reminds me of this one time at the mall, where there was this huge outdoor water fountain
and these parents had these kids who were climbing onto the sides and stuff
then the mall cop or whatever came and was like come down it's not safe
and the parents got so pissed and started yelling at the security guy
...I wanted to just smack them for being such jerks but unfortunately that's somewhat illegal haha

Wow, she really reacted badly to your polite request. No you didn't do anything wrong and don't let anyone tell you other wise. Trust me, I've worked in retail and have had customers actually complain about my service just because they were inpatient.

Doesn't sound like you were rude at all. Some people, I swear.
I hope you don't get troubled by your manager OP, or whoever is running the store.

How many different ways can you say "No" in English, French, Italian and any other language you care to mention?
I can see no wrong from you, she just seems a stuck up cow.

On the bright side you can post your story at notalwaysright.com
First, I love that website.
Second, I don't know if I could, one, because I don't have the specifics, and two, it isn't as much funny as it is sad.

Personally I'd have reworded it differently, me being me but your wording would've shown that you had no offence.

She's just a psycho who missinterpreted what you said.

No you weren't being rude, in fact you said what you said much more politely than I could ever hope to be to a wanker like that.

I frequently lurk in retail outlets, just to catch people like this in the act and cut them down at the knees. You didn't do anything wrong, you were polite about it, and she freaked out because she is a self important hose beast whose knees should be sewn shut so she doesn't inflict anymore of her bastard spawn upon the earth. she will undoubtedly get what is coming to her stupid ass someday when she smarts off to someone like me, who gets up every morning and takes a large dose of FuckItAll.

Working in a grocery store, I run into these people all the time.

Trust me, what you did wasn't rude in the least bit. She was the rude one for overreacting to such a simple and reasonable request.

Don't give her a second thought.

It's always hilarious when the children are better behaved than their parents.

But, to answer your question: no, she was the one being rude.

Hell no, she's just a *****.
I agree but it really depends on ur tone. I wasn't there
I will assure you, I said it in the same polite tone that I said to the kids. I really don't like being rude to people's faces at work. I only did it once one day back during easter, by explaining to some that the coupon said "Free with any purchase" by the exact words "It says it right here below the words "Free Big Bite" (Yes, that is a cookie we serve). The only reason I slipped is because she was the 50th person I had to explain to that the coupon wasn't just a free cookie, it was with a purchase. I regret that slip up.
That woman didn't freak ou, though, she just angrily said that she was going to "Give the coupon back to where I got it from", which was funny to me because she got it from her kid who got it from our mall's guy in an easter bunny suit.

Consider the tone of your voice, that has more effect rather than what you said.
I very much did. I have been very considering of that after on incident during easter. I kind of originally thought why, and my boss explained it was my tone.
In the end, I apologized to my boss, and he said it was alright, we're only human, we all slip up sometimes.
Even though all was forgiven (By my boss), I have been very careful of my tone since then.

I just sorta think that would be quite stupid to file a complaint. She doesn't really have anything to gain by doing so, so whats the point?
Actually, many companies will respond to complaints with free goods/services. It's just part of the way situations are handled because it's often the easiest way out. Someone may come/call in ranting and screaming but, more often than not, they'll quiet down pretty quickly if you say "Okay, we're sorry. We'll give you X free for your troubles."

Based on the OP, was the OP being rude? No.

Does the customer have a valid complaint? Possibly. While it can be argued that the customer isn't always right, many honestly believe that they are. Given the situation and location, I wouldn't personally complain but I can see why she would be offended to some degree. Unfortunately, just sucking this kind of stuff up is part of many jobs. Trust me, I've been a security officer in a shopping mall.. you wouldn't believe the kind of garbage I've had to put up with. My situation was a little different in that there were many things I simply couldn't just stand by and let happen, but there are many occasions where the best thing to do is keep quiet even if you know that you are 100% in the right.
