I'm actually kind of bewildered by it. Out of all the controversies, that's the one to explode?
It hits home the most. It makes us all think what other kinds of shit is being covered up by gaming journalists. It makes us wonder how much more corruption is in the industry. We all knew it was bad before, but this gave us all a clear message that it is far worse than we have thought.
That is one side of the dice. As I have said in one of the posts in that thread, the reason it became a clusterfuck was because there were four completely different topics running in parallel at the same time.
-The Zoe Quinn cheating/sleeping around topic, which was actually just a spark that ignited the
real controversy. However since other sites refused to allow discussion, there was a constant influx of newbies who kept bringing it up over and over, which led to:
-The White Knights (as much as I hate to use that term since it is poisoning the well, this time it is pretty apt) jumped on the wagon, arguing that the entire controversy was about Zoe being a woman and that talking about her sex-life is slut shaming
-At the same time there was another topic that was concerning the apparent silencing and corruption of the games press and the apparently misguided attacks on the Wizardchan community flamed by said games press
-Finally the guys who were just appalled over Greg Tito's statements regarding his journalistic integrity
In many ways it was the perfect storm, combining the pent up resentment against the gaming press' declining quality, the whole feminist issue that has been handing in the air and an influx of new users and it was a bomb in the waiting.
