I think it's too cluttered. It may of been really cool if you removed the robots entirely and just left the two portals and the background.

I like it, it highlights the new co-op feature. It is a tad cluttered though.

I'm with you, pretty lame.

I would have hoped for something more minimalist and... arty? I mean it's a puzzle game for god's sake.

That image of the two robots holding hands would have been perfect for the box art. Or the one where we see GlaDOS through a portal... Don't really care that much though. Everybody should know about portal by now.

If they wanted to focus on the co-op I had another idea. Stark white box background with some grey panels (like the ones in the game) trailing off at the corners or with grid-like dark lines. The blue "Portal 2" logo, stick man and all, at the top. The middle of the box is the the yellow and blue portals side my side, each of the robots peeking out from, stepping out, or holding hands across the portals. This one those really strike me at all. One of the robots gets totally lost in the background.

Of course, though, i'll get it on Steam, so screw this.

ME2's cover image is in the spirit of movie posters for old scifi movies/covers for pulp scifi writing (which largely inspired the aesthetic of the game). If people don't recognize that though I can see why they wouldn't care for it.
You know considering my first thought of Mass Effect was about its pulpy graphics style I'm a little suprised I didn't see it. Green alien is a total double of Han Solo there.

Would look better if the yellow bot had more happier/excited expression. Just gluing awesome.jpg on his face made the cover much more exciting.

The cover doesnt either demonstrate how the portals work...meh.

The box is too busy. It's like they are focusing on teaching what Portals are instead of making someone curious to what the game feels or looks like.

Considering how I'll probably just buy it off of Steam what the box art looks like means almost nothing to me.

If I were going to make a cover for it that focused on the co-op element I would have gone with something simple like the two bots standing side by side at a set of elevator doors with the portal guns held up(so they're more clearly visible) like they're ready to go. but maybe that doesn't show the concept of the portals very well

I wouldn't call it bad, but I really liked the minimalist approach to the box art of the first Portal and I think it would be good if they continued that onto Portal 2.

Not that it matters to me much, I'll be buying it on Steam, anyway.

Ell as long as the game's good then I don't care. Retail is still important as is having a cool box to grab a shopper's eye. Though a the L4D box art's story shows they do put a lot of thought into design.

I'm putting the release date in pencil just to be on the safe side.

The original had a lot more mysterious box art. THis explains too much... -_-
2 robots running around, one coming out of one portal and jumping into another.

I can totally see how that explains everything!

/sarcasm

Seriously though, how does it explain anything other than that portals are involved?

I'm sorry if I sounded like a dick, but I wanted to poke a bit of fun before seriously asking that.

OT:

...Not really the box art that I would have chosen.

It's good, I just don't feel that it's good enough to be box art.
Well, compared to the originals this just has much too much stuff about the game. Of course the things it explains, we already know, but still. Look at the original: http://www.halflife2.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/portal.jpg

It's a symbol with a guy and a hole. We do not know if it's some kinda sign. Do we jump into holes? Is it even a hole?

THen this one. We see robots. Ok, it has robots. We see portals. Ok, it has portals or similiar magical holes in the walls. We see a sci-fi setting. It's gonna be a sci-fi-ish game. 2 robots. Probably 2 players.

It is true that as a sequal, we already know about the game(s), so we dont need all the mystery, but I would had liked for them to continue the sign-style from the first game. Much like they did with L4D-series.

Don't care, it's never going to show up on Steam.

I stopped worrying about box-art and, yes, even manuals, when I started buying games for dirty, dirty prices.
Pretty much that... I never looked at the manuals anyway...

I don't think that box art matters so much. I mean, look at Mass Effect 2, a great game, yet it was voted to have the worse box art of the year...
