I wonder how Steamworks on the PSN will work, and more specifically, who will pay for the bandwidth charge?
Since Sony charges the developers for the bandwidth used for all downloads, will Valve have to pay these charges for every game, demo and update they release, and will these charges be passed on to the customer (like no sales or special offers, or no free demos and updates)?
I've noticed that on my PC, some of Steam's updates for Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2 are pretty big and occur quite frequently, and when you multiply these large and frequent updates by the potential number of PS3 owners with Steamworks, that's going to quite a lot of bandwidth charges (and a high monetary amount) which will either have to be accounted for, or written off by Sony.
Also, if Sony starts writing off these charges for Valve, but not for other developers, then that could cause animosity and dissuade other developers from releasing content on the PSN.
I suppose the simplest solution would be for Sony to make Steamworks and Valve games only available to PSN+ members, so that these download charges and bandwidth costs will be recouped by the subscriptions.
