"Because you can shoot these aliens, and they're there again the next day. You have to shoot them again. And I firmly believe that Daniel Petric had no idea, at the time he hatched this plot, that if he killed his parents, they would be dead forever."

This just made me cringe. Really? You think that this guy believed that if he killed his parents that they would respawn tomorrow? Really? He was 16... I think that you pretty much understand this part of life at that age.
Wait. They don't?
Thanks for the heads up bro, you saved me an awkward situation.

There is something wrong with someone when they kill their parents because they can't play a certain videogame.

The videogame has no bad role in this. It is the fault of the person who commits the crime not the object that was to be obtained by killing hi parents.

Judges and killers like that are what give gamers and videogames a bad name.

Here's the part I'm having trouble getting my head around.

And bear in mind that I live in Canada, so that may have something to do with my lack of comprehension in this particular matter.

But in all the arguments and debates and commentary about whether or not Halo 3 had anything to do with this, I haven't seen one person - not a single one - point out that nobody would've been shot at all if there hadn't been a fucking loaded gun in the house.

Kinda weird, eh?
He wouldn't have been able to get the gun if it was properly secured.

I mean come on, it's not like the gun was even lying out in the open. It was inside an unlocked lock box. Why would you put something in a lock box and then not lock the box?

Regardless of any violent influences Halo may have had on him (I'm in Aus so this news is new to me, but it seems a little weird that the violence in Halo make him kill his parents if he wasn't allowed to play it... o_O?) he's 16. He's old enough to play the game without parental supervision (by AUS standards), and he's old enough to understand the repercussions of such violence. Perhaps an infant or a young child could be forgiven for imitating the actions and not understanding that such violence should not be carried out in the real world, but he's nearly an adult!
Besides, Halo 3 makes it very clear about how bad it is to kill the 'good guys' (AKA any human). At the beginning of Crows Nest, if you kill any of the marines, the whole facility will hunt you down and shoot you. Hey look, a video game that teaches us about consequences! YAY!
Video games are NOT a justifiable reason for murder or any other form of violence, merely an inadequate and cowardly excuse.
In the first Halo, if you shot any human in the first level, invincible marines would come after you, so...................

It is my opinion that as a person, not just a forum member, that jurists should stick to their respective positions and not comment on the effects of dopamine surges that come from Halo 3. You know what else causes a dopamine surge? Sex. Ban it I say!
Indeed, ban anything mildly fun, if you experience fun, that is dopamine, therefore, by this fuckwad's logic, all things fun and pleasurable should be banned because they are addictive.

I thought this was about games that were made as Halo 3 killers and ended up actually being better. i just lost interest.

But it's a court case! I am now interested again! Interesting. I think a standard insanity plea would have worked better. Of course all my court experience comes form a three week long mentorship program in sixth grade and Law and Order.

Halo is distinctly not like dope. Halo feels more like an exciting game of chess to me.
At least, that's what I've learned from the medicine I'm taking for my adenoma.

If some kids parents wouldn't let him outside, and he killed them, would outside be to blame? If they wouldn't let their kid have his bike, and he killed them, would the bike be to blame?

Short answer: NO!!!
Long answer: No! And you're a judge! you don't get paid to have an opinion!

really? its the games fault? excuse me while i go bash my truck into someone and blame it on Grand Theft Auto..

people make me sad. if he had a "serious defect of the mind" he obviously needed to see a specialist. i'll remember if i ever do something like this to shift the blame onto the item i was using. sigh.

oh, and he got 23 years in jail before his parole! SUCCESS!!!!! no halo 3 for you my friend. i shall enjoy playing immensely improved games in 10 years while you rot in jail.
