i live in Hamilton (southern ontario) and the Hamilton board specifically has an annoying habit of being really fussy about closing schools -_-
it doesn't matter if all the other boards around us are totally closed, hamilton does not. I swear the halton board which is RIGHT BESIDE US closes for everything. it's quite annoying.
my theory is that the pollution from all the factories melts the snow so we get less

Very very very rarely. Or at least my school barely does. We have some neighbors who will shut down school if 3 inches of snow falls. In the mean time, I have to wait for the bus in about 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

Well, I live in charleston, South carolina (darn my broken c key for making my posts look bad). Snow is extremely rare. I'm 23 and have only seen three here in my lifetime. One was very early this year (February, I think) and it kind of had a shut down effect. Very few people were driving, and I don't even think we had salt to put on the roads. I guess since snow is so rare, it makes little financial sense to have a bunch of preparations on standby. Schools closed until it cleared out, churches cancelled their services, and many businesses closed as well.

Considering I live within the Twin Cities metro area of Minnesota (or Minne-snow-ta, as some like to jokingly call us), I have to scoff at the reactions of the OP's local authorities. Last Saturday we got around 2-3 feet of snow, and while some districts in the area were closed on Monday, my district and school were open as if nothing happened.

Basically, around here there has to be a fuckton of snow during a weekday for schools to close. Otherwise, we continue with only minor delays here and there in terms of busing and traffic.

One winter in high school we had nearly a foot of snowfall in two hours and half the busses were two periods late but they couldn't call it for some reason. The next day we got a few inches and they called it. I never understood these people.

Where I'm from you don't cancel school because of snow. You walk through 8 inches and get into class with your knees bleeding if you have too. We're a tough bunch, none of this poncy 'rest of England half an inch hault everything' BS. Bloody southeren faries.

I live in northern minnesota and we rarely get school closings because of snow alone. We have a system for temperature though. If its below
-45 faranheit we close. We never delay school. I guess they assume its a waste of time.

Northern Kentucky here. Our particular school district is about ten different kinds of stupid. If there's a light dusting of snow and no one around us is canceling school, you bet your ass we're going to be unique little snowflakes (pun totally intended) and cancel. But if everyone around us is out because we got 4-6 inches of snow and there are wrecks and everything bad is happening, whelp, too bad, school day for you.

Where I live, we never get snow. We have so much ran that it turns to ice instead. Except this year when we FINALLY got snow. But it's mostly rain. We get snow maybe for a maximum of 3 days worth. This year though, we've had at least a weeks worth though.

In the upper midwest we refer to snow as well.... snow. Yeah, we only close down things if theres about 2-3 feet.

As someone else said, here in the UK it depends. The town I live in always seems to get the least of the bad weather, possibly because it's central, possibly because it's in a valley so we're lower down. The other week when most of the UK was covered, our streets were clear...bloody weather.

I do have to drive to Carlisle Christmas eve which should be fun if the weather forecast is accurate. That's a journey of around 230 miles. Motorway nearly all the way there, but when you get to the border with Scotland it's all hills and single lane national limit roads, hoorah!

Hello dear Escapist, a little background information 1st. Live in the southern united states, just north enough to get snow/sleet, but just south enough for the shcool board to *Pun not intended* freeze up when it does finally hit. Today, December 17, we had less than an inch of solid snowfall. The school system shut down all schools in about 10 counties.

So here is the question, my friends, how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow? Do you live in an area where you never recieve it and dont have to worry about it? Do you live where snow is a constant, something that simply becomes part of the norm? Do you live where any amount of snow causes almost complete sociotal breakdown? Hahahahaha. I live in Buffalo, so basically unless the snow is higher than the buses, your going to school. We've had a solid foot and a half for the past two weeks, and as of yet all that's happened is one day of no after school activities.

I live near D.C. and the schools near me are led by complete idiots when snow starts to fall. Six inches of snow and they like to call it two hours late. Oh no, five people got into accidents near the school? I'm sure it was just a coincidence, there will still be school! I hate my superintendent.

Pretty much this, same area and same situation. They freak out over an inch of snow but then other days we'll get a ton of snow and everywhere else will be closed but our schools are open.

Im near Toronto Canada, last year, we didnt have a single snow day. Which sucks. This year, in the past 2 weeks, we've missed a total of 5 days of school.

Today was a snow day actually.

Really? In Waterloo neither high school or elementary schools have been closed to my knowledge.
