Valve. And looks like I'm getting this on PS3 since I'll get a free copy on PC anyway.

nice to hear but what i want to know is does this offer work both ways? as in you buy the PC version and link you PSN account and get a PS3 copy of the game. if not seems a bit unfair for the other two platforms.
just buy the ps3 version?

Stupid Microsoft, not letting Valve put Steam on the xbox! I'm not happy that I'll be missing out but my rage is not aimed at Valve or Sony. I think it's a really good idea allowing you to play the game over multiple platforms and carrying over your progress. MS genuinely suck in this department, just look at "Game Room" where you can buy individual titles for 240MSP or pay 400MSP to also play it on your PC. What a load of shit.

Weird.
No issues here. Or with my friend who is a Steam fanatic.
No lag, no viruses...and I'm running it on a netbook.
Like I said: Weird.

OT: This is pretty bad-ass. I think it would be better if people who bought the PC version could get the PS3 version digitally for free. I think that would even it all out (Except for us 360 players), but one step at a time, I suppose. Valve did kind of alienate their PS3 user-base, so it only makes sense that they'd do something like this as a way of saying 'whoops, our bad'.

So I wish I had a PS3 now! Especially since they've said how this is 'only the beginning'.
Can't wait to see what else rolls out!

I dont think PC gamers really care about this so much as we seem to be the ones who don't like to add fuel to the console war. But if you're like me whos a PS3 and PC gamer then this is awesome news. I can just buy a PS3 copy and also have it on my PC.

Meh, i dont care much. if i had a ps3, that would be nice, but since im a pc gamer anyway imma be fine. maybe i can play with my one freind who actually has a ps3 because of this.

And, to the other platforms: please don't see this as you NOT getting that extra copy. That extra copy is DIRECT PENANCE AND PAYBACK FOR ORANGE BOX PS3. Y'all got 3 games that were done right the first time, we get two copies of the SAME GAME. Not exactly crying material, imo.
oh whine about it. valve didnt even develop the orange box for the ps3 and i hate how gamers feel they deserve crap cause they buy crappy ports. the extra copy is NOT payback for the orange box. its because the game uses (fully implements) steamworks, and when you activate a game on steam its downloadable for your account. its like how at least valve games (not all other devs though) you can buy the pc version and you can get the mac version free. i wouldnt be suprised if it works this way for all the ps3 versions of valve games from now on.

now it will be intresting to see weather valve start allowing more games to come to the PS3, or whether we have to settel with Portal 2 and the orange box

That's great! Many of my friends play on the PS3 and one has specifically said, that he'd only buy Portal 2 if he could play on his PS3 together with me, while I'm on the PC. So, as soon as I tell him this, Valve will have a customer more.

Wait.... I buy PS3 version, and get PC version for free?!?!?

Valve, do you want just my first born, or would you like the second as well?

It's about time the 360 got the shaft. I'm normally one of the people to say that the PC is one of the only ways to properly game, but I've always really rooted for the PS3. Probably because I want Microsoft's monopoly of endlessly crappy products to come to an end. Seriously, I'm not a mac fanboy, but microsoft has a habit of putting out sub-par trash; the Xbox 360 is no exception. (Neither are Windows, Zune, the original xbox [huge box of overheating parts. good game library, mind you, but still a piece of crap], not to mention Bing...)

I would, as a friend of mine is going to get it on the ps3, but I want custom maps. Now I can play with him, have custom maps, and even get trophies as a bonus!

I'm really, really happy they did this.

I imagine, considering the amount of fanboy rage it caused among 360 fans that Bioware made Mass Effect 2 better on the PS3, that you are right about them not being happy about this.

Why would PC gamers be unhappy though? If they have a PS3 they can just buy it there and get the PC version as well. If they don't, then I hardly see that they lose anything. They still end up with the best (and cheapest) version of the game and have no need for a PS3 copy as they don't own the system.

That said, I will consider if I'll buy the PC version or the PS3 version. I suppose it would be fun to see how Steam on my PS3 works.

I wont be getting the 360 version of course due to my lack of a gold sub, and refusal to actually play online on both my PS3 and 360.

PSN and PC - Portal co-op?

Not sure how I feel about that.
I do. Potential for L4D2 co-op, TF2 co-op, and opening the door for some AAA cross platform co-op (dare I say, the next Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty cross platform multiplayer).
TF2 co-op? Surely you're jesting? Aside from the lack of actual co-op in the game I gather that the PS3 (and 360) version of TF2 is atrocious so it would need some brushing up. And a million updates.

As for L4D2, I think I would prefer not to play that one with console people. The community is bad enough as it is. And there's the lack of the actual game on PS3.

That's actually no different than buying the PS3 version and getting the PC version as a download. You still get it on both platforms, you just have to buy it on PS3 to do so. Doesn't make a lot of sense to reverse it.
