I find classical music to be empty and meaningless compared to music with lyrics. It removes an entire layer of the music and conveys less meaning, imo.
Opera isn't just a browser, you know.

The "classical vocal" list in the image behind the spoiler above is far from all being classical but there is "old stuff" in there.

(Yes, that's from the same opera as this maybe more familiar piece!)

(Pretty pictures, rather than dancers, but who's complaining? Here's the version with voices too.)

(You might recognise the tune as also being used for this.)

Hey, is it just me that caught a hint of the HALO:CE theme in the OP? I know it was at least partly Brahms Cello Sonata No 2.

You do know that in terms of technicality and virtuoisity many classical composers would most likely have played in metal bands had they been born in this day and age.
No.

In terms of technicality and virtuosity many classical composer would most likely be making contemporary classical music had they been born in this day and age.
*Disagrees* Beethoven laid as much ground work for modern metal as black sabbath did. Some of the most exciting, techinical and challenging music being created these days is by metal bands, who is to say many classical composers wouldn't. Maybe not in an aesthetic way but in a composition way they would. At least in my mind. Anyone who looks at modern classical music and doesn't look towards metal is not getting the full picture in my mind.

Edit*

Can you really discredit this as having no classical artistic merit? No, it is almost a perfect fusion of metal and classical music, each playing off each other.

I also enjoy classical music. And in the face of all the Renaissance-era greats (look them up yourself), I'm going to toss in two composers that may very well blow the minds of some of the ignorant haters.

Namely: John Williams and Nobuo Uematsu. If you don't know who they are, well... where the hell have you been in the last 30 years or so?

I find the song to be a bad example of a fusion of metal and classical. Sure the one guitar player can do a few progressions ripped from some classical parts, but the rest of the band is bland and repetitive. Maybe if they had a bit more variety in tempo I would like it better, but it sounds like they start to cover a classical piece then kinda gave up.

Sure the solo sounds classical, but the song as a piece of music is a piece of crap.

It's good that people are trying tho. I would say something from Cynic off of Focus might be a better example of this fusion.

I love this kind of music. Though I have to ask: What makes music "Classical music"? I always thought it was if they were popular and lived long ago, like Bach and the others. But this guy is apparently also making classical music, and this is fairly modern peices of music.

I never liked rock or metal like most teenage guys. Sure, I listened to it, but I never really loved it. Then I found classical music. My god, it filled me with wonder as to how I survived without it. That music is true genius, and no talentless ****** like Bieber can even begin to be on the same reality plane to compare to it.

Now, a lot of people are snooty about classical music. "If it's classical it's bound to be good. Now I'm going to go to the golf club and have a glass of port." Wrong. There's terrible classical music too. I dislike the cheery stuff, it feels empty and shallow. I prefer quietly sad and beautiful music, such as the compositions of Ludovico Einaudi.

That's Ludovico Einaudi.

He.
Is.
Incredible.

<youtube=tAI2doCUbNc>

Now, what's your opinion on classical music? Do you like it? Despise it? Think it's boring, and prefer your rockin' metal?

If you do like it, who's your favourite composer?
Quote, until now I had a passing interest in classical music. I listen to purely orchestral music if I'm in a bad mood but only on this radio station I've never been "Into it".

Until now. I clicked onto the second page while the youtube link in the OP was playing and almost screamed out "NO!" when the music stopped. I didn't because I remembered that my girlfriend is asleep but I was really, really enjoing myself.

Any chance you could edit a list of Similar musicians/composers into the OP so I can look them up too? Thanks mate.

Well done, good topic.

Yeah I will give you that, its just a very obvious example. Obvious but cheap :p I would recommend some Cynic alright, or a good bit of Death, voice of the soul would be perfect now that I think about it. They are more their own band, whereas warmen are specifially trying to be classic. Obviously being your own band is better. But for the sake of trying for some cheap recognition warmen got used!

Thank you. So much.

You opened up a whole new dimension in composers for me. Just with this one man. The one piece by him, Primavera is absolutely gorgeous. I showed my bestfriend and she said right away it was going on her iPod.

Thank you once again. You have outstanding taste in music.
Thankyou, glad I could better someone's life in some small way! :)

Have a listen to the song in the OP, it's amazing! All of his songs are though...
I will tomorrow, my mother wants me to go to bed. -_-

Thanks again!
I listened to the song, that was freaking intense. Thanks for the third time. :D

I love it, especially after playing in a classical orchestra. Dvorak's 9th and Rachmoninoff's 2nd are my particular favorites.

*waves* fellow Yoko Kanno fan here :)

OT: classical goes well with metal, that's how I like it. Like most other styles it has its goods and bads, and its timeless evergreen tracks.

I love classical and classical-style music, even if I like some things more. A good orchestra can sound better than any rock band.

My favourite classical music is Dvorjak's From the New World.
I was trying to remember his name, cheers :D.

Now if only I could remember the symphony I'm thinking of. Written about the death of his daughter, I believe. I got quite caught up in it actually, but not in the same way that a good guitar riff will grab me and keep me listening.

If I may have the pleasure to answer you...

First of all, very good question! The term "Classical" is just there to distinguish that kind of music from other genres nothing more. The irony is in this: when they lived (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven) they weren't popular. They weren't even performed very much (except by themselves). Every piece they made was a revolution back then and considered contemporary. People didn't approved of Beethovens music for instance, since they were still getting used to the previous era, and there he was revolutionizing things. My point: they were all contemporary and modern and had nothing to do with classical, cause in those times there isn't any other music besides that one and the folklore. So that term is used just out of labeling reasons, it doesn't bring any explanation whatsoever about the genre.

"Classical" started out as the period after Baroque and before Romantic, but has changed in use to include Baroque and Romantic and other things in the same sort of style since then. If you say a band with white leathers, synths and big hair blasting out rock ballads with catchy choruses, they'd be an 80s band even if they only formed this week, right? I think Classical these days means stuff from before we started labelling everything by decade. If you check out my huge playlist up there, you'll see a few things in it that don't even predate ABBA but are in a style that predates the Beatles and Elvis.

Googling "If you like Einaudi you'll like" brought up this result:
If you like Einaudi, you'll like this guy... [http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/1217294/If%20you%20like%20Einaudi,%20you%27ll%20li.html]

...Elijah Bossenbroek.

He started a thread yesterday on the pianist corner urging people to go to his website and offering free sheet music for one of his pieces, "A Song of Simplicity."

The thread didn't last long (others thought it was too much self-promotion), but I fortunately saw it before it got vaporized, and as I am sucker for sheet music--especially free sheet music--I checked it out. His music is very beautiful and reminds me a lot of Einaudi, and even more of Josh Winiberg. (Those of you who frequent the Einaudi forum will be familiar with Josh.)
I don't see an actual Einaudi forum but there are a few Einaudi threads.

However, I did find this:
