Valve Nixes Half-Life 3 Rumors

I'm getting concerned that Valve is walking the same path as Cyan Worlds:
A brilliant and creative game studio that launches a massively popular title (Myst/Half-Life), raises up a devoted fan base, takes forever to make the sequels, and then lapses back into obscurity, only making money on side-projects (Cyan: iPhone games, Valve: Steam).

Of course, for that analogy to work Valve would have to actually make Half-Life 3, because at least before Cyan dropped off the map they finished their damn story-arc!

I don't know whether or not to love Valve.
On one hand, they are making new games. On the other hand, no hopes raised for Half-Life.
On one hand, Steam is awesome with deals. On the other hand, the vast majority of games on there are Windows-only.

ARG I WANT MY EPISODE THREE! Jesus Christ this is ridiculous! They had better make it a full game instead of an expansion pack. What the hell is taking so long? It's Valve's engine, it can't take them that long to build a new game surely? Not 4 years for what is meant to be a simple expansion at the very least! I would expect to wait this long for a sequel, but even that's a damn stretch!

So Valve starts Ep 3 but then nixes episodic development. Why does this sound familiar? Oh yes...3D Realms starts Duke Nukem Forever but then changes engines.

Considering what happened with DNF this doesn't bode well at all. Suddenly I like the idea of EA starting its own digital service. If Steam suddenly stops being so easy a cashcow maybe Valve will get off its ass and start being a decent game company again.
And Valve? Stop disconnecting Steam every frakkin half hour!

Valve, you are awful, awful liars.
I fully agree. I've been looking up Half Life 2 episode 3/Half Life 3 since I got the Orange Box earlier this year, and I Have seen alot of evidence that they are working on it, although in secret. There are alot of subtle hints to it being in development.

I don't know what to say to that, but I find awfully funny.

So now he's Scrooge McDuck? Hmm, oddly fitting all things considered.

Though on topic, I honestly don't care too much about Half Life 3 anymore, all this waiting and rumors have made me pretty much made me apathetic to the whole idea.
Sooooooo...

That means you're still open to Episode 3, right?

I seem to remember something in the Dev. commentary play through of HL2 mentioning Ep3 development repeatedly, but I may be wrong about that.

Right now, I'm just running on the assumption that every Hl3/2 ep 3 thread on the internet magically pushes back the release date another year, and trying not to think about it.

Thing is, Half-Life 2: Episode 3 =/= Half-Life 3.

When exactly will the Half Life fanboys turn around and straighten up? I know they must like the table they've been bent over for the last four years but come on, other companies have put forward two or three games in that time.

But then again, I've said before that I didn't even like the original Half Life, so my opinion is a little skewed. At least my opinion allows me to play more than one new game from the series that I really love every decade though!

They probably just want the game to be a worth successor to both half-life 1 and 2.
I'm young and I can wait, whatever.

Get on the mic Mike let's be real and don't cloud the issue!

His name's Mike D. not Fat Morton Jelly Roll!

Everyone knows Mike D. And if they don't, they can Ch-Ch-Ch-Check out the Beastie Boys.

OT : Valve? No. None of this. Get rid of your hat fetish, release Half-Life 3 and stop fucking up TF2 with your insane weapons store.

"Episode 3 is well poised to take its crown as gaming's most infamous vaporware."

4-year-old game with no official announcement beyond, "we plan to do 3 episodes" versus game in development for 14 years that suffered many release dates, launch trailers, developers and official announcements.

I really don't see the point of comparison that everyone seems to.
You can't really compare those two anymore, it's true. Since, y'know, DNF was released. Meaning it's not vaporware.

Need to stop raising my expectations, odds are Episode Three will only come out once I've forgotten it entirely.

Eh, we'll hear about it eventually. Lombardi said just two or three months ago that we WILL see more Half-Life and Gordon Freeman. We just don't what form it will take.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I screwed up the wording thanks for pointing that out.

But what I said still stands for both Episode 3 and Half Life 3, thank you very much for pointing out my horrid fallacy, I will now go flog myself for my horrid mistake.

I've lost interest in the speculation and rumors at this point. When Valve finally does decide to announce Half-Life 2: Episode 3/Half-Life 3, I'll bounce off the walls then.
