I died 89 times on my first playthrough on Normal. Second playthrough was 47. By the time of my 4th I got down to 4 deaths. On my 6 playthrough, I managed to do a no death run. One of my proudest gaming of my life. Good luck out there man, you can do it.
My first run on Normal was 101 deaths. So far I'm at 20, which I think is about where I was last time. But that was three years ago and I haven't played the game at all in between. The best thing I've done so far was getting past the first demon without dying.

Once you realize how the basic demon works, he's practically easy. The Sword Arm Demon is actually even more predictable when they show up in Stage 2. The Red-Orange Demons with Spikes are the real pain, if you're not careful and rely on duck dodging too much. The 4 armed demons look intimidating, but as long as you don't disarm them of the trident, they have 1-2-3 basic swing patten that is easy to avoid and can be exploited. 4 Arms nearly made me shit myself on my first time fighting it in the electric cage match. I screamed when one random spawned barely in to Stage 5.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 I am stuck on stage 5 right now. The difficulty picks up like crazy. I briefly tested my physical copy of the Castlevania Collection on Switch; works perfectly.
I think I'm on stage 5 also, I should really get around to beating that game.

I am playing Demon's Souls remaster and I am having a blast.

It's such a weird game. So, it's like 12 years old, the original? Pre-Dark Souls, right, so that means jank-ass slow mechanics and slowly walking around guys and bullshit ganks and horrifically annoying quirky traversal areas and dark corners, my god I forgot how much the Souls games rely on dark souls to confuse me both in terms of orientation and to hide enemies.

But it's also polished and looks beautiful because it's a PS5 exclusive remaster. It's like I'm listening to the cleanest newest refurbished Victrola 78 record player.

The last boss I beat is called Armor Spider and it's a.. .well, the name.. so you gotta run through a tunnel dodging its projectiles to be able to whack it while also avoiding its melee attacks. But the hitbox, distance, whatever, to do that, was so confusing, like I didn't know if I was even hitting it or it was hitting me until I was done. I imagine this was 100x worse on PS3. So they remaster does an excellent job of preserving infuriating FromSoftware bullshit, lol.

Keep in mind I had just finished playing the crap out of the buttery smooth, vertical traversing and graphically clear Sekiro that going back to Souls bullshit is annoying but in a fun way. I am giggling a lot, and it's because I had played the Dark Souls.

The level design is pretty cool- I know Dark Souls' big interconnected world is part of its genius but the simple hub-world thing in Demon's is nice, too.
I have no shame in admitting I cheesed that spider with arrows from the fog gate the first couple times I fought it. Although, it certainly was way more satisfying hearing it shriek from melee attacks on the other runs.

I'm all for "Whatever works, works". My preferred method of dealing with the Capra Demon in Dark Souls is get a bunch of firebombs and lob them over the wall to kill him without ever fighting him. Because fuck him and his stupid dogs. Serves him right for not putting a roof over his arena closet

In ER news, Day 2, I'm lost in the woods. I wandered about some, found a dungeon, found the map for the region(or part of it) near the BIG OMINOUS CASTLE GATE and got my *Chuckle* Finger Maiden. So yay! Still getting used to riding my horsey. I keep dismounting when I'm trying to sprint, which led to be killed murdered by a big scary rider Boss(I think?) on a bridge so I need to practice the controls. I ended up going off the map and found another church with a special flask of "Wonderus Physick" which sounds like something out of a D&D manual and a flask upgrade so hooray! I'm trying to find roundtable hold but apparently you need a special invite, you can't just find it on the map, so I guess I need to explore more and get stronger. I'm kinda afraid to go near the castle until I get more levels and get more gear right now, so I admit the whole open world is both great and intimindating. So for now still wandering around like a dork trying to find useful stuff. If you don't hear from me soon, I'm probably still lost refusing to ask for directions.

Also, those big mounted guys are literally fucking Bosses, I guess. At least they don't chase you around the map.

Blazing Chrome - The run n' gun game that is a combination of Contra (specifically Hard Corps & Alien Wars; more so the former) and Metal Slug. A better Contra sequel than Rouge Corps. The game does the Mega Man style stage select, so you can through the stages in any order you wish. I already completed the first stage. When you beat the game, hard mode is unlocked, and two additional characters.

The game is really cool, but its also really short and I didn't find it that hard.

Exactly why I got it for $6.99. This game came out in 2019 at the price of $16.99. It shouldn't even be close that high at this point anymore. I'm already almost done with stage 2. I did the first stage and did the third stage second.

On the recommendation of @Specter Von Baren, I tried the demo for Phoenotopia Awakening on Steam and found it pretty entertaining. Definately Zelda 2 vibes with some other 2d platformers thrown in there. Took me a minute to figure out how to assign items to my quick access ring(one of the characters mentions if haven't used it much and teaches you how) and then forgot about it again for the first boss, who I died too way too many times. I can totally see the metroidvania influences in there since the one temple has rocks I presume need to be blown apart and thus stuff I can't access yet. Basically, It feels like Zelda 2 but with a ton of Quality of Life improvements that make it more fun to play(and an adjustable difficulty setting, because despite the cute graphics it can be difficult).

Honestly, the worst thing about it is that I played the demo just before I started Elden RIng so I won't be getting around to the main game for a while, but thanks for the heads up, Spector. Maybe once I'm done with Elden Ring I'll give the full game a go.

I’m taking advantage of the triple XP/cash bonus in RDO through April 5th for bounty hunters, and am close to completing the prestigious ranks. Every now and then a chance for a player bounty will pop up. Really hoping the latest encounter I had isn’t a streamer or YouTuber because I’d probably be on the receiving end of bad highlight reel. I was chasing him into the hotel in Rhodes and when I busted through the front doors, got my head blown clean off not a second later. Really kinda forgot that cat and mousing often plays a big part of the PvP stuff.

Finished Iconoclasts.

It's a pretty good game, but a lousy Metroidvania. I blame it on the tweak system. It's no fun knowing what's in every chest in the game before you get to it - half the fun of puzzling out hidden treasure is not knowing what you're gonna get. In Iconoclasts I know every chest in the game contains 1 of 4 crafting materials, all of which are abundant, and all of which go to crafting tweaks (gameplay modifiers). Except the mods barely affect gameplay, and there's never a good reason to swap out the stuff that works out for 99% of the game. Also they break. How annoying.

So I was missing a lot of the character growth/progression that I like from Metroidvania, and enjoying the game for the challenge moreso than the rewards. As for the story... I don't think it's particularly good or well written. Most of the characters come across as selfish and rather infantile (everyone gets to shout "Shut up!" on several occasions), and for all its attempts at maturity and dark or shocking twists... your game still looks like Sonic the Hedgehog. And you jump on Goombas. You jump on stuff to pick it up, Mario 2 style. The world is sequenced as grasslands>desert>water world>woods>ice world>etc, like a SNES era videogame. It does all these cartoony things "because it's a game", yet the game is trying to tell this super fucked up tale about an oppressive theocracy where children are executed on a whim and the bad guys all get horribly Cronenberg'd by the end. It's too much whiplash for something that looks so docile.

Mm, I feel like the very last acts of the story end too harshly and weirdly. Royal being left to a fate worse than death on the moon and the secret about the final boss feeling like a joke taken too far after everything else that happened in the game in particular rubbed me the wrong way. I'm far from being a stranger to really fucked up stories but I agree whole heartedly that Iconoclasts needed a second go over by someone to tone down the mood whiplash. You can straddle the line between goofy and grim in a story, I've seen it done before in games like Corpse Party where a brief moment of humor helps reduce the pressure of the horribleness of what's happening, but it requires restraint and good timing to do well and Iconoclasts is too gung-ho about it.

Been playing a bit of Rhythm Heaven Fever again. Every once in a while I get the urge to play it for an hour or so, and SGF recently played Rhythm Heaven Megamix on stream so I had to go back. I really love this game. It's the only game I've ever played an untranslated Japanese version of because the original songs are just so much better.

I love the game but I hate the perfect system. The game will randomly select a song and you get 3 chances to do it perfectly, then you get a little perfect medal. If you do it perfectly any other time, it just doesn't count. I did the little rocket song perfect first time I played it this time, and then like 2 songs later it came up for a 'perfect' attempt and I screwed it up completely. Darn it Rhythm Heaven, I already just did it perfect but you weren't watching, I deserve that medal!!

Yeah, Royal's fate is very weirdly staged. I wouldn't mind him sacrificing himself for Robin. But how it plays out is Robin is the one who sacrifices him by using him essentially as a human car jack, left behind while prying open an escape route. No hesitation and and no reaction from her part, which is unlike everything that's been established about her. It was super inhumane of her to leave the guy for dead, especially after using him to save herself.

I get what Konjak was trying to do with the scene but it comes across as horribly cruel and self-serving. Royal should've opened the door and locked it behind Robin if the point was he was broken beyond repair and ready to embrace the despondency of the situation.

I thought it was weird how the game builds up Chrome and Mother as the ultimate villains but you never fight Chrome after the helicopter chase and he dies in a cutscene while Mother dies in her first scene after much build up. After that a cadre of anime baddies spawns out of nowhere and suddenly they're the big bads. And *then* comes the Starworm. I understand the point of ridiculing the religious beliefs that have been the source of all conflict throughout the story with such a mundane twist, maybe the anticlimax is the point, but you're still left with an anticlimax.

I'm now in full PS5 demo mode going between Demon's Souls remake when I want challenge/frustration and replaying AC: Valhalla when I don't.
Yeah yeah I know we all hate AC 'cause it's bloated and repetitive and only BotW and Elden Ring are good open worlds any more but f*** it, I like my bad-ass chick Viking and easy combat.

My biggest frustration with Demon's Souls, besides camera boss, is darkness. Yesterday I finally defeated the Flamelurker and it's bad enough that fight has bullshit hitboxes, timing and a shit arena, but the runback is the worst in any souls game. If you go left you have to deal with a confusing cave system. If you go right, the "short" way, you have to fall down platforms in the dark... which I can't see! I tried turning up the brightness. I tried mimicking youtube videos exactly. I just could not do it, literally could not see where to drop.
So I invoked the save scumming technique of backing up save file and thus learn that PS5 includes a new "feature" that doesn't let you use USB drive for that! lol you need to pay for PS+. Well I did anyway so I can try their monthly games whenever I get around to that but still, what jerks.

Demon's Souls bosses are interesting- the whole "puzzle boss" thing. I like that the Dragon God requires stealth and ballistas- the idea that this thing is just too powerful to fight fairly. I love that thematically. I just don't like relying on camera boss to help me, damn I can't see shit.

Valhalla's faces look too real? I am on 1080p so I didn't know if I'd see any differences honestly I was just looking forward to faster loading times. But the faces are like crystal clear, line perfect... I dunno how to describe it, it's not uncanny valley 'cause I'm not freaked out, it's just sort of hyper-real or something. Well I finished dicking around in Norway for now.

Not sure how to help with the darkness issue, but there's a sneaky cheese technique on the Demon's Souls remake which doesn't work on any of the other games due to the way saving is handled. I've tested it and it seems to work every time. Will put this sensitive information in highly classified spoiler tags to protect the mainstream public from their own poorly managed inhibitions...

If you exit and close the game ASAP after you die, it should reload to a point just before you died. The other games won't allow this as they save instantly, but Demon's Souls does it slightly different. This is an ancient secret technique passed down for hundred of generations, who selflessly worked hard to keep from falling into dangerous irresponsible hands, so Shhhhhhhhhh...

I am currently playing XCOM 2. I have played over 150 hours of this game, and I have owned it since launch, but I have never actually completed it.

I am determined to change that.

I do love this game. The RNG can be bollocks at times, but I guess that is the nature of the beast. Im playing on Veteran difficulty (Rookie, Veteran, Commander, Legend), which kind of feels a bit too easy at times, but It does alleviate some of the frustrations of the RNG when it doesn't work in your favour, so I guess that is fine.

Im also just discovering the wonders of the Gunslinger sniper class, which is to say that they mainly prioritise pistol-related abilities, like the ability to take a shot at every enemy in view in a single action, or get a free shot every few turns. I always thought that the Sniper route was the way to go, but this seems very effective.

Hopefully I can see this game to the end, and maybe actually end up playing that XCOM Chimera Squad spin-off that I got for my birthday a few years ago.

I am the same. I started replaying it like a month or 2 ago, right now its on the back burner because of Elden Ring. Although I am playing on commander. Did you get the chosen dlc?

IIRC the original DeS didn’t allow USB saves either. I think it’s publisher/game-specific. Killzone 2 was another. Almost all my other games allow USB backup though.

*edit* apparently PSN cloud is required for all PS5 exclusives to backup saves. Ridiculous.
