40k is by far the greatest SciFi IP out there.

Guild Wars. I've never played, but considering they have no subscription fee, more people really should be.

Let me paint a picture for a moment. Space Marines (40k) are a remnant of humanity left over after a cataclysmic war. They are mostly made up of cloned beings from very specific genetic clone databases (Chapters) who possess technologies they no longer understand and have harnessed a kind of religion to both galvanize themselves and explain those technologies that are now not unlike magic to them. Communion with tech often involves what they call rites or rituals and some "magic" is drawn from a psychic link to an other plane called simply "The Warp". This religion also connects them to the last remains of the Terran Empire and a single Emperor who is likely one of the last remaining vestiges of the old civilization.
I'm going to go all Lore Nazi on you now. :D
The Imperium of Man is by no means "last remains", nor are the Space Marines remnants. The Imperium consists of over a million Marines and countless trillions of regular humans and is the largest established empire in the galaxy by a long shot. Humankind is under attack from all sides and within, but it's not a struggling shadow of its former self.

The Imperium's just a horribly shitty place to live due to overzealous inquisitors, a totalitarian government, and the constant possibility of being raped, tortured, dismembered, eaten alive, or all of the above by one of mankind's many enemies. Look at it this way: There are enough humans that the government is willing to exterminate an entire planet's population if it's a sound tactical maneuver. It's the Eldar who are really struggling.

Sorry, I'm a terrible lore nerd. And of course I most certainly agree that the lore is some of the most entertaining and original sci-fi fare I've ever read.

Well well well. I hope this new MMO fails de Emprah - if only so i can see all the 40k fanboys raging about it.

I absolutely agree with you there. I hope there's a special place in the Warp set aside for Games Workshop's legal department. Bastards.

And it's the most fun when you don't take it seriously. Embrace the memes and read the Cain novels. You'll come to realize the entire universe is rather hilarious.

I'd play if I got to play Eldar.
"What do you know of war?"

Imperial Guard would be cool too. Drivin around a Baneblade would be pretty sweet.
"We'll make the Emperor proud."

WE ARE THE EMPEROR'S FINEST

I would absolutely play it if it were well done and engaging. Hell, I'd even play it if it WASNT fun- as long as it does the setting justice. Dawn of War did an amazing job as an RTS. I'd love to see them pull an MMO out of it.

Of course, in my heart of hearts, there will someday be a Battlefield/MAG type massive squad/vehicle based FPS with the 40k IP. I get a little too excited when I think about being able to choose multiple classes or load-outs within multiple factions in the Grim Darkness.

But then again, Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment...

What I don't get is that Blizzard has admitted on several occasions that they have nothing but the utmost respect for GW, and I'm fairly sure GW reciprocates. But the fanboys hate each other.
Speaking as someone who's only a fan of WH40k through the Dawn of War games I can say right now that I do not hate Starcraft and Warcraft for ripping elements from the respective Warhammer universes whether blatantly intentional or just coincidence.

I hate them because they are treated as the be-all-end-all-once-and-future-king of RTS despite not being as such at any point in time ever. Including when they were first released. Not to mention the deifying of Blizzard to the point that anything they do that is questionable is merely just blamed on Activision despite Blizzard operating autonomously from them.

My subjective distaste aside, I am ambivalent about a WH40k MMO. If it's done really well I might, that's might consider throwing down money on a monthly basis to play it, but it'd have to be pretty impressive.

Feeble-minded fool, how dare you prefer something over WH40k!

As for whether I would buy it: I don't know, sounds interesting but I don't think I would jump right in before hearing some good feedback from players/reviwers.

GET HIM!!

OT: This is the biggest thing for me at E3 this year, cannot wait to see how it actually works.
Bigger then Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine? Maybe. I have high hopes for this.

2 WH40K GAMES IN E3 W000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000T!

Ahem, I had to do that. E3 is going to be EPIC! I can't wait for this.

Star Craft is a more of a game suited to people who aren't hard core Nerds. After all, they did rip off WH40K, Starship Troopers, Aliens and countless other franchises.

WH40K on the other hand? It is suited for the way more geeky crowd. The games aren't though. I just knew Star Craft will be in this thread. Knowing John Funk.

If you think the Warhammer 40k universe takes itself too seriously, you should go read the Wikipedia page on the Orks. This universe has a race that paints things red because that makes them go faster and a class of character that has run away from home to join the military because they're tired of being told they can do whatever they want.

Everything in Warhammer 40k is a parody of over-the-top sci-fi tropes. Starcraft is actually the "serious" IP that plays all those tropes straight faced.

(I like them both by the way.)

I've got no real hope for this game, mostly because whenever devs try to make a new MMO, they usually can't seem to break the quest grinding mold of EQ/WoW.

Rainbows and happy ponies? You're thinking of Diablo ;)

I know it's intended to be surreal and wacky. It just puts me off, personally.

I have a hard time relating to anyone in WH40k, because it seems that everyone is just a dick. The Space Marines are fanatic superhumans; I can't relate to them. I do like the Imperial Guard because they're basically just normal people, but they're the only ones - whereas the Terrans and Jim Raynor are still just humans, just in space suits with guns.
Naw. Certainly thinking about SC there. Its just the models in game always seemed...cute o.o Those cuddly little zerglings or boxy tanks that would make perfect plushies. It lacked the uh, edge in design and SC2 didnt changed that. Just like WH40K is supposed to be surreal and grotesque SC will always seem like it is supposed to be cute, in an odd way, but still cute.

You should clealry try Orks. Orks are easy to releate to, being the WH40Ks comic relief part. With their bootboy attitude and mangled english impression of cockney, always ready for a good brawl and fun at expense of the rest of the universe.
"Orkses is never defeated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

All in all tho. Im just tired of seeing SC brought up every time something about WH40K hits the gaming world. Guess that might be reason for many flame wars in hisotry between the two fanboi groups. Someone always mentions one when discussion is about the other <.<

We shall consume, we shall devour and multiply. For the Hive Mind we fight.
Yeah... I'm really curious how many races they are actually planning on using. And how the mechanics of each are going to work. Oh well something to look forward to heh.

Because the Warhammer universe isn't totally ripped off from Tolkien like every other fantasy setting, and the Warhammer 40k universe isn't just, as the title implies, the same, only set 40 000 years in the future?

I can't figure out how StarCraft is less ridiculous than Warhammer 40,000. Maybe if you're only comparing the humans, I suppose, but they're still both 'futuristic' fantasy, Rule of Cool settings riddled with 'psychic energy' and conspicuously low-tech humans who emphasize the worst aspects of humanity.

In my mind, at least Warhammer 40K acknowledges its fantasy nature enough to have a cosmology. StarCraft is still in denial.
What, the giant cathedral ships, the marines with eighty hearts and two hundred intestines who live five hundred years and fight everything don't count as ridiculous?

SC is set in a relatively small sector of space, which I personally prefer. 40k is "and everyone fought everywhere forever."
Shouldn't editors try to stop flame wars instead of making them?

I almost get the feeling that he wrote this article to compare it to Starcraft. This news has been kicking about for a few months now even if Kotaku just posted it now http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/warhammer40kmmo/news.html?sid=6249498.

The thing I dont like about starcraft is that I feel outside the main story (which I don't really care about) the world is nebulous and illusionary. The world of starcraft is what is in the game the rest of it is not really there. I can't imagine that Starcraft exists, it completely fails to pull me into the world because I dont see how things come to be.

I don't know if you were just exaggerating for effect but your descriptions of 40k are overexaggerated and look more like the settings in game propoganda than the realities of the setting.

The point of 40k is it gives you the choice of where you want to be in the universe. You pick what area you fight over, you zoom into an area an concentrate on that. While the whole of 40k is set over the enture Galaxy the point is that you pick a small sector and use that.

One thing I thought was strange was when you said that you liked the Imperial Guard because they were human but they were the only humans but then said you liked it because starcraft humans were just humans which I dont really get. How does having one faction of humans in 40k which you dont mind different from having one faction of humans in Starcarft which you don't mind? Especially when the human faction in 40k represents the majority of the soldiers in the entire setting. The Space Marines represent a tiny percentage of humanities military, probably aroun 1x10^-4% and are meant to be unrelateable. There is approx 1m space marines and trillions of guardsman, the number of SM is comprable to the number of Imperial planets and most of the time they are not involved in battles.

Behind alot of the over the top stuff in 40k is pretty reasonable explinations. The base assumption that everyone in 40k is a dick is actually demonstrably wrong but the overall attitude is one of a harsh universe where hard decisions are made. The Imperium doesn't do things just to be evil, it does it to survive in a Universe that frankly doesn't care one way or another whether it does or not.

I'm actually not trying to convince you to like 40k and respect your preferance but I just don't understand your arguements. They seem to stem from a basic misunderstanding of the setting. I would rather you just said, "I just prefer it" than try and justify an opinion that does not need justifing. At the very least keep to things you like about Starcraft, tell us why you like that setting and not why you dislike 40k, its a much more positive approach and doesn't lead to flame wars.

SC vs WH40K aside.
Some time ago actually some leaked info appeared on the internet from supposed THQ board, from which it would appear that.
1) Playable races would be : Imperium, Eldar, Orks, Chaos.
2) Melee and range combat options
3) Around 29 zones on release, open world, cover system, PvP based on territory control and resources
4) Tyranids, while not playable will be a big PvE threat and pretty much the main bad guy.
5) Action is supposed to take place on actual 'canon lore' world of Tarelis (imperial forge world) approved by GW to make it into game world. (unlike Dawn of War taking place in Relic created part of WH40K universe and is limited to Relic's productions)
6) Vehicles/War Machines not on release but possible in future.

I'd play it if:
a) it's done well for all races,
b) it isn't subscription-based,
and c) there's enough incentive for people to play as more than just power-armoured brutes.

I myself would probably play an Eldar; I play them on the tabletop.
I've been an ork fan since the old Rogue Trader days and I would have to say these are the points I'm most concerned about.
B in particular.
I like 40K but I'm not paying a subscription for any game. Especially when you consider that most MMOs fail.
It's bad enough that you might play the game for a year or two then not be able to play it because they closed the servers but then you also have to think about all the money you wasted.
I think they should do a modified version of the D&D mmo: Charge people for the base game and base their additional income on micro-transactions. Plenty of fans of the Emperor (and of Chaos) would be willing to pay for terminator armor.
There are a lot of little microtransactions they could level on people for armor, items, weapons, and even vehicles.

Sounds like fun, unless we only get to play as one Marine chapter (even money says it'll be the Ultramarines).

I like the idea of swarming a Renegade Titan and smattering it to death with bolter fire.
